What to check before you buy
- Distributed capacity, not shelf capacity
- Cart ratings are usually the total across all shelves with the load spread evenly. Concentrating weight on one shelf or one corner is what bends frames.
- Caster size against the floor
- Small casters are fine on smooth sealed concrete and terrible over cracks, cords and thresholds. Larger diameter wheels roll over obstacles that stop small ones dead.
- Shelf clearance
- Measure the tallest thing you actually move. Fixed-shelf carts are cheaper; adjustable shelves cost more but survive a change of use.
- Brakes
- A cart that will be loaded while stationary, or used on any slope, needs locking casters. Two locking casters is the usual minimum.

How much weight can a utility cart carry?
Use the manufacturer rating as a ceiling and assume it means an evenly distributed load. Point loads and off-center loading reduce the usable figure substantially.
What cart material should I choose?
Plastic resists corrosion and chemicals and is easy to wash down. Steel takes more abuse and higher loads but can rust where the coating is chipped. Aluminum splits the difference at higher cost.
Do I need locking casters?
Yes for any cart loaded while parked, used on a slope, or working near a walkway. An unbraked loaded cart on a slight incline is a real struck-by hazard.
