The 3M 60926 Multi-Gas P100 Cartridge is 3M's broadest combination cartridge — NIOSH-approved against ten chemical categories, from organic vapor and acid gas to ammonia, formaldehyde, and hydrogen fluoride, paired with a P100 particulate filter. It sits at the top of our multi-gas cartridge range as the one-cartridge answer for mixed or uncertain chemical hazards.

Its breadth is the whole point — and also the thing to think about. "Multi-gas" covers a wide list but not every gas, and for a single known hazard a narrower cartridge is often the smarter buy. Below we spell out exactly what it covers, what it does not, and when to reach for something else.

What the 3M 60926 Multi-Gas P100 Cartridge Protects Against

The 60926 pairs a broad multi-gas sorbent with a P100 particulate filter (99.97% of oil and non-oil aerosols, magenta band). Its NIOSH approval spans ten chemical categories: certain organic vapors, chlorine, hydrogen chloride, sulfur dioxide, chlorine dioxide, hydrogen sulfide, ammonia, methylamine, formaldehyde, and hydrogen fluoride. That combined coverage is why it is the go-to cartridge for environments where several gases — or an uncertain mix within its rating — appear alongside dust or mist. On a 3M bayonet facepiece it can be used up to 10 times the PEL on a half mask and 50 times on a quantitatively fit-tested full facepiece.

The trade-off with any broad cartridge is efficiency: a narrower cartridge is lighter, cheaper, and breathes easier, and it often lasts longer against a single contaminant. So reach for the 60926 when your hazard is genuinely mixed or unknown-within-rating, and drop to a matched cartridge when it is not — the 60921 for organic vapor, the 60922 for acid gas, the 60923 for organic vapor plus acid gas, the 60924 for ammonia, or the 60925 for formaldehyde. Our multi-gas cartridge guide maps the choice.

Safety note: This is an air-purifying cartridge — it does not supply oxygen. Never use it in an oxygen-deficient or IDLH atmosphere, against carbon monoxide (which no cartridge filters), or above its concentration limits; those require a supplied-air respirator or an SCBA. "Multi-gas" covers a broad list, not every gas — match it to a measured contaminant, and because some covered gases such as formaldehyde and hydrogen sulfide have poor warning properties, follow a written change schedule and gas monitoring rather than relying on odor.

Where It Fits in the 3M 60900 Line

The 60900 series is a ladder of combination cartridges on the same P100 platform, and the 60926 sits at the top for breadth. Below it, each cartridge trades coverage for economy: organic-vapor-only, acid-gas-only, organic-vapor-plus-acid-gas, ammonia, and formaldehyde. Above and beside it, the 60928 adds mercury vapor and chlorine with an end-of-service-life indicator. All of them fit the same 3M 6000, 7000, and FF-400 facepieces, so you can match the cartridge to the hazard without changing masks. If you only need particulate, a filter like the 3M 2091 P100 is the lighter option, and for a broader look at respirator selection start with when do you need a respirator.

Pros & Cons

Strengths

  • Broadest 3M combination — 10 chemical categories
  • Organic vapor, acid gas, ammonia, formaldehyde, HF in one
  • P100 particulate (99.97%) for dust, fume, and mist
  • Up to 10x PEL (half) / 50x PEL (full facepiece)
  • Fits any 3M 6000/7000/FF-400 bayonet respirator

Limitations

  • Does not filter carbon monoxide — needs supplied air
  • Broader and pricier than a matched single-gas cartridge
  • No ESLI — poor-warning gases need a change schedule
  • 3M bayonet only — not cross-brand
  • Not for isocyanate 2K spraying (supplied-air preferred)

Frequently Asked Questions

Exactly which gases and vapors does the 60926 protect against?

NIOSH approves the 60926 against ten chemical categories: certain organic vapors, chlorine, hydrogen chloride, sulfur dioxide, chlorine dioxide, hydrogen sulfide, ammonia, methylamine, formaldehyde, and hydrogen fluoride — plus non-oil and oil particulate at P100 (99.97%). It is the broadest single cartridge in the 3M 60900 line, combining organic vapor, acid gas, ammonia, and formaldehyde coverage in one housing.

