What to check before you buy
- Performance class
- ANSI/ISEA 107 defines Class 1, 2 and 3 by the amount of background and retroreflective material. Higher traffic speeds and lower light call for higher class.
- Type R, O or P
- Type R is roadway, Type O off-road, Type P public safety. The type determines which classes are permitted for the setting.
- Federal highway requirement
- Workers exposed to traffic on federal-aid highway rights-of-way are required to wear high-visibility apparel meeting ANSI/ISEA 107.
- Retroreflectivity degrades
- Washing, abrasion and soiling all reduce reflective performance. A faded, stained garment no longer performs to its class.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between Class 2 and Class 3?
Class 3 requires more background and retroreflective material and must have sleeves, giving greater visibility and better definition of the human form. It is specified for higher speeds and poorer conditions.
What do Type R, O and P mean?
Type R is for roadway and temporary traffic control, Type O for off-road settings without traffic exposure, Type P for public safety personnel such as fire and police.
Is hi-vis legally required?
Workers exposed to traffic on federal-aid highway rights-of-way must wear apparel meeting ANSI/ISEA 107. Other settings depend on the employer hazard assessment.
How many washes does hi-vis last?
Garments carry a maximum wash cycle marking. Beyond it, the fluorescent background and retroreflective tape may no longer meet the class.
Does a faded vest still count?
No. Fluorescent fabric fades and reflective tape degrades. A garment that no longer meets its class provides less protection than the label implies.
Where do the specifications on this page come from?
They are taken from the manufacturer's published listing. WC Safety does not laboratory-test products, and nothing is claimed here that the manufacturer does not state.
Does WC Safety sell this product?
No. WC Safety is an independent review site and an Amazon Associate. Purchases happen on Amazon, and we earn a commission on qualifying purchases at no extra cost to you.
