- Full-grain, nubuck and suede take different treatments. A wax that restores full-grain leather will mat and darken nubuck permanently.
- Waterproofing is maintenance, not a one-off
- Treatments wear off with abrasion and washing. Reapplication frequency depends on exposure, not on the calendar.
- Dry slowly, away from heat
- Drying leather boots at a heater or fire hardens and cracks the leather. Room temperature with the insoles removed is slower and correct.
- Do not treat over dirt

How often should work boots be waterproofed?
It depends entirely on exposure. Boots worn daily in wet conditions need treating far more often than occasional-use boots - reapply when water stops beading.
Can I dry wet boots by the heater?
No. Direct heat drives moisture out too fast, hardening and cracking the leather and potentially damaging adhesives. Dry at room temperature with the insoles out.
What is the difference between wax and cream?
Waxes and greases give heavier water repellency and darken leather more; creams and conditioners feed the leather with less color change. Nubuck and suede need dedicated sprays.
Does waterproofing affect breathability?
Heavy wax treatments do reduce it. Membrane-lined boots are usually treated with sprays that leave the membrane able to pass vapor.
