- Qualitative testing relies on the wearer detecting a test agent and is limited to respirators with an assigned protection factor of 10 or less. Quantitative testing measures fit numerically and is required above that.

Qualitative is a pass/fail test based on whether the wearer detects a test agent. Quantitative uses an instrument to measure leakage numerically and is required for respirators with an assigned protection factor above 10.
How often is fit testing required?
OSHA 1910.134 requires it before first use, whenever a different respirator facepiece is used, when physical changes could affect fit, and at least annually.
Why is a sensitivity check needed first?
It confirms the subject can actually taste the test agent. Without it, a "pass" may simply mean the person cannot detect the substance, which tells you nothing about the seal.
Can I fit test my own employees?
Yes, provided the test is conducted per an OSHA-accepted protocol in Appendix A of 1910.134 and the person conducting it is competent to do so.
Does a fit test cover every respirator I own?
No. Fit testing is specific to the make, model, style and size. A different facepiece requires a new test.
