Fall protection is the number one cited OSHA violation year after year, and for good reason — falls remain the leading cause of fatalities in the construction industry and a major cause of serious injuries in general industry. A complete fall protection program is not a single piece of equipment; it is a system of interconnected components working together to arrest a fall, limit fall distance, and make rescue possible. WC Safety reviews MSA Safety's complete V-SERIES® fall protection line — full body harnesses, self-retracting lanyards, energy absorbing lanyards, anchorage connectors, temporary lifeline systems, and confined space products — all engineered to meet the rigorous demands of OSHA 1926.502 and ANSI Z359 standards.
MSA Safety is one of the oldest and most trusted names in worker safety, with over 100 years of engineering experience behind every product in the V-SERIES® fall protection family. The V-SERIES® name encompasses the full range of MSA fall arrest equipment, with each product category designated by a consistent V-prefix that signals quality, testing rigor, and compatibility across the system. V-FIT™ and V-FORM™ full body harnesses, V-TEC® and V-SHOCK® self-retracting lanyards and personal fall limiters, and V-EDGE™ energy absorbing lanyards all share common design principles: maximum worker mobility, minimal equipment weight, and intuitive donning and inspection procedures that reduce the chance of harness misuse in the field.
Fall protection equipment is required by OSHA whenever workers are exposed to fall hazards at heights of 6 feet or more in construction (1926.502) or 4 feet or more in general industry (1910.28). Personal fall arrest systems — the combination of a harness, connecting device, and anchorage — must limit maximum arresting force to 1,800 pounds, bring a falling worker to a complete stop, and limit fall distance to no more than 6 feet with no more than 3.5 feet of deceleration distance. MSA V-SERIES® products are designed, tested, and ANSI Z359-certified to meet all of these requirements.
Selecting the right fall protection system begins with a hazard assessment. The work surface, leading edge exposure, overhead anchorage availability, swing fall potential, and rescue capability all factor into which components are appropriate. MSA's portfolio addresses the full spectrum: standard rooftop and structural steel applications with traditional harness-and-lanyard systems, leading edge work where standard SRLs can fail with specialized V-SHOCK® EDGE personal fall limiters rated for leading-edge hazards, and confined space entry with dedicated tripod systems, winches, and rescue equipment designed specifically for vertical retrieval.
Proper training and inspection are as critical as the equipment itself. OSHA requires that fall protection equipment be inspected before each use by the worker and periodically by a competent person. MSA fall protection equipment includes clear inspection guides, color-coded wear indicators, and simple go/no-go indicators that help workers identify when equipment must be removed from service. After any fall arrest event, all components involved must be taken out of service and inspected by a qualified person before reuse — MSA's designs facilitate this with clear labeling and documented inspection procedures.
WC Safety reviews the complete MSA V-SERIES® fall protection lineup, from individual harnesses and lanyards to complete system kits for new fall protection programs. Whether you need to outfit a single worker or equip an entire crew, our MSA fall protection selection provides the OSHA-compliant, ANSI-certified equipment your safety program demands.

Frequently Asked Questions
When does OSHA require fall protection in construction?
Under OSHA 1926.501, construction work generally requires fall protection at heights of 6 feet or more above a lower level (4 feet for general industry under 1910.28). A personal fall arrest system is one acceptable method. The standard covers leading edges, holes, roofs, and steep slopes, so verify the trigger height for your specific task and surface.
What are the ABCs of a personal fall arrest system?
The ABCs are Anchorage, Body harness, and Connectors. The anchor point ties the system to the structure, a full-body harness distributes arrest forces across the wearer, and connectors (shock-absorbing lanyards or self-retracting lifelines, plus snap hooks and carabiners) link the two. All three must be rated and compatible for the system to perform under OSHA 1926.502 and ANSI Z359.
How strong does a fall protection anchor point need to be?
Under OSHA 1926.502, an anchorage for personal fall arrest must support at least 5,000 lb per attached worker, or be designed and used as part of a system maintaining a safety factor of at least two under the supervision of a qualified person. Never tie off to guardrails, ductwork, or other points not rated as anchors.
Are 3M DBI-SALA fall protection products OSHA and ANSI compliant?
3M DBI-SALA harnesses, lanyards, and SRLs are designed to meet the applicable ANSI Z359 and OSHA 1926.502 requirements, and SRLs are tested to ANSI Z359.14. Compliance also depends on correct selection, anchorage, fit, and use, so confirm each model's rating against your application and follow the manufacturer instructions and inspection schedule.
Do I need to inspect fall protection gear, and when do I retire it?
Yes. OSHA and ANSI Z359 require the user to inspect harnesses, lanyards, and SRLs before each use for cuts, frays, corrosion, deployed energy absorbers, or activated impact indicators, plus a documented competent-person inspection at least annually. Any component subjected to a fall arrest must be removed from service immediately and not reused.
