Klein Tools KARBN Pattern Hard Hat β Class E, Full Brim, 20kV
The Klein Tools KARBN pattern hard hat is the premium tier of Klein's head protection lineup β the same Class E, non-vented full brim platform as their standard hard hat, upgraded with a hydro-dipped polymer film KARBN design applied over a rugged PC/ABS composite shell. The KARBN (carbon-inspired) pattern is structural β it's integrated into the shell material during the hydro-dipping process, not painted on. This model's defining feature is Klein's patented accessory mount system: headlamps, including Klein's rechargeable and wide-beam models, attach directly to the front and rear mounts without straps, zip ties, or adhesive. Pair the Klein Tools safety glasses and this helmet for a matched Klein PPE kit on any jobsite.

Key Features
KARBN Hydro-Dipped Shell
Hydro-dipping (water transfer printing) applies the KARBN polymer film to the PC/ABS shell before a protective clear coat is applied β not a sticker or paint. The PC/ABS composite provides high impact resistance and dielectric properties required for Class E certification. The KARBN finish is chemical-resistant and does not degrade with normal UV exposure. Avoid contact with solvents and petroleum products, which can attack all hard hat shells regardless of finish.
Patented Headlamp Mounts
Front and rear patented mounts allow Klein headlamps to snap in without straps, zip ties, or mounting hardware. The mount positions headlamps precisely at the correct angle for hands-free lighting β important for overhead work, confined spaces, and low-light panel work. Mounts are cross-compatible with other Klein hard hats including the Klein Type 2 safety helmet and the Klein standard full brim hard hat.
Self-Wicking Sweatband with Top Pad
The machine-washable breathable sweatband and top pad use evaporative technology β wet and shake for hours of cooling effect. The open-frame suspension promotes airflow while maintaining the closed, non-vented shell needed for Class E certification.
Wide Beam Headlamp (SKU 80160)
The wide-beam headlamp included in the 80160 bundle delivers up to 770 lumens in wide-beam mode for large area coverage, switching to narrow focus mode for directed work. Powered by a Klein rechargeable lithium-ion battery. Attaches directly via the front patented mount without any external hardware.
Frequently Asked Questions
Structurally, yes β the KARBN pattern is a hydro-dipped polymer film over the PC/ABS composite shell. The underlying shell provides all the structural and dielectric properties tested under ANSI Z89.1-2014 and CSA Z94.1-15. The pattern does not add or subtract structural protection. The shell material (PC/ABS) is the same grade used in Klein's standard hard hat lineup.
All three use the identical KARBN hard hat shell. SKU 60345 is the hard hat alone. SKU 60346 includes Klein's rechargeable LED headlamp and lithium-ion battery. SKU 80160 includes Klein's wide-beam headlamp with both wide (large-area) and focus (narrow-beam) modes at up to 770 lumens. All three have the same patented front and rear headlamp mounts ready for future accessories.
Yes. SKU 60345 (hard hat only) has the same patented front and rear mounts as the bundle SKUs. Klein's headlamps and wide-beam lights can be purchased separately and attach to the same mounts. This makes the 60345 a lower-cost entry point if headlamp accessories are purchased separately or if the user already has Klein headlamps from another Klein hard hat.
No. The Class E rating under ANSI Z89.1-2014 is conferred by the underlying PC/ABS shell, which is tested at 20,000 volts regardless of the surface finish. The hydro-dipped KARBN film is electrically compatible with the shell and does not degrade the dielectric rating. Workers should still follow OSHA 1910.269 and NFPA 70E approach boundary requirements regardless of hard hat class.
Clean with mild soap and warm water. Avoid solvents, petroleum products, lacquer thinner, or paint thinner β these attack all hard hat shells and can degrade the PC/ABS composite and the hydro-dipped film. The sweatband and top pad are machine washable. ANSI Z89.1 recommends inspecting the shell for crazing, cracks, dents, or perforations after cleaning.
Yes. Temple arms on Klein's 60159/60160 semi-frame glasses, 60164 full-frame glasses, and Klein gasket/OTG glasses are compatible with the suspension system. The universal accessory slots can accommodate face shields via Klein's clip-on attachments.
Klein Tools and ANSI Z89.1 recommend replacing shells every 2β5 years from the date of first use (not manufacture) and suspensions annually. The date of manufacture is stamped inside the shell. Replace immediately after any significant impact or if the shell shows crazing, cracks, or deformation β regardless of age. The KARBN film does not affect the inspection criteria.
Type 1 β tested for top-of-head impact per ANSI Z89.1-2014. For Type 2 lateral impact protection in the Klein lineup, see the Klein Tools Type 2 Class E safety helmet. Your site safety plan and hazard assessment should determine which type is required per OSHA 1910.132 and 1926.100.
