ANSI Z89.1 Cap Style Class C Hard Hat Ratchet Suspension Skullerz Type I Vented
Editor's take:

The Ergodyne Skullerz 8972 Vented Cap-Style Hard Hat pairs a 4-point ratcheting suspension with adjustable venting for hot-weather comfort — a solid general-purpose Type 1 hat. One thing to be clear on: it's Class C, so it carries zero electrical protection. For electrical work, see the best hard hat for electrical work guide instead. Compare the non-vented Skullerz 8970.

Ergodyne Skullerz 8972 Vented Cap-Style Hard Hat overview

The Ergodyne Skullerz 8972 Vented Cap-Style Hard Hat is certified ANSI/ISEA Z89.1-2014 Type 1, Class C (and CSA Z94.1-15), built around a 4-point premium ratcheting suspension with a one-handed adjustment knob. An open-frame design with adjustable venting lets you open the vents for airflow in the heat or close them to help keep rain out, and the reversible brim switches between upward visibility and sun/rain coverage. The padded, moisture-wicking sweatband and top pad are removable for easy replacement. See our best cap-style hard hat guide and the hard hat selection guide for the full lineup.

Be clear on what Class C means before you buy: it provides no electrical protection at all — zero dielectric rating, not tested against any voltage. That's different from Class E (tested to 20,000V) or Class G (tested to 2,200V); see our hard hat classes explained guide and Class E vs Class G comparison if electrical hazards are part of your job. It's also Type 1, meaning it's tested for top/vertical impact only, not lateral impact — see Type 1 vs Type 2 for that distinction. This standard version does not include an integrated LED light — it has headlamp accessory slots for the separately sold Skullerz LED light; the non-vented Skullerz 8970 is a close sibling if you don't need adjustable venting.

Safety note — Class C means no electrical protection, full stop.

This hard hat has zero electrical insulation rating and should never be relied on around energized equipment, overhead power lines, or any electrical hazard — that requires a Class E or Class G hard hat instead. It's also Type 1, rated for top-impact only, not lateral impact. If the job also involves working at height, this hard hat is head protection only — it is not a personal fall arrest system and does nothing to prevent or arrest a fall. Inspect the shell and suspension regularly for cracks, UV degradation, or damage, and replace the hard hat if it takes a significant impact or shows signs of wear, regardless of class or type.

Where it fits

It's built for general construction, warehousing, and manufacturing work with a top-impact risk and no electrical hazard — hot environments where the adjustable venting earns its keep, and jobs where a comfortable, adjustable, all-day cap-style hat matters. It's not the choice for electrical work (Class C has no rating for that) or lateral-impact-prone tasks (Type 1 only). Pair it with the right eye and hearing protection using our slots for a hot-work hard hat comparison, and check what ANSI/ISEA Z89.1-2014 actually requires for the full standard. If your job also calls for a full-brim option, see our best full-brim hard hat guide.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Skullerz 8972 rated for electrical work?

No. It's Class C, which provides no electrical protection at all — it has zero dielectric rating and is not tested against any voltage. For electrical hazard work you need a Class E (tested to 20,000V) or Class G (tested to 2,200V) hard hat instead.

What does "Type 1" mean on this hard hat?

Type 1 hard hats are tested to reduce the force of impact from an object falling from directly above (top impact). They are not tested for lateral (side) impact — that's Type 2. If your job has a lateral-impact risk, look for a Type 2-rated hard hat.

Does it come with an integrated LED light?

No, this standard version does not — it has front and rear headlamp accessory slots that accept the separately sold Skullerz LED light. If you want a light built in from the start, look for the separate 8972LED model, which bundles the light.

How does the suspension adjust?

A 4-point premium ratcheting suspension with a one-handed adjustment knob at the back — turn it to tighten or loosen the fit without removing the hard hat.

How does the venting work?

An open-frame design combined with adjustable vents lets you open them up for airflow in hot conditions or close them to help keep rain out — you control it based on the weather and task.

Can the brim be worn backward?

Yes. Wearing the brim backward improves upward visibility for overhead work, while the standard forward position blocks sun and rain from your eyes — flip it based on the task.

What accessories can I add?

Side accessory slots accept common attachments like ear protection or a hard hat face shield, and the front/rear headlamp slots accept the Skullerz LED light. Confirm any specific accessory's compatibility with the 8972's slot design before buying.

What sizes does it fit?

Hat sizes 6.5 to 8 (about 21 to 25 inches, or 53 to 63.5 cm head circumference), adjusted within that range via the ratcheting suspension.

Is the sweatband replaceable?

Yes — the padded, moisture-wicking, odor-resistant sweatband and top pad are removable, so you can swap in a fresh one rather than replacing the whole hard hat when it wears out.

What's the difference between this and the Skullerz 8970?

The 8970 is Ergodyne's non-vented cap-style hard hat in the same Skullerz line, while the 8972 adds adjustable venting. Choose the 8972 for hot environments where airflow matters; choose the 8970 if you don't need vents or prefer a fully closed shell.

Does venting reduce impact protection?

No — the vents are part of the certified Type 1, Class C design and don't compromise the ANSI-tested impact rating. Venting affects airflow and comfort, not the shell's top-impact performance.

Can I use this hard hat around electrical panels or overhead lines?

No. Since it's Class C with zero electrical rating, it should not be relied on for any electrical hazard, including proximity to energized equipment or overhead power lines — use a Class E or Class G hard hat for that work instead.

Comfortable hard hat
Fortunately, I haven’t had the “opportunity” to test how well it really protects your head other than the occasional protection from bumps. However, it is comfortable and easy to wear. I feel like the vents help, but I’m not 100% sure how much difference they actually make. Quality seems good and I’m confident that it wouldn’t just crumple if something fell on me.

Good protection - just wished the dedicated lights were rechargeable
Good protection, dial adjustment for quick fit. The front and back both have slide in holders for their dedicated flashlight, but those lights require frequent battery changes. I purchased a set of rechargeable led lights that I attached with Velcro to save that recurring expense.

Amazing
One of the best cradle set ups I’ve ever had with a hard hat, breaths great with the opening and closing vents, and super comfortable.

Nice and lightweight
Use this hard hat for my welding helmet and I got to say it's great. Purchase it for my welding helmet and adaptor for the side of this hat and even a light for the front is a big bonus. Welding and a place to put a light was a great Purchase 👍 now I have to just lift up my hood and turn on the light not waist time on look for light or a flashlight.

Great protection
The inside has these pads that other helmets don't offer. It stays on well. With my old helmet, it was the top of my head that hurt. With this, it is the back of my head. I probably have it too tight.I like the adjustable height. I keep mine as low as possible, but I can see whey certain trades would want to raise it. Nice to have the option.

10/10 the dial folds into the hat so it’s easier to sit flat. Fits great and works well. It’s my favorite hard hat

Good bang for the buck
Comfortable, lightweight. I wear this instead of my lift. I like the adjustability and the head band is much easier on my forehead than my lift.
