Ergodyne Skullerz 8960 Bump Cap Overview

The Ergodyne Skullerz 8960 Bump Cap is a baseball-cap-style bump cap with a built-in 48-lumen LED brim light for hands-free visibility, plus a removable impact-resistant insert that cushions minor bumps and scrapes.

As the Ergodyne 8960 bump cap, this bump cap with LED light is an LED brim bump cap and a baseball style bump cap β€” an EN 812 bump cap for tight, low-clearance work.

It runs on four included CR2032 batteries for up to 30 hours, comes in short or long brim and three colors, and meets ANSI/ISEA 100-2024 and EN 812-2012. It is not a hard hat and does not protect against falling objects. Learn the difference in hard hats vs bump caps and hard hat classes explained.

Who It Is For

Use case Fit Buyer guidance
Low-clearance bump hazards Purpose-built Cushions minor bumps and scrapes.
Dark or low-light work Purpose-built 48-lumen hands-free LED brim.
Mechanics, baggage, in-home Strong Where no hard hat is required.
Falling / flying objects Choose a hard hat A bump cap is not ANSI Z89.1.
Electrical hazards Choose Class E No electrical rating.

Be clear on what a bump cap is and is not. The 8960 cushions minor bumps and scrapes from striking fixed objects, and it meets the ANSI/ISEA 100 and EN 812 bump cap standards, but it is not a hard hat: it does not meet ANSI Z89.1, does not protect against falling or flying objects, and has no electrical rating. Where a falling-object or electrical hazard exists, or your site requires ANSI Z89.1 head protection, you must wear a hard hat, not this cap. And head protection of any kind does not keep you from falling β€” if you work at height above the trigger in OSHA 1926.501, you still need a personal fall arrest system of an anchor, a full-body harness, and a connecting device. Use the 8960 for the low-clearance, no-overhead-hazard work it is designed for, and keep spare CR2032 batteries so the light is ready. See best safety helmet and Type I vs Type II if you actually need a hard hat.

How It Compares

The 8960 is the lighted bump cap in the line. Weigh it against nearby options:

Option Type Light Best for
Skullerz 8960 (this page) Bump cap 48-lumen LED brim Low-light, low-clearance work
Skullerz 8950 baseball bump cap Bump cap None Basic bump protection
Skullerz 8966 cap-style hard hat Hard hat None Falling-object hazards (ANSI)

Choose the Ergodyne Skullerz 8960 Bump Cap for a lighted bump cap, the Skullerz 8950 for a basic bump cap, or the Skullerz 8966 hard hat when you need real ANSI Z89.1 protection. Compare in hard hats vs bump caps.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a bump cap the same as a hard hat?

No. A bump cap protects against minor bumps and scrapes from bumping into fixed objects like pipes, racks, or low ceilings. A hard hat meets ANSI Z89.1 and protects against falling or flying objects. They are different products for different hazards; a bump cap is not a hard-hat substitute.

What does the 8960 protect against?

Its removable impact-resistant insert cushions minor bumps, scrapes, and bruises from striking stationary objects. It does not protect against falling tools, dropped materials, or flying debris, and it has no electrical rating, so it is only for environments without those hazards.

What standard does the 8960 meet?

It meets ANSI/ISEA 100-2024 and EN 812-2012, the recognized standards for industrial bump caps. Those are separate from the ANSI Z89.1 hard-hat standard, so the bump cap does not carry a Type or Class hard-hat rating.

How bright are the LED lights?

The built-in brim lights emit about 48 lumens for hands-free visibility in dark or low-light work, so you can see without holding a flashlight or wearing a bulky headlamp. It aims the light where you are looking.

What batteries does it use and how long do they last?

It runs on four CR2032 lithium coin batteries, which are included, for up to about 30 continuous hours of light. Keep spare CR2032 cells on hand, and turn the lights off when you do not need them to extend battery life.

Can I wear it where a hard hat is required?

No. If your site or task requires ANSI Z89.1 head protection because of a falling or flying object hazard, you must wear a hard hat, not a bump cap. Use the 8960 only where hard-hat protection is not required.

