How far from the house should a generator be placed?
Guidance from the CPSC is to run it outdoors and at least 20 feet from the building, with the exhaust directed away from doors, windows and vents. Distance alone does not help if exhaust can drift back inside.
Can I run a generator in the garage with the door open?
No. An open door does not clear CO from an attached structure, and this scenario appears repeatedly in fatal poisoning investigations. Outdoors and away from the building is the only safe placement.
What size generator do I need?
Add the running watts of everything that will run at once, then add the single largest starting surge on top. Motor-driven equipment such as compressors, pumps and refrigeration drives the surge figure.
Do I need a CO alarm if I own a generator?
A working CO alarm inside the building is a sensible backstop, and newer portable generators may include a CO shutoff feature. Neither replaces correct outdoor placement.
Can I plug a generator into a wall outlet?