Does the 60926 protect against carbon monoxide?

No. No air-purifying cartridge, however broad, filters carbon monoxide — CO passes straight through sorbent media. Carbon monoxide requires a supplied-air respirator or a CO-specific system with monitoring. Never assume a "multi-gas" cartridge covers CO.

How do I choose between the 60926 and a narrower single-gas cartridge?

Match the cartridge to your actual hazard. If you face several gases at once, or an uncertain mix within its rating, the 60926's breadth is the point. But for a single known hazard, a narrower cartridge is lighter, cheaper, breathes easier, and often lasts longer — the 60921 for organic vapor, the 60922 for acid gas, the 60923 for organic vapor plus acid gas, the 60924 for ammonia, or the 60925 for formaldehyde. Buy breadth only when you need it.

What is the difference between the 60926 and the 60928?

Both are broad multi-gas P100 cartridges, but the 60928 adds mercury vapor and chlorine with an end-of-service-life indicator (ESLI) for those, which the 60926 does not have. If mercury vapor is part of your hazard, look at the 60928; for the wide gas mix without mercury, the 60926 is the standard choice.

Does the 60926 protect against hydrogen sulfide?

Hydrogen sulfide is in the 60926's NIOSH-approved list, but H2S is acutely toxic and deadens your sense of smell, so treat it with extra caution: rely on gas monitoring and a strict change schedule, not odor, and confirm the specific H2S provisions and any escape limitations on the approval label before entry. For high H2S or oxygen-uncertain work, consider a supplied-air respirator.

Does formaldehyde or another poor-warning gas change how I use it?

Yes. Several covered gases — formaldehyde among them — have poor warning properties, meaning you can be overexposed before you smell anything, and the cartridge has no end-of-service-life indicator for them. Use a written change schedule based on your exposure rather than waiting for odor or taste, especially where formaldehyde or hydrogen sulfide is present.

Is the 60926 compatible with non-3M masks like Honeywell, MSA, or GVS?

No. The 60926 uses the 3M bayonet connection and fits only 3M 6000, 7000, and FF-400 series facepieces. It is not interchangeable with Honeywell/North, MSA, Moldex, or GVS Elipse masks — mixing brands voids the NIOSH approval and can compromise the seal.

What is the assigned protection factor of the 60926?

Fitted correctly, it can be used up to 10 times the PEL on a half facepiece and up to 50 times on a quantitatively fit-tested full facepiece, for the gases and particulate in its rating. If your measured exposure exceeds those multiples, you need a powered or supplied-air respirator, not this cartridge.

Do I need a fit test with the 60926?

Yes. Any tight-fitting respirator used at work requires an OSHA fit test and a user seal check each time you don it, and it will not seal over facial hair on the sealing surface. A cartridge only performs behind a properly sealed facepiece — a leak lets contaminated air bypass it entirely.

Can I use the 60926 for spraying 2K (isocyanate) automotive paint?

Be cautious. While the 60926's organic-vapor stage covers many solvents, NIOSH and coatings-industry guidance favor a supplied-air respirator for spraying two-component (2K) isocyanate finishes, because isocyanate aerosol has poor warning properties and spray concentrations can exceed an air-purifying respirator's protection factor. Use an air-purifying cartridge for isocyanates only where an exposure assessment and your written program confirm it is adequate.

What particulate does the P100 side capture?

The P100 filter captures at least 99.97% of oil and non-oil airborne particles — dusts, fumes, and mists, including hazards like silica, lead, and welding fume on the particulate side. That is why the 60926 works where gas and particulate hazards occur together; the sorbent handles the gases and the P100 handles the dust.

How should I store the 60926 between uses?

