8950 baseball cap bump cap Ergodyne food processing long brim maintenance micro brim

The Ergodyne Skullerz 8950 is a baseball-style bump cap from Ergodyne's Skullerz head protection line — a hard plastic insert housed inside a fabric baseball cap shell, available in three brim configurations (micro, short, and long) and four colors (Navy, Black, Lime, and Factory). The brim style selection distinguishes the 8950 from single-brim bump cap platforms: micro brim for extreme low-clearance environments, short brim as the standard coverage profile, and long brim for additional sun and weather deflection. At $24–$30 depending on configuration, the 8950 is priced as a mid-tier consumable bump cap for programs that need brim flexibility alongside consistent branding across a crew. For the complete bump cap selection, see the bump caps collection.

Construction and Design

The Skullerz 8950 shell is a structured baseball cap with a hard ABS plastic insert that sits inside the crown, protecting the head from incidental contact with fixed overhead structures during normal work movement. Three brim profiles are available from the same parent model family: micro brim (minimal front extension, suited for the tightest overhead clearance environments), short brim (standard baseball cap brim, general-purpose coverage), and long brim (extended front brim for additional deflection of sun, rain, and debris). The fabric outer cap maintains a standard, non-industrial appearance appropriate for food processing, distribution, and public-facing work environments. Four colors are available — Navy, Black, Lime (high-visibility), and Factory (a tan/khaki industrial tone) — across the brim style range, though not every color is available in every brim configuration. The 8950 does not include an adjustable strap; fit is one-size-fits-most via the cap band. The Lime color meets high-visibility appearance requirements for programs that need crew identification at distance without a full high-vis vest.

Compliance and Ratings

The Ergodyne Skullerz 8950, like all bump caps, is not rated under ANSI/ISEA Z89.1. Bump caps provide minor bump and laceration protection from incidental contact with fixed, stationary structures — they do not meet the impact, penetration, or electrical protection thresholds required for falling-object or electrical hazard environments. OSHA 29 CFR 1910.135 and 1926.100 mandate ANSI Z89.1-compliant hard hats wherever falling objects or overhead electrical exposure exist. Safety managers must conduct a documented hazard assessment confirming the absence of these hazards before substituting bump caps. For ANSI Z89.1-compliant hard hats and safety helmets, see the hard hats collection and safety helmets collection. The Skullerz 8950 is appropriate for food and beverage processing lines, light assembly, warehousing and distribution racking environments, and maintenance access in confined spaces where the confirmed hazard is incidental contact with fixed overhead structure.

Performance Assessment

The primary differentiation of the Skullerz 8950 versus single-brim bump caps is the brim configuration selection. Workers in confined maintenance crawlways and under-machinery access points benefit from the micro brim, which minimizes the brim footprint that can catch on low-clearance structure during entry and exit. Workers in outdoor or semi-outdoor environments benefit from the long brim's additional weather and sun deflection. The short brim addresses the majority of indoor industrial environments without the profile or material of the long brim. The Lime color variant provides a high-visibility appearance that can serve crew identification programs without adding a separate high-vis accessory. At $24–$30 per unit, the 8950 is priced above entry-level bump caps — the per-unit premium reflects the Ergodyne brand and the brim selection, not a meaningfully different insert construction. Programs for which exact brim profile matters (crawlspace maintenance, outdoor utility maintenance, food service with appearance standards) will find the 8950's brim range useful; programs that need only basic bump protection at minimum cost should evaluate lower-cost alternatives from the bump caps collection.

Strengths

  • Three brim configurations — micro, short, and long brim from one model family for environment-matched coverage
  • Four color options — Navy, Black, Lime (hi-vis), Factory (tan) for crew identification and appearance programs
  • Ergodyne Skullerz brand consistency — matches other Skullerz head protection for unified crew equipment programs
  • Non-industrial appearance — suitable for food processing, distribution, and public-facing environments
  • Lime color available for high-visibility identification without a separate accessory

Limitations

  • Not ANSI Z89.1 rated — no protection against falling objects, penetration, or electrical hazards; confirm hazard type before specifying
  • Non-rectangular color/brim grid — not every color is available in every brim style; verify specific combination availability before bulk ordering
  • One-size-fits-most — no adjustment mechanism; Lime Long Brim and Black Factory Micro Brim are currently out of stock
  • Price premium over entry-level bump caps — at $24–$30, the 8950 is 40–90% more expensive than basic bump cap alternatives

Recommended Use Cases

The Ergodyne Skullerz 8950 is appropriate for food and beverage processing workers on low-clearance production lines, maintenance technicians in confined access environments who benefit from brim configuration selection, warehousing and distribution workers in racking environments, and crew programs that want brand-consistent bump caps alongside other Skullerz PPE. The long brim variant is suited for semi-outdoor environments where weather deflection is a secondary benefit. The micro brim is the correct specification for the most constrained overhead clearance environments. Workers in any environment with a falling object or overhead electrical hazard require an ANSI Z89.1-compliant hard hat from the hard hats collection — the 8950 is not appropriate for those applications.

Verdict

The Ergodyne Skullerz 8950 delivers the broadest brim configuration selection in the baseball bump cap category — micro, short, and long — across four colors at a $24–$30 price point. The brim flexibility is its genuine differentiator over single-brim bump cap platforms. Buyers who need only basic bump protection and for whom brim style is not a specification requirement will find lower-cost alternatives in the bump caps collection. For Skullerz brand-consistency programs or environments where brim profile selection is operationally relevant, the 8950 is the correct specification.

