EDITORIAL REVIEW β€” Westinghouse 12000 Peak Watt Dual Fuel Portable Inverter Generator, Remote Electric

Assessed on the manufacturer's published specification and on how the format fits a working shift, by Steven Eaton, WC Safety editor.

Amazon customer rating: 4.6 / 5 - WC Safety review of the Westinghouse 12000 Peak Watt Dual Fuel Portable Inverter Generator, Remote Electric.
Written by Steven Eaton, WC Safety Editorial, from the published Westinghouse listing. The score above is the live Amazon customer rating captured at review time - not a WC Safety test result. We did not laboratory-test this product.

The Westinghouse 12000 Peak Watt Dual Fuel Portable Inverter Generator, Remote Electric is one of our picks for the CO-shutoff generator lineup. Everything below comes straight from the manufacturer's published listing - specs, capacities, and dimensions are theirs, not ours.

Most generators in this collection carry a built-in carbon monoxide sensor that shuts the engine down when CO accumulates (check each unit β€” a few carry a CO alert only, which warns but does not stop the engine) - the technology (CO Sensor, CO Shield, CO Watchdog and similar, named per listing) that the CPSC credits with preventing generator CO deaths. It does not make indoor use safe: generators run outdoors, 20+ feet from openings, exhaust pointed away, with working CO alarms in the building. See how to run a generator safely.

Key details, quoted from the manufacturer's published listing:

  • HOME BACKUP POWER, ≀3% THD: The Westinghouse iGen12000DFc dual fuel inverter generator provides whole home backup power that's safe for sensitive electronics; It also has a 50A outlet; Gasoline: 12,000W peak and 9,000W running; Propane: 11,000W peak and 8,100W running
  • POWERFUL ENGINE, VERY QUIET OPERATION: Eco Mode, insulation and mufflers keep this generator neighborhood friendly with as low as 64 dBA; A heavy duty 457cc Westinghouse 4-Stroke OHV engine runs up to 19 hours at 25% load on a 7.9 gallon fuel tank; Low oil shutdown and CO sensor included
  • SAVE UP TO 50% IN FUEL COSTS: Inverter technology matches engine speed to power demand to cut fuel consumption in half versus traditional generatorsβ€”that's less fuel and fewer refills, especially with the large 7.9 gallon gas tank. And inverters need less maintenance, saving time, hassle and money
  • TRANSFER SWITCH OR INTERLOCK KIT READY: Features one 120/240V 14–50R 50A outlet for home or RV and one 120V/240V L14-30R 30A twist lock, both outlets are transfer switch or interlock kit ready for home backup; Includes one GFCI 120V 5–20R 20A duplex household outlet; Parallel ready to double output
  • LED DATA CENTER: Digital display shows fuel level, power output, remaining run time, voltage output and lifetime hours so you stay updated in real time; Includes a remote start key fob, battery, 12V battery charger, propane regulator kit, oil, funnel and tool kit to get you going out of the box

What to check before you buy

Buy to the published rating, not the headline. Check the manufacturer's stated capacity, dimensions and materials against the job you actually do, and treat any listing that will not publish its numbers as a reason to keep looking.

Carbon monoxide is the headline hazard
A portable generator produces CO in quantities that can be fatal indoors within minutes. It runs outdoors only, well away from doors, windows and vents - never in a garage, basement or crawlspace, even with the door open.
Running versus starting watts
Starting (surge) watts cover the momentary draw of motors; running watts cover continuous load. Sizing to the running figure alone leaves you short the moment a compressor or pump kicks in.
Transfer switch for any building connection
Connecting a generator to building wiring without a properly installed transfer switch can backfeed the utility line and endanger line workers. That connection is electrician territory.
GFCI and cord condition
Wet or outdoor use needs GFCI protection and outdoor-rated cords sized for the load and the run length.
