- Laser class
- Most construction lasers are Class 2 or Class 3R. Class 2 relies on the blink reflex for eye safety; 3R carries a higher risk on direct intrabeam viewing. Neither should be aimed at people.
- Accuracy specification and range
- Accuracy is quoted as a deviation over a distance, such as fractions of an inch at 100 feet. Comparing two units means comparing at the same distance.
- Self-leveling range
- Self-leveling units correct only within a small tilt window, commonly a few degrees. Beyond it the unit warns rather than silently reading wrong - check that it does.

Are laser levels dangerous to the eyes?
Construction lasers are usually Class 2 or 3R. Class 2 is considered safe for accidental viewing because of the blink reflex; Class 3R raises the risk on sustained direct viewing. Do not stare into the beam or aim it at anyone.
Why is a green laser easier to see?
The human eye is most sensitive in the green part of the spectrum, so a green beam appears considerably brighter than a red beam of the same power.
What does self-leveling mean?
A pendulum or electronic compensator brings the beam to true level within a limited tilt range. Outside that range the unit should indicate a fault rather than display an inaccurate line.
How accurate is accurate enough?
It depends on the work and the distance. A tolerance quoted at 30 feet may be irrelevant if you are shooting grade at 100 feet, so compare specifications at your working distance.
Do I need a detector?
For outdoor or long-range work, usually yes. Beam visibility to the naked eye drops off quickly in daylight, and a detector extends usable range well beyond what you can see.
