The FORTEM Ratchet Straps, Tie Down Strap Set, 1650lb Break Strength, 4 Pack 15ft x 1in, 4 is one of our picks for the tie-down lineup. Everything below comes straight from the manufacturer's published listing - specs, capacities, and dimensions are theirs, not ours.
Working load limit - not break strength - is the number that matters when securing cargo: WLL is conventionally about one-third of the rated break strength β an industry convention rather than a ratio set in the regulation β and under 49 CFR 393.106 the aggregate working load limit of the tie-downs must be at least half the weight of the article being secured. Inspect webbing for cuts and UV fray before every use.
Key details, quoted from the manufacturer's published listing:
- Ratchet Strap Kit β This Set of ratchet tie down straps includes 4 metal ratchet buckles with rubber grips, 4 soft loops straps, 4 heavy-duty S-Hook Straps. The straps are 1 inch wide and 15 feet long. Everything fits inside a carrying pouch.
- Safe & Secure β Ratchet straps heavy duty S hooks and soft loops straps help create tie down anchor points to strap items to cars, SUVs and trucks. Ergonomic rubber grip handles make it easier to hold while ratcheting to secure your loads safely during transport.
- Durability β Rubber coated stainless steel handles with a smooth, simple release latch. The S hooks are coated for added weather resistance. Altogether along with high quality black polyester net webbing, straps have a working load capacity of 550lb and 1650lb break strength.
- Multifunctional β Tie down straps ratchet mechanism offers durability and security to transport a variety of objects. Securely tie down your motorcycle, bike, kayak, UTV, boat, ATV, boxes, boat, cooler, & other cargo via trailers, or car roof rack.

What to check before you buy
Buy to the published rating, not the headline. Check the manufacturer's stated capacity, dimensions and materials against the job you actually do, and treat any listing that will not publish its numbers as a reason to keep looking.
- Working load limit, not break strength
- The WLL is the number that matters. Break strength is the point of failure in a lab; the WLL is what the assembly is rated to hold in service, typically a third of break strength.
- Assembly rating is the weakest part
- A strap is only rated as high as its lowest-rated component - webbing, ratchet or end fitting. Replacing a hook with a stronger one does not raise the assembly rating.
- Webbing condition
- Cuts, abrasion, chemical damage and UV degradation all remove capacity that is not visible as a number. Damaged webbing is removed from service, not derated.
- Number of tie-downs
- Cargo securement rules are based on aggregate working load limit relative to cargo weight, plus minimum counts by cargo length - not on what looks tight enough.
