What does a complete fall protection system actually need?
Short answer: three parts, and all three have to be right. Fall protection is built on the ABC โ Anchorage, Body support, Connecting device. A harness clipped to an inadequate anchor is not protection. A rated anchor with a connector too long for the available clearance is not protection either. The most common failure is not buying the wrong item, it is buying three right items that do not work together at the height you are working.

At what height does OSHA require fall protection?
It depends which standard covers you, and this is the single most missed fact in the category.
- Construction โ 6 feet. 29 CFR 1926.501 requires protection at 6 feet above a lower level.
- General industry โ 4 feet. 29 CFR 1910.28 sets the threshold at 4 feet.
Two feet does not sound like much until you apply the wrong one across a whole site. A warehouse, a manufacturing plant or a facilities team working to the construction number is non-compliant at every 4-to-6-foot exposure they have. There are also lower triggers in specific situations โ work over dangerous equipment is one โ so check the exposure rather than assuming a single site-wide rule.
Note also the hierarchy: personal fall arrest is not the first choice. Eliminating the exposure, then guardrails or other passive protection, come before equipment that catches someone after they have already fallen.
What makes an anchor point strong enough?
A number most people have heard and fewer apply correctly. Under 1926.502(d)(15) an anchorage used for personal fall arrest must be capable of supporting at least 5,000 pounds per employee attached โ or be designed, installed and used as part of a complete system that maintains a safety factor of at least two, under the supervision of a qualified person.
Two consequences worth spelling out. First, "per employee attached" is literal: two workers on one anchor means 10,000 pounds, not 5,000. Second, structural steel you happen to be standing next to is not an anchor until someone competent says it is โ and a roof anchor rated for one thing is not automatically rated for another. Where no single point works, a horizontal lifeline spans the span โ but a horizontal line multiplies the forces at its end anchors, which is exactly why those systems are engineered rather than assembled.
Why is fall clearance the calculation people get wrong?
Because it is not the length of the lanyard. Clearance is the total distance below your anchor that must be free of obstruction for the system to stop you before you reach the next level, and it is a sum of four things: the length of the connecting device, the deceleration distance as an energy absorber tears open, the height of the worker below their own dorsal D-ring, and a safety margin.
Add those up for a 6-foot shock-absorbing lanyard and the required clearance is far more than 6 feet โ which is why people are injured on structures that felt tall enough. OSHA caps the system at 1926.502(d)(16): free fall limited to 6 feet, and arresting force on the body limited to 1,800 pounds when a body harness is used. Those two limits are what the energy absorber exists to satisfy.
This is the single strongest argument for a self-retracting lifeline. An SRL locks within a short distance, so it needs dramatically less clearance than a shock-absorbing lanyard and is often the only compliant option on a lower structure. What happens after the fall is arrested?
The emergency is not over โ and this is the part category pages usually skip. A worker suspended in a harness is in trouble on a clock. Leg straps restrict blood return, the worker may be unconscious or unable to self-rescue, and OSHA 1926.502(d)(20) requires that you provide for prompt rescue or that employees are able to rescue themselves. "Prompt" means planned in advance, not improvised while someone hangs.

Two more post-fall rules: any harness, lanyard or SRL that has arrested a fall must be removed from service, and every component must be inspected by the user before each use and periodically by a competent person.
Are tool lanyards fall protection?
No, and the ratings prove it. Seven of the products in this collection are tool lanyards, and they solve a different problem under a different standard. Tool tethering is dropped-object prevention, covered by ANSI/ISEA 121; personal fall arrest is the ANSI Z359 family and OSHA subpart M.
The load ratings make the distinction unarguable: the tool lanyards here are rated 2, 10 and 15 pounds. They exist to stop a dropped drill striking someone below. Nothing about them relates to arresting a falling person, and no tool tether should ever be connected to a worker as a fall protection component. What is the difference between fall arrest and fall restraint?
Arrest catches you after a fall begins. Restraint stops you reaching the edge in the first place, so no fall occurs โ the connecting device is short enough that you physically cannot get to the hazard. Because a restraint system never experiences arrest forces, its anchor and component requirements are different, and it is generally the safer arrangement when the geometry allows it.
Everything in this collection is specified for fall arrest. If restraint is what your job calls for, that is a system design question for a qualified person rather than an item to add to a basket, and the anchor calculations change accordingly.

Which starting point fits your work?
Roofing. A kit is usually the efficient route because anchor, harness, rope grab and lifeline arrive matched โ the eight kits here are mostly roofing sets with 50 ft lifelines. Pair with how to work on a roof safely.
Steel and elevated structures. Buy the parts separately so you can match the connecting device to the actual clearance, and expect an SRL rather than a lanyard on anything low.
Warehouse and general industry. Remember the 4-foot trigger, and remember that mezzanines, docks and pick modules are where the exposure hides.

We do not tell you which anchor is adequate for your structure โ that is a qualified person's judgement on site, and no category page can make it. At what height is fall protection required?
6 feet in construction under OSHA 1926.501 and 4 feet in general industry under 1910.28. Applying the construction figure in a warehouse leaves every 4-to-6-foot exposure uncovered.
What are the ABCs of fall protection?

How strong does a fall protection anchor need to be?

What is suspension trauma?

Do I need a rescue plan before working at height?
Yes. OSHA 1926.502(d)(20) requires provision for prompt rescue or the ability to self-rescue. Prompt means planned in advance, not improvised while someone is suspended.
Can I reuse a harness after it has arrested a fall?
No. Any harness, lanyard or SRL that has arrested a fall must be removed from service. Components should also be inspected by the user before each use and periodically by a competent person.
