- Shelving is rated per level with an evenly distributed load, not as one total. Stacking everything heavy on one beam is the usual cause of failure.
- Anchoring and tip-over
- Tall, narrow units need to be anchored to the wall or floor. Height-to-depth ratio is what drives tip-over risk, and loading the top levels first makes it worse.

How much weight can a shelf hold?
Manufacturers rate shelving per level, assuming the load is spread evenly across the beam. Concentrated loads at the center of a beam impose far higher stress than the rating implies.
Does shelving need to be anchored?
Tall or narrow units generally do. Anchoring is what prevents tip-over when a unit is loaded unevenly or when someone climbs it, and manufacturers specify it in the assembly instructions.