Store it sealed in an airtight bag, away from the contaminants it filters, and out of heat and direct sun. Leaving a cartridge open lets it passively load with vapor and shortens its service life. Note the date you first open it and factor that into your change schedule.

Specifications reflect 3M's published listing for cartridge/filter 60926 (UPC 50051138541878), NIOSH-approved against ten chemical categories plus P100 particulate. This is an air-purifying cartridge for breathable, below-limit atmospheres; it does not filter carbon monoxide and is not supplied-air protection. Match it to a measured contaminant, run a written change schedule for poor-warning gases, and confirm the approval label before entering any hazardous atmosphere.

asy to Use, But Hard to Gauge Effectiveness
These filter cartridges are super easy to install and replace, which I really appreciate—no complicated steps or tools needed. They fit snugly into the mask and feel secure during use. That said, the one downside is it's hard to tell how well they’re actually filtering. There’s no visual indicator or clear way to measure performance over time, so I mostly have to trust they’re doing their job. Overall, convenient and user-friendly, but I’d love more transparency or reassurance about effectiveness.

These filters and 6502 mask got me through the worst backed up sewer stench imaginable
It’s about 10:30pm and right before I’m about to call it a night I hear my mother (who had recently moved in with me due to cancer issues) yelling that she can hear water rushing out of her 1st floor bathroom. I run down and get hit with the most vile, nauseating stench I’d ever experienced in addition to seeing the bathroom floor quickly flooding from what appeared to be a sudden blockage. I ran to the garage and grabbed my tools, including the 6502 mask with these filters and a manual snake tool to try and clear the pipes. When I rushed back I couldn’t tell the air was even off by a little bit…nothing bad pierced these things! Was able to get the whole problem solved in less than an hour (although I put my mom up at a nice hotel that evening since the smell wasn’t so quick to depart).

I didn't smell the 2K?
I needed better gear for my 2K clear project, so I got what I hope was the right cartridges. I had brand new cartridges for the adhesion promoter and color coats, and these for the clear. I was very thorough, taped gloves to cuffs, goggles and respirator taped up to my over-suit, etc. It was 65°F ambient and I was sweating like a fiend but I didn't smell much at all and I feel like I was well protected. I threw them away as soon as I left the booth. This purchase was brilliant.

Work Exceptionally Well
I should have left this review a month ago. These cartridges work EXCEPTIONALLY well, and let me tell you why.I bought tub and tile refinish kits to redo a comically yellow shower surround. Those kits smell EVIL. I put on the mask, mixed the paint, and put on the first coat. Whole thing took about 1.5 - 2 hours. After that I took off the mask—and I gagged! The smell was so overpowering I had to run out the laundry room door and get my breath, but the whole time I had the mask on with these cartridges I had no idea the smell was strong enough to spread through most of the house! If I could be at ground zero and smell nothing using these cartridges—they work! They’re pricier than the other types but well worth it. If you’re on the fence, do it.

