What to check before you buy

Selection starts with the published rating, not the marketing headline. Under OSHA 29 CFR 1910.176, materials handling comes down to secure storage, clear aisles, and equipment used within its rated capacity — match the working load to the manufacturer's number, check the floor and route the wheels will actually roll on, and treat any listing that hides its rating as a reason to keep shopping.

A cargo net is retention, not securement

An elastic net holds light items in place and stops them blowing out; it carries no working load limit and cannot be counted toward cargo-securement math. Federal aggregate-WLL rules (49 CFR 393.106) apply to rated tie-downs — straps, chain and webbing — never to nets.

Hooks and anchor points fail first

The mesh rarely gives way — the hook opens or the anchor pulls, and the stored elastic energy releases along the net. Check hook throats for spread and anchor to real structural points, not trim clips.

Cord and mesh condition

There is no load-rated webbing on a net. What ages is the elastic cord and the mesh: look for chalking, cracking, stiffness, cut strands and UV fade. Sun and ozone finish elastic long before it looks worn.

Eye protection and release path

A released net snaps back toward the face. Keep out of the recoil path, keep hooks under control through the whole stretch, and wear safety glasses when tensioning at eye height.
