What to check before you buy
- Splash, dust and fine dust are separate ratings
- ANSI/ISEA Z87.1 marks D3 for splash and droplet, D4 for dust and D5 for fine dust. A goggle rated for dust is not automatically rated for chemical splash.
- Direct versus indirect venting
- Indirect vents keep liquid out while allowing airflow, which is the chemical-splash configuration. Direct vents breathe better but let splash through.
- Seal against the face
- The seal is the whole point of a goggle. Facial hair, temple arms of prescription glasses and poor strap tension all break it.
- Goggles are primary protection
- Unlike a face shield, goggles are primary eye protection - and are what a shield should be worn over.

Frequently asked questions
When do I need goggles instead of safety glasses?
When the hazard can reach the eye from the side or below - chemical splash, fine dust, or high-velocity particles from unpredictable directions. Goggles seal; glasses do not.
What do D3, D4 and D5 mean?
They are ANSI/ISEA Z87.1 markings: D3 for splash and droplet, D4 for dust, D5 for fine dust. Check which one your hazard requires.
Can I wear goggles over prescription glasses?
Only OTG-rated goggles. Forcing standard goggles over frames breaks the seal, which removes the protection you chose goggles for.
Direct or indirect vents?
Indirect vents for chemical splash - they block liquid while allowing air. Direct vents give more airflow and suit dust and impact where splash is not a factor.
Do goggles replace a face shield?
No, the relationship runs the other way. Goggles are primary protection; a face shield is secondary and is worn over them for grinding, splash and molten hazards.
Where do the specifications on this page come from?
They are taken from the manufacturer's published listing. WC Safety does not laboratory-test products, and nothing is claimed here that the manufacturer does not state.
Does WC Safety sell this product?
No. WC Safety is an independent review site and an Amazon Associate. Purchases happen on Amazon, and we earn a commission on qualifying purchases at no extra cost to you.
