Assessed on the standards the product is actually certified to and on how the format fits a working shift, by Steven Eaton, WC Safety editor.
Allegro's 2050 runs the irritant smoke qualitative fit test protocol β the third OSHA-accepted qualitative agent alongside saccharin and Bitrex, and the lowest-cost complete kit in the category.
Rounds out a testing bench for programs that standardized on the smoke protocol; the involuntary cough response it relies on is also why many programs prefer the taste agents β pick the protocol your written program specifies.

What to check before you buy
Personal protective equipment is the last line of defence, never the first. Under 29 CFR 1910.132 the employer must first eliminate or engineer out the hazard and control what is left administratively; PPE covers the residual risk. Where the residual hazard is a chemical splash hazard, an IDLH atmosphere or an energised circuit, the control is a zero-energy state or a supplied-air system, not a better consumable.
- Qualitative versus quantitative
- Qualitative testing relies on the wearer detecting a test agent and is limited to respirators with an assigned protection factor of 10 or less. Quantitative testing measures fit numerically and is required above that.
- Test agent and sensitivity screening
- Bitrex and saccharin protocols begin with a sensitivity screening to confirm the subject can taste the agent at all. Skipping it invalidates the test.
- Annual requirement
- OSHA 1910.134 requires fit testing before initial use, whenever a different facepiece is used, and at least annually thereafter.
- Medical evaluation comes first
- A medical evaluation is required before fit testing or respirator use. It is not optional and cannot be done after the fact.
