- Toe cap material
- Steel is thinnest for a given protection level; composite is non-metallic and does not conduct temperature or trip metal detectors; alloy sits between the two.
- Electrical hazard vs. static dissipative
- EH insulates the wearer from live circuits; SD does the opposite and bleeds static to ground. They are not interchangeable and choosing wrongly removes the protection you wanted.
- Fit over the whole shift
- Feet swell during a shift. A boot fitted tight first thing in the morning is a different boot by mid-afternoon.

It is the US performance standard for protective footwear. The marking states the impact and compression rating and any additional protections such as metatarsal, electrical hazard, static dissipative, puncture resistance or conductive properties.
Is a composite toe as protective as steel?
For the rated impact and compression class, yes - the rating is what matters, not the material. Composite is non-metallic and thermally less conductive; steel achieves the same rating in a thinner cap.
Does OSHA require safety-toe boots?
OSHA requires protective footwear where there is a danger of foot injury from falling or rolling objects, objects piercing the sole, or electrical hazards. The employer assesses the hazard and specifies accordingly.
What is a metatarsal boot for?