Oh, my poor head!
Perfect for my bald head. It fits comfortably and securely. People with hair don't realize how much it protects the scalp. My poor head will never win a beauty contest because I skin it more than a five-year-old skins his knees. This bump cap is perfect for when I work on my cars and need to get inside a wheel well or under the car to make repairs. The short 1" brim is perfect for such close in work. This is absolutely a great value and the money I save on bandages make it ever more affordable.

Does what it is supposed to do - protect your head
I bought this cap to keep me from whacking my head in the confined engine room of my boat and within a few minutes of putting it on, I had saved myself from two bumps that in the past might have drawn blood. Every time I wear this hat in a confined space, I find there are one or two times it bumps up against something and I say to myself that it has paid for itself yet again. I have recommended them to my friends and know a few have bought them too. While it is not as light or comfortable as a regular baseball cap, it is far better than a hard hat or helmet. I have gone out and about several times while wearing the hat and have not realized I still had it on instead of a regular ball cap. That said, it does not offer the same level of ventilation. If my head is getting warm and a bit sweaty while wearing it in our Houston winter, I can imagine it will be unpleasant in the summer heat. That said, having to deal with blood running down your forehead is worse than having to deal with a bit of sweat, so I will gladly endure the lack of ventilation to get the protection. You can tell there is something different about the hat if you look at it closely, but I think it looks fine. It appears to be well constructed with quality materials.

Great, but the back strap could be better.
No, it doesn’t comply to anything that I’m aware of, however, I will tell you, that it’s great for general protection when you don’t need a hard hat. When I’m on the job site, I don’t often need a hard hat as it’s rare for someone to be working over head. I haven’t used it yet, but I am always wearing a ball cap, so if I feel like my head is gonna hit something that I’m crouching or crawling near this is great. I’ve also dropped my own hammer on my head a few times. Today I actually was wearing it around for house work and my metal tool box lid fell while I was putting some tools away, didn’t feel a thing.Long story short, if you are required to wear a hard hat, but still feel like you should protect your head with good ventilation, this hat is great, and comfy.Cons: it’s shape is a little off, but I suppose that the gap between my head and the top helps protect from shock. The back Velcro strap is pretty lame. I wish it was a clip so that I could make is tight and more solid. Again, I’ve used this to my advantage by putting my ponytail through it which helps hold it down. With a better back strap, it’ll likely not fall off.

It’s PERFECT!
My poor father is notorious for hitting his head. It turned into a family joke at some point! I even bought him his own hardhat for Christmas one year! Lol!Now that he is older, nothing has changed! He and my mom just moved into their new house. He was so proud of himself one day because he indeed hit his head on something in the garage and came in the house just to brag that he hit his head but he was wearing his hardhat! Lol!Then he said he became too hot wearing it so he took it off for a little while and, unfortunately, while it was off he hit his head again on the corner of the garage door rails which are very sharp metal.God love him, he walked into the house and my mom and I were working on other things and he yelled out that he hit his head again! We shook our heads and smiled at each other. Then we heard him say, “ I think it’s serious this time”. When we walked over to see him we were shocked at the amount of blood that was coming down his head.We rushed him to the emergency room and he did in fact have to have staples. My poor daddy! He’s in his 70s. when I heard that he took off the hardhat because it was getting too hot for him I am mediately tried to find a replacement solution. That is when I found this hat! He loves it! He wears it every day all the time because it’s that comfortable! I wasn’t even aware that they made something like this. It is a blessing! My poor father now has a permanent not on the top of his head where he hit the rail of the garage door. But never again will I have to worry about him having to get stitches because he hits it so hard. I can not thank the person who came up with this brilliant idea enough!!

A great comfortable head saver.
This hat is strong, lightweight and comfortable. And fits well. I have to be careful of falls and head bumps. I’ve recommended this hat to many people. Even my doctor has recommended it to patients after seeing it first hand. Well worth the inexpensive cost.

Flawed design - loose and shallow, falls off
Qualifier, I’ve only worn this with a light duty headlamp. So the falling off is partially due to that. 70% the shallow hat, 30% the headlamp. The hat is shallow. I have a normal sized head. If anything, some caps sit too low on my head. This is the first time I’ve experienced the opposite. It reminds me of a yarmulke. The adjustable band is elastic and Velcro with no cinch. So you can only get it so tight, and even then, it flexes. A non flexible band would likey solve this problem. When I wear this hat as tight as comfortably possible, it will often slip right off my head if I lean over too much or for too long.Yes, I have a light headlamp on. But I didn’t have issues with a ball cap. I bought this because to prevent forehead pressure from the headlamp as well as protect my head while working on my car. It’s fine if you’re mostly upright, but if you lean over to look under something, expect it to slide right off your head.

Great protection for those concerned about falling
This "cap" saved my husband from serious injury. My husband has Parkinson's disease and had DBS surgery six years ago. His walker caught on a threshold in our home and he fell. Although he broke his nose in two places and had several facial lacerations, the CT scan showed no further damage even though his head had hit the ceramic floor and the door jamb. I had just placed his helmet on him shortly before his fall. I highly recommend this protective cap for anyone who is concerned about falling. Besides, this cap looks really good on him! No one knows it's a helmet.
