Brady SafeKey Aluminum Lockout Padlock ALU-PRP-38ST-KD — Purple, Keyed Different Overview

The Brady SafeKey ALU-PRP-38ST-KD is a purple aluminum-body lockout padlock built for personal energy control under OSHA 29 CFR 1910.147. Its job in a lockout/tagout program is simple and non-negotiable: hold an isolation point — a breaker, valve, or disconnect — in the safe position so the equipment cannot be re-energized while a worker is exposed to the hazard.

This unit ships keyed different (KD), meaning its key opens this lock and no other. That is the correct choice when every authorized employee must control the only key to their own padlock, which is the foundation of the one-worker-one-lock-one-key rule. The reinforced SafeKey locking mechanism resists shimming and prying, and the lightweight aluminum body keeps the lock comfortable on a belt or lockout pouch across a shift.

The purple body is a color-coding tool. Many facilities assign lock colors by department, trade, or shift so a supervisor can see at a glance who owns each lock on a group lockout hasp. Pair this padlock with hasps for multi-worker isolation, with cable lockouts for awkward or multi-point disconnects, and with lockout tags so the lock carries the name and contact of the worker who applied it. Stock spare locks and tags at a wall-mounted lockout station near the work area.

Every worker exposed to the hazardous energy must apply their own lock and tag — this padlock is one person's device, not a shared facility lock. For energy isolation points that use electrical plugs, combine your padlocks with dedicated plug lockouts. Browse the full lockout padlock range to match colors and keying across your crew.

What It Is Built For

Use case Fit Buyer guidance
Single worker locking out one isolation point Excellent Apply this keyed-different padlock and your own tag directly to a breaker, valve, or disconnect under OSHA 1910.147.
Color-coding by department, trade, or shift Excellent Use the purple body to assign locks visually; buy matching colors across the crew from the lockout padlocks collection.
Group lockout on a shared hasp Good Each worker adds their own padlock to a lockout hasp; this lock is one person's device on the hasp.
Worker who must hold the only key to their lock Excellent Keyed-different (KD) means this key fits only this lock — supports one-worker-one-lock-one-key discipline.
Keyed-alike sets where one key opens many locks Not suitable This is keyed different; choose a keyed-alike padlock instead if a supervisor needs one key for a lock set.
Restocking a lockout station Good Add spare locks and tags to a lockout station so devices stay near the point of use.

Lockout/tagout devices are part of an OSHA 29 CFR 1910.147 energy-control program. A lock isolates hazardous energy (electrical, hydraulic, pneumatic, mechanical) so equipment cannot be re-energized during service. Each authorized worker applies their own keyed-different lock and a tag; never share or remove another worker's lock. The hardware is only as good as the written procedure, training, and verification of zero energy behind it. Browse lockout/tagout devices.

Pros & Cons

Pros
  • Keyed different (KD) — each key opens only its own lock, supporting one-worker-one-lock-one-key control
  • Lightweight aluminum body is comfortable to carry on a belt or pouch all shift
  • Purple body enables department, trade, or shift color-coding across a crew
  • Reinforced SafeKey mechanism resists shimming and prying
  • 1-1/2" shackle clearance fits common breakers, hasps, and disconnects
  • Works with hasps, cable lockouts, tags, and stations as a complete LOTO kit
Cons
  • Keyed different means a supervisor cannot open multiple locks with one key
  • Single lock — multi-worker isolation needs a separate hasp plus one lock per worker
  • Tag must be purchased separately to identify the worker who applied the lock
  • Color choice is fixed to purple; matching a different scheme needs a different color SKU

How It Compares

All three are Brady SafeKey aluminum padlocks supplied keyed different (KD); the practical difference is body color, which drives your color-coding scheme. Match colors to departments or shifts across the crew from the lockout padlocks collection.

Model Color Body Keying
ALU-PRP-38ST-KD (this lock) Purple Aluminum Keyed Different
ALU-BLU-38ST-KD Blue Aluminum Keyed Different
SafeKey B07RM5LJHD Aluminum (standard) Aluminum Keyed Different

Choose purple here for a department or shift that uses purple; otherwise pick the blue or standard aluminum sibling. For a complete program, add a hasp for group lockout and tags to identify each worker.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Brady SafeKey ALU-PRP-38ST-KD keyed alike or keyed different?

It is keyed different (KD). The key supplied with this padlock opens only this lock and no other, which supports the one-worker-one-lock-one-key rule where each employee controls the only key to their own device. If you need one key to open several locks, choose a keyed-alike padlock from the lockout padlocks collection instead.

What does the purple color mean on this lockout padlock?

Color is a coding tool, not a safety rating. Many facilities assign padlock colors by department, trade, or shift so supervisors can see who owns each lock on a shared hasp. Use purple for the group you assign it to and buy matching colors for the rest of the crew from the lockout padlocks range.