What brim options and colors are there?

It comes in a short 2-inch brim or a long 3-inch brim, in black, navy, or hi-vis lime. Choose the brim length for your preference and the color for visibility or your site's dress code.

Is the bump cap insert removable?

Yes. The flanged impact-resistant insert with its foam cushioning liner is removable, which lets you take it out to clean the cap fabric or replace the insert. Reinstall it correctly so the protection sits where it should.

Who is the 8960 for?

It suits mechanics, airline baggage handlers, food processing and manufacturing, in-home inspection and install, pest control, and similar work with low-clearance bump hazards but no falling-object hazard. For overhead hazards, use a hard hat instead.

Can I wash the cap?

Remove the bump insert and the batteries first, then clean the fabric cap per the care label. Do not machine wash the electronics or insert. Let everything dry fully before reassembling so the lights and cushioning work as intended.

Can I replace the batteries?

Yes. The four CR2032 coin cells are replaceable, so you can swap them when the lights dim. Use fresh, matching cells, and dispose of used batteries per local rules rather than in general trash.

Does it protect against electrical hazards?

No. A bump cap has no electrical rating, unlike a Class E or Class G hard hat. Do not use it for electrical work; where an electrical head-protection hazard exists, wear an appropriately rated Class E hard hat instead.

A good product
The lights on this cap work really well and are neatly fitted into the peak. The battery is the replacable button 2023 type and not the micro-USB type which I prefer.

Great fit, comfortable bump cap with nice LED lighting.
Everything that I expected for a bump cap with the added feature of LED lighting. Fits well, with adjustable strap on back and is comfortable. We had to get these or similar bump caps when working on jet aircraft to keep from getting our heads smacked by sharp exposed edges of doors and other things. It's already saved me a couple headaches and probably a few stitches, so I am grateful to have this in my tool kit!

Great protection
This hat works great. When looking in and under vehicle motors I don’t have to worry about bumping my head. The lights are very helpful and a huge plus.

Head saver with benefits!
Saved my head a few times already. I was actually hoping to find something more in the line of a skull cap. (I didn't want a bill getting in the way) I came across this one that advertised a short bill. Hat seems to be made well. Bought the "deluxe" model. LED lights! These work great, but are sewn into the cap. Yes the batteries are easily accessible, but with no way of taking these out of the hat; I do not know if they would hold up to machine washing.(I am not even going to try, so there will be no update there) The hard piece does come out easily though. The cap is made to fit most. Where in lies the next short coming. With basically just a small velcro strap in the back for adjustment. This cap sits a little loose on my head. I have to be careful rolling around under equipment on my creeper. Could use another way of securing. Not bad enough for me to knock off anymore stars. I am overall satisfied with this hat, but I certainly wouldn't mind finding one more form fitted to my head. Seen just the inserts out there for ball caps, but if anyone knows of a more form fitted skull type out there?

Aviation Must Have
This bump cap is a must have for A&P technicians. The light built into the brim works perfectly to be hands free and not having a bulky headlamp on top of a bump camp. Definitely will be getting another.

A lifesaver! I had to install recessed lighting in a cramped attic with lots of roofing nails poking through. I must have bumped my head 100 times, but this saved my noggin.

Better than hard hat
It’s all I hoped it would be. Tough but not too heavy. The lights are bright and well located.

Update, back Velcro strap doesn't last
Update: the Velcro strap fails within a few months. At first I thought it was something I did so I bought another and same thing. I didn't get back here soon enough to return it but wanted others to beware. I don't pull it, it literally hangs off my pager so no stress on it when walking around withit. Light still works good but if you can't keep the cap on it is of no use so I am reducing my score on it to 2 stars.Original review: As an engineering manager I don't always need a flashlight but those times when I do, having them as part of my bump cap is perfect.

Light could be brighter
Well made and comfortable. Light does work and is in good place but when working in the dark of my attic, light was too dim. Still needed flashlight.
