What to check before you buy

Capacity per shelf level

Shelving is rated per level with an evenly distributed load, not as one total. Stacking everything heavy on one beam is the usual cause of failure.

Anchoring and tip-over

Tall, narrow units need to be anchored to the wall or floor. Height-to-depth ratio is what drives tip-over risk, and loading the top levels first makes it worse.

Decking type

Wire decking allows sprinkler flow through the rack and does not trap debris; solid decking supports small items but can obstruct overhead sprinklers.

Damage inspection

Bent uprights and deformed beams have lost capacity that cannot be judged by eye. Damaged rack components are replaced, not straightened.

Manufacturers rate shelving per level, assuming the load is spread evenly across the beam. Concentrated loads at the center of a beam impose far higher stress than the rating implies.

Does shelving need to be anchored?

Can I climb my storage racks?