What is the shackle size of the ALU-PRP-38ST-KD?

The 38ST designation indicates a 1-1/2" (38 mm) shackle clearance, which fits common breaker lockouts, disconnects, and the holes on most lockout hasps. Confirm the shackle clears your specific isolation point before standardizing across the site.

Does this padlock meet OSHA lockout/tagout requirements?

It is designed as a personal energy-isolation device for use within an OSHA 29 CFR 1910.147 program. The padlock itself is one part of compliance — your written energy-control procedure, worker training, and a tag identifying who applied the lock complete the requirement. Add lockout tags to pair with each lock.

Can several workers use this single lock to lock out one machine?

No. Under 1910.147 each authorized worker exposed to the hazard must apply their own lock and tag. For multi-worker isolation, fit a lockout hasp at the isolation point and have every worker add one of their own padlocks to the hasp.

Is this padlock non-conductive or rated for electrical work?

The title does not state a non-conductive or dielectric rating, so we do not claim one. It has an aluminum body. If you require a verified non-conductive lock for energized-adjacent work, confirm the specification on a lock that is explicitly rated for it rather than relying on this listing.

How many keys come with the lock?

Keying and key count are set by Brady for the ALU-PRP-38ST-KD configuration; confirm the exact key count on the current Amazon listing before you order. Because it is keyed different, the worker who is issued the lock should hold the key for it under your key-control policy.

What should I buy alongside this padlock for a complete LOTO setup?

Pair it with lockout hasps for group lockout, cable lockouts for multi-point or awkward disconnects, lockout tags to identify the worker, and plug lockouts for cord-and-plug equipment. Stock spares at a lockout station near the work area.

How is this different from the blue SafeKey ALU-BLU-38ST-KD?

They are the same aluminum SafeKey padlock, keyed different, with the same 1-1/2" shackle — only the body color differs (purple versus blue). Pick the color that matches the department or shift you are assigning, and source both from the lockout padlocks collection to keep keying consistent.

Can I get more of these keyed the same as each other?

This SKU is keyed different, so each lock you buy has its own unique key. If your program needs multiple locks that open with one common key, that is a keyed-alike order — select a keyed-alike option instead. Browse the lockout padlocks range to compare keying choices.

Is the aluminum body durable enough for daily industrial use?

Aluminum keeps the lock light for all-day carry while the reinforced SafeKey mechanism resists shimming and prying. For the toughest abrasion or weather exposure, verify the body and shackle materials suit your environment; pair with appropriate cable lockouts where the isolation point is hard to reach.

Where do I store spare locks and tags so workers can find them?

Mount a lockout station near the equipment so authorized workers grab a lock and tag at the point of use. Keep this padlock with its tag, and restock the station regularly. Browse lockout stations and lockout tagout tags to build out the storage point.

I never write reviews however I feel like I should on this lock since there are not many posted. Right off the bat, I love this lock. However, I almost returned it right when I opened the box. The reason was that the key was so difficult to put into the lock I had to force the key in by pressing the key on my desk and pushing as hard as possible into the lock. I decided to put one tiny drop of 3-in-1 oil into the keyhole and the lock instantly freed up and works amazingly. Hopefully, my lock was just a factory defect that they didn't put any assembly lube in. The only downside to the oil I used is I had to wipe the key off each time I used it for the first 15 times because otherwise, the key would leave greasy marks on stuff. Final criticism and this will probably be the most important fact for most buyers. This lock comes with only one key, I am unaware of any locksmith that carries the blanks for this key to make you a second one. I really wish that would sell a model of this same lock with 2 or 3 keys, even if it's $10 more expensive I would pay it.

Nice solid aluminum body with an unusual key. The key can only go in one way and I always seem to try the wrong way the first time. As a lockout lock I actually like having to try a second time giving me another chance to confirm I’m ready to remove this lock.

I work in manufacturing and L.O.T.O. is a must! +the locking mechanism is smooth as butter. +the new key design is amazing. I no longer have to jiggle and wiggle to try to get the key in the lock. +the color looks awesome! [Purple] - unfortunately the paint is not very tough. So after just a couple of weeks the paint is already chipping away with normal use. I have only had this a couple of weeks and don't expect any issue with durability. On the strength I really can't say anything because I neither need it for anything strenuous nor will I test it for that. I will be buying a blue one soon! This is a definite BUY!!!

Warning ! Only one key provided
The lock looks and feels sturdy and well made, however only one key was provided, so should it get lost or broken with the lock engaged you will need a hacksaw.

Only one key so beware and key color doesn't match the lock pad color. I use it for my gym locker so it does what it's supposed to.
