The Skrizcable 100 FT 12 Gauge Extension Cord Outdoor, Power Cord with Light, Black Heavy Duty is one of our picks for the extension cord lineup. Everything below comes straight from the manufacturer's published listing - specs, capacities, and dimensions are theirs, not ours.

Cord gauge is a capacity rating: 12 AWG carries 15 amps at 100 feet where a 16-gauge cord overheats at the same load. Jobsite duty means SJTW-jacketed, grounded, lighted-end cords sized for the tool at the far end - and GFCI protection on the circuit, which OSHA requires on construction sites. Inspect for cuts and crushed jackets before each use; damaged cords retire.

What to check before you buy

Gauge against length and load
Voltage drop rises with length and falls with wire size. A 100 ft run pulling serious current needs 12 AWG or heavier; 16 AWG is for light loads over short distances.
Outdoor rating
Cords for outdoor or wet use carry a W in the type designation. Indoor-rated cords used outside are a shock hazard, not just a durability problem.
GFCI protection
On construction sites, receptacles not part of the permanent wiring generally require GFCI protection or an assured equipment grounding conductor program.
Condition of the jacket and plug
OSHA requires that flexible cords be removed from service if the outer jacket is damaged or the grounding pin is missing or bent. Repairs with tape are not compliant.

Frequently asked questions

What gauge extension cord do I need?

It depends on both the current draw and the run length. Lower AWG numbers mean thicker wire and less voltage drop - 12 AWG for heavy tools on long runs, 14 AWG for moderate loads, 16 AWG only for light loads over short distances.

Why does my tool run weakly on a long cord?

Voltage drop. A cord that is too thin for the length delivers less voltage under load, which makes motors run hot and shortens their life. Increase the wire size rather than the cord length.

Do I need a GFCI on a jobsite?

OSHA requires either GFCI protection for receptacles not part of the permanent wiring, or a written assured equipment grounding conductor program. GFCI is the far more common route.

Can I daisy-chain extension cords?

It compounds voltage drop and adds connection points that can overheat or pull apart. Use a single cord of the correct length and gauge instead.

When should a cord be taken out of service?

Any damage to the outer jacket, exposed conductors, a missing or bent grounding pin, or a plug that no longer grips the receptacle. Damaged cords are replaced.

Where do the specifications on this page come from?

They are taken from the manufacturer's published listing. WC Safety does not laboratory-test products, and nothing is claimed here that the manufacturer does not state.

Does WC Safety sell this product?

No. WC Safety is an independent review site and an Amazon Associate. Purchases happen on Amazon, and we earn a commission on qualifying purchases at no extra cost to you.
