What to check before you buy
Buy to the published rating, not the headline. Check the manufacturer's stated capacity, dimensions and materials against the job you actually do, and treat any listing that will not publish its numbers as a reason to keep looking.
- Weave density and mil thickness
- A tarp has no working load limit — it is a cover, not a restraint. What it does have is a weave count and a coated thickness in mils; heavier numbers survive wind flap and abrasion longer. Whatever holds the tarp down carries the load, so rate the strap, not the sheet.
- Grommet spacing and hem reinforcement
- Tarps tear at the grommet, not across the middle. Closer grommet spacing and a reinforced, rope-bound hem spread the load; a stamped grommet in an unreinforced hem is the first thing to pull out in wind.
- UV life and storage
- Poly tarps degrade under sunlight: the coating chalks, the weave goes brittle and edges fray. A tarp left staked through a season is a consumable. Dry it before folding — stored damp, it mildews and the coating separates.
