Moldex 4700N100 AirWave N100 Respirator — SmartStrap + Valve — NIOSH-Approved N100 Disposable Respirator

An air-purifying respirator filters air, it does not supply any. Under 29 CFR 1910.134 no air-purifying respirator may be worn in an atmosphere that is IDLH or oxygen-deficient (below 19.5% oxygen). Those conditions require a supplied-air respirator or an SCBA, and no filter or cartridge rating changes that.

Moldex 4700N100 AirWave N100 Respirator — SmartStrap + Valve is Moldex's standard-size NIOSH N100 disposable respirator — combining AirWave cup comfort, SmartStrap self-adjusting headband, and exhalation valve with the highest non-oil filtration class available in a disposable form factor, providing 99.97% efficiency for asbestos, radionuclide, and sub-micron fine-particulate applications.

Great!
Surprisingly comfortable and easy to wear. I didn’t do a fit test, but it felt like the seal around my face was good. These were purchased to wear for a medical test in which no metal can be on me. They look super awkward, but oh well. Trying not to become more disabled, so looks are less important.

Overall great but a few quibbles
Thanks to the strap, easy to put on tighten, as well as loosen and hang around the neck. Reusable for weeks on end. Carbon layer supposedly helps reduce OV odors. I do notice much less of most annoying smells when I'm wearing it - including the infamous constant stench of my city's public transport. However, I often notice this mask has a smell of its own - and this includes new masks, not just used ones - which has a slightly "cheesy" quality (for lack of a better way to describe it that currently comes to mind). This is despite leaving it aired out for days. Secondly, it seems to not do much for the smell of tobacco smoke (which I absolutely detest) from cigarettes/cigars and was one of my primary reasons for getting this mask. I can even easily catch the odor of tobacco smoke from smokers at the other end of the block if it's riding downwind. That said, I'm sure the mask is doing its job of filtering out the vast majority of harmful particles. My final quip is that it's not foldable like the BNX H95B, so I can't put it in my pants pocket. But for an N95, that's a lot to ask for, and is not the standard, so it's more a pro of the BNX instead of a real con of the Moldex 4800, not to mention the Moldex 4800 in theory provides slightly more protection due to its carbon layer. Overall, I would continue buying this for now.

Worked well
I was very glad I had this mask on a recent airplane flight. A woman across the aisle coughed and hacked off and on during the four-hour flight. My glasses did not fog up, and the mask was fairly comfortable and I believe quite effective. I only took it off long enough to drink and eat.

no way to adjust nosebridge, leaves a big gap around my nose. (EDIT: this is easily fixed)
the fatal flaw here is that without a nosebridge adjustment as with a metal plate, there is a large gap around my nose. this is unacceptable for obvious reasons.EDIT: a small piece of cotton with micropore taped to the underside of the nose bridge completely fixes the issue. now it's the best mask again with the best breathability and removes some odors.

Poor product
I have been wearing this exact mask 4800 airwave for years now and I received two boxes of these and they fit way different from past ones and the material is way thinner around the nose area.

IT WORKS GREAT…. but NOT worth the pain or money.
It is actually awesome! The absolute best breathing mask I have ever had….. but, the rubber gasket that goes around your face gets miserably hot and gross feeling.I bought these expensive things because I wanted my son, employees & customers protected while inside their houses. My son was wearing one of these masks & kept telling me how miserable it was but I thought he was just being dramatic. About an hour or so in he took it off and said he was sorry but he can’t wear them. I was mad, I bought these “premium” masks & there not going to get used. Well then I got to experience it. I didn’t last 5 minutes. I tore out the rubber seal to try and make it bearable. It sort of worked, but then it tore (obviously, not meant to have that rubber ring of misery removed)I suggest steering clear of these wretched things….. unless you work in a freezer. If you think I am being annoying & whiney with this review then please, I implore you to not listen to me and by as many as you can. You’ll show me!!!

These are good N95 masks
They are a bit expensive.Have used them many times, I will use one max 8hrs and usually will rotate them (they last many uses), the elastic is adjustable and the fit is good.I have been exposed multiple times while wearing them, and so far I have not tested +.By far the best masks available.

The gold standard N95 mask
Pro:Relatively comfortableRelatively easy to breathe through due to its large wavy surface areaContains no metalAdjustable cloth-wrapped strapsCharcoal layerUSA-made in Culver City CASoft cloth-like liner where it contacts your skinLasts about 3-4 weeks of daily useCon:Kinda pricey (but cheaper than the copay for an ICU bed LOL)It's still a mask and isn't totally fun to wear (but you won't find a better one)

Moldex 4700N100 AirWave N100 Respirator — SmartStrap + Valve

Frequently Asked Questions

What does the exhalation valve on the 4700N100 do?
The exhalation valve opens when you breathe out, allowing warm humid air to exit directly rather than passing back through the filter media. This reduces heat and moisture buildup inside the mask — a significant comfort advantage during extended or physically demanding wear. Inhalation closes the valve, so all inhaled air is filtered normally.
Does the valve on the 4700N100 reduce filtration efficiency?
No. The exhalation valve does not affect inhalation filtration efficiency — the 4700N100 still filters inhaled air at the rated N95/R95/P100 level. The valve only controls exhaled air routing. Note: because exhaled air is not filtered, valved respirators are not appropriate as source-control devices (e.g., in surgical environments or when protecting others from the wearer).
Is a valved respirator like the 4700N100 acceptable for source control?
No. A valved respirator directs exhaled air outward unfiltered and is not appropriate where the wearer must also protect others (surgical settings, some healthcare environments). Facility policies may prohibit valved masks in sterile or at-risk patient areas. For source-control requirements, use an unvalved N95 or a surgical N95.
What does N100 mean for the 4700N100?
N100 indicates NIOSH approval for ≥99.97% filtration of non-oil-based particles — the maximum non-oil efficiency class, identical to P100 efficiency but without oil resistance. The 4700N100 is appropriate for fine non-oil hazards like asbestos (in dry environments) or radionuclide dust. Browse all N99 and N100 respirators .
Is the 4700N100 NIOSH-approved?
Yes. The 4700N100 is NIOSH-approved under 42 CFR 84 as an N100 filtering facepiece. Confirm the TC approval number on the NIOSH Certified Equipment List .
How does the 4700N100 compare to P100?
Both N100 and P100 filter at ≥99.97% efficiency. The difference: P100 is oil-proof (approved for oil aerosol environments with no time limit); N100 is approved only for non-oil particulates. If your environment has any oil mist, use a P100 instead.
Does the 4700N100 require a fit test?
Yes. OSHA 29 CFR 1910.134 requires fit testing before occupational use. See our fit testing guide .
Can the 4700N100 be used for asbestos work?
The N100 filter at ≥99.97% efficiency is appropriate for asbestos abatement in dry environments with no oil aerosols. OSHA's asbestos standards require P100 for most abatement tasks; confirm your specific requirement with a certified industrial hygienist.
Is the 4700N100 reusable?
No, the 4700N100 is a disposable respirator. Discard when soiled, damaged, or when breathing resistance increases.
How many come in a box?
See the product title for pack count. Browse all N99 and N100 respirators .
What hazards does the 4700N100 NOT protect against?
The 4700N100 does not filter gases, vapors, or chemical vapors — only non-oil particulates. It provides no protection against oxygen-deficient atmospheres.
What is the shelf life of the 4700N100?
Typically 5 years from production date in sealed packaging stored in cool, dry conditions. Check the expiration date on the box.