Works for TRICHOTHECENE MYCOTOXINS!!!! Awesome******
Successfully Filters TRICHOTHECENES. This review may sound like Chinese to many of you (at least until there is more of a public awakening about this crisis). But I want to reach those that will understand the relevance, as it may help you know what to choose. I didn't even need the 60928 filter model. The "professionals" needed three tries to finally successfully remediate my house for mold in 2012. They promised that the indoor air quality (IAQ) in my house was then pristine-- based on follow-up 5-minute air-sample mold testing (which is beyond the scope of this review, but is a complete farce in and of itself). However, they forget (or were too clueless) to tell me about one MINOR issue (facetiousness intended)-- that even the best enzyme-based bioremediation products on the market do ABSOLUTELY NOTHING for the residual TRICHOTHECENES in your carpet, on your linens and clothes and furniture, etc.Trichothecene poisoning has led to my toxic encephalopathy, polyendocrinopathy, hypogammglobulinemia, etc etc, and MCS / Toxicant Induced Loss of Tolerance (TILT) / Gulf war syndrome-type syndrome (GWSTS). I'm not whining, simply elaborating enough so that you know that I'm extremely familiar with human mycotoxicosis, and especially the hypersensitive phase of Trichothecene mycotoxicosis. With that preamble-- and due to the incompetence and/or dispassion and/or callousness and/or fear of the men that promised me a clean and healthy IAQ in my house-- I've been left to fend for myself with the Trichothecene contaminated carpet. It took me many months of remaining sick despite agressive therapies to figure out that something was still awry in my house. I finally narrowed it down to the carpet-- and sent samples to an independent lab in March 2014. Trichothecenes were 22.3ppb (translation = 111.5 times above the government-set toxic human threshold). Would have been swell to know this 2 years ago........ Might not still be out of a job and in bed an average of 18+hours/day.So, after requesting carpet removal help from the aforementioned crew-- which by the way are some of the "nations leading mold remediation experts" from both the East and West coasts-- and now 3 months and still waiting for them to squeeze me into their schedules-- TO FINISH AN INCOMPLETED 2-year OLD JOB-- my 71 year old parents and myself have decided that its not gonna get done, and get done right, unless we do it ourselves. I figure that with my health, the project will take about 6 months....... But if its the carpet that is keeping me sick, what other choice is there.Sooooooo---- over past few weeks, I've spent couple partial days taking every precaution, wearing a Tychem suit, a 3M 6900 mask with two 60926 canisters....... Creating plastic vapor barriers to contain the disturbed microbial VOC's......And pulling HIGHLY CONTAMINATED carpet that is filled with dust-bound and free-floating Trichothecene VOC biowarfare neurotoxins.A transient single whiff of Tricho's used to put me in bed with flu-like symptoms for weeks at a time. And while the energy required to perform the current task is challenging due to baseline symptoms, I have NOT experienced any signs or symptoms of EXOGENOUS re-exposure while wearing the 6900 with 60926 canisters. So, I highly recommend them for anyone wondering/needing something to filter macrocyclic sesquiterpene Trichothecenes (a product of Stachybotyrs, Fusarium, Trichoderma molds which can be found in homes with visible OR INAPPARENT water-damage issues). Be safe.

The best filters for urban exploring and lost places
We bought these respirator filters for our urbex hobby, one pack for me and two friends. All three of our 3M half masks are equipped with them when we explore old, dirty buildings. The filters keep asbestos dust, mold spores, and unpleasant odors out very effectively and their low breathing resistance makes it easy to wear the mask for long periods. Especially in buildings with a lot of dust, dirt, or musty smells, the difference is noticeable, the air feels much cleaner, and we feel safer than with regular disposable dust masks. For us, these were exactly what we needed, durable, reliable, and easy to attach to our masks. Highly recommended for anyone who takes respiratory protection seriously while urban exploring.

It's true
First, I can't (nor can most or all of the reviewers here) actually review this from a truly technical perspective; I can't say if it's actually protecting against all of the stuff it claims to. For that, I defer to the eminence of the 3M brand, federal regulation, etc.So what can I say? I can say with honesty that when paired with a full face respirator (in this case the 6800), this thing really DOES prevent me from smelling anything. Once I confirmed a proper seal with the full face mask (I prefer full face to partial) I spend some time grinding metal in a garage. Normally the stink of this is quite substantial, yet with this one I could smell absolutely nothing. Then today I was sanding some residual mortar from a tile floor I was demoing. Could not smell ANYTHING!FYI The P100 particulate rating of this will not decay over time. In fact, particulate filters get better over time (even though they will make breathing harder). The vapor rating will decrease and, at some point, I will start smelling things I currently cannot.Anyway, the manufacturing date on my filter said september 2016. The Expire date on the filter's air tight packaging said September 2021. This means if you open by Sept 2021 you're good to go. To maximize life span of this, since the carbon that absorbs vapors is always "working", I simply put a strip of masking tape over each filter when not using it, trusting that the rubber flaps inside the mask cover air access from the other side. An alternative would be to put the filters or the mask in a bag.

Seems to work well
Throughout my life I've generally treated my lungs like crap and I'm ashamed to admit that I still smoke.I'm sure to non smokers the idea of a filter may seem like a waste of time but likely due to my smoking I've found my breathing more sensitive to other activities as well.I'm a mechanic by trade but also have the tendency to take on any task I need competed in life on my own. Both my work and that tendency likely expose me to many things that I shouldn't be breathing.Since purchasing a mask and some of these filters I've tried to make myself use them whenever I find myself approaching a situation that seems risky or any that have irritated my breathing in the past. I'm unaware if these filters are built to handle all of the crap I put myself through, but I have noticed that every time I use them I don't find myself suffering even worse breathing like used to occur at times.Things like burning brush, cleaning foam air filters or chains (use strong cleaner that chokes me up bad), grinding, and swinging a stick like a samurai while fighting hanging insulation in a damp, foggy crawlspace never seem all that bothersome anymore. They even block the smells. Just got back from that terrible crawlspace a minute ago and came here just to brag about how well these worked.I'll admit that the filters require more effort to breathe through than what natural breathing requires, but I've not noticed any desire to yawn, gulp, or hyperventilate even after 30 minutes to an hour in the mask during moderate physical activity.I feel like these are a great general purpose filter for people who may find themselves doing many random tasks. Certainly feels a lot better afterwards. Now if I can just drop cigarettes again I'll be set.

Better than previous filter for noxious fumes in building with nearby meth lab
I'll be frank. About 3 months ago, noxious fumes started entering my apartment, and everything about them (smells, residue, symptoms) are consistent with a meth lab. I've talked to apartment management and law enforcement, but all I got was a nasty letter from the apartment management's lawyer telling me that I couldn't hire a contractor to test for what I was being exposed to without their permission. My attorney told me to stop living there, and to move my things out ASAP, and due to the health effects of the fumes (heart palpitations, chest pains, burning eyes and verifiable eye damage consistent with meth labs, burning throat, nosebleeds, dizziness, confusion, numbness of my face, etc.) I started to wear a respirator when I entered the building to retrieve my stuff. At first I used the magenta/yellow filters that came with the respirator, but the symptoms were only slightly better, and I couldn't spend much time in the apartment without becoming so dizzy that I actually fell over once and hurt my wrist. After some research on Amazon, I found these magenta/olive filters, and they help much more than the magenta/yellow. With the magenta/olive filters, I do get the feeling my legs are going to collapse under me when I first enter the apartment (probably from ether, the same thing that would cause numbness -- and no little filter like this could take all of it out of the air), and I get a slight taste of pretzels on my tongue, with a chemical taste to my tongue after exit the building and taking the respirator off, but it takes about 2 hours now for some of the bad symptoms like dizziness to start, so these filters give me at least some time to work on moving out. And today when I took off my respirator, I could smell the toluene odor on my hair or clothes, so I know it was still present in my apartment, but these filters must have blocked its smell for me (think that toluene smells like pretzels through these filters). Today I finally smelled formaldehyde when using the respirator, and I'd used the same filters for maybe 4 days, a couple of hours at a time, so my best guess is that they last about 8 hours. I have an extra set to switch out now, and ordered more today.

Holes in packaging - can't trust the filter lifespan
I ordered one pack of filters and a friend ordered 3 more packs to go with his mask. Every pack of filters came in the official foil packaging, but also every pack of filters had a hole in the packaging. Mine was a small but jagged tear, his were all pinholes near the top folds of the packaging, but they went all the way into the inside of the bag.The filters still work, but they cannot be trusted to work for a full 50-200 hours like 3M states. They also can't sit on the shelf for 5 years like they're supposed to: the filters must be discarded 6 months after opening.Mine arrived in August and were manufactured in May, so without knowing exactly when they were ripped open, I can basically only trust them in use once or twice. Will be ordering the next filters from Grainger or some other PPE/Safety supplier who knows how to handle this type of critical safety equipment.
