ANSI Z87.1 Anti-Fog Bifocal Reader
EDITORIAL REVIEW: 4.5/5 — WC Safety Review of the 3M BX Reader, the secure-fit bifocal wraparound that sizes across a range of faces.
Editorial assessment by Steven Eaton, WC Safety editor, based on published 3M specifications and category fit. We did not laboratory-test this product.

The 3M BX Reader integrates reading magnification into a full ANSI Z87.1+ rated wraparound safety glass, serving industrial and construction workers who need impact protection and near-vision help in a single compliant pair. It uses a secure wraparound fit with adjustable temples and nosepiece that sizes across a range of face geometries, and an integrated bifocal segment in the lower lens — in Clear with +1.5, +2.0, and +2.5 diopter and Gray with +2.0, a practical alternative to custom prescription safety glasses for presbyopia.

Why the 3M BX Reader fits a range of faces

Readers on the job mean a constant swap — pull off the safety glasses, put on readers, work unprotected for a moment. The BX Reader ends that with a magnified bifocal segment built into a full Z87.1+ wraparound, and it goes further on fit: adjustable temples and nosepiece let one secure frame size across different faces, so a crew with varied head shapes can share the same model. Glance down to read, look up to work. Our full 3M BX Reader review rates it 4.5/5, and the safety glasses buyer's guide covers reader options for the jobsite.

Safety first: the BX Reader is impact-and-debris protection, not a sealed goggle — it is not rated against a chemical splash hazard, fine airborne dust, or vapor, which require sealed goggles or a face shield per your hazard assessment. The bifocal is a reading-magnification segment, not a full prescription — pick the diopter that matches your reading need and don't rely on it for distance correction. Choose eyewear against measured hazards with the when-do-you-need-safety-glasses guide.

What the listing documents

From the published specs: a full ANSI Z87.1+ wraparound polycarbonate safety glass with an integrated bifocal segment in the lower lens; a secure wraparound fit with adjustable temples and nosepiece that sizes across face geometries; Clear +1.5, +2.0, and +2.5 and Gray +2.0 diopters; base model 11374-00000-20. As 3m safety glasses go, the BX is the adjustable reader — a genuine bifocal reader safety glasses and a true reader safety glasses for presbyopia.

Choosing your BX Reader variant

Pick magnification and tint: Clear +1.5, +2.0, or +2.5 from the safety reading glasses collection for indoor close work, and Gray +2.0 for outdoor reading. For a plain clear safety lens without magnification, see the clear-lens collection, and for the outdoor tint decision the clear-vs-smoke lens guide. Because a reader lens fogs in humid work, the anti-fog guide and anti-fog collection cover fog-fighting options.

Where the BX Reader sits in the 3M line

The BX is 3M's adjustable-fit bifocal reader; the Nuvo Reader is the slim low-profile reader with the same diopter range, and the Solus 2000 is the anti-fog flagship that also offers a reader variant. Browse the full 3M safety glasses collection, and the best safety glasses 2026 roundup places the line against other brands.

Where it fits by job and crew orders

The bifocal and adjustable fit suit inspection, layout, and close-up plan or label work across a varied crew — the manufacturing, mechanics, and construction guides rank frames by task, and smaller-faced wearers should check the small-face guide and women's fit guide. Where the hazard exceeds impact — splash, dust, vapor — step to a sealed goggle from the safety goggles collection or the broader eye protection collection. For crew orders, quantity purchasing runs through a free Amazon Business account — volume pricing, PO numbers at checkout, and tax-exempt eligibility for qualifying organizations, with the walkthrough linked in our footer.

Reading the Z87 marking, and what it does not cover

Protective eyewear in the US is built to ANSI/ISEA Z87.1, and OSHA 1910.133 requires eye protection that meets it. The marking on the frame is the specification, and the important distinction is a single character: Z87 is basic impact, Z87+ is high impact — tested with a quarter-inch steel ball at 150 ft/s for spectacles. If the work throws anything, Z87+ is the line.

The suffixes narrow it further: D3 is splash and droplet, D4 dust, D5 fine dust. These matter because a spectacle cannot earn D3 — droplet protection needs a sealed goggle. Safety glasses are impact protection, not chemical splash protection, however wraparound the lens looks, and substituting one for the other is a common and consequential error.

A face shield is also secondary protection under 1910.133: it is worn over primary eye protection, never instead of it. And tint is not shade — a dark lens without a stated IR/UV shade number offers no rated protection against radiant energy.

Frequently asked questions

What is the 3M BX Reader?

A full ANSI Z87.1+ wraparound safety glass with an integrated bifocal reading segment in the lower lens, for workers who need impact protection and near-vision help in one compliant pair. It uses a secure wraparound fit with adjustable temples and nosepiece, in Clear +1.5/+2.0/+2.5 and Gray +2.0.

How does the bifocal segment work?

A magnified reading segment sits in the lower inner portion of the lens, so you glance down to read a label, gauge, or plan at close range, then look up through the clear main lens for normal work - all while keeping the Z87.1+ rating.

What makes the BX fit adjustable?

Its adjustable temples and nosepiece let the secure wraparound frame size across a range of face geometries, so it can be tuned to fit different wearers - useful when the same model needs to work for a varied crew.

How is the BX different from the Nuvo Reader?

Both are 3M bifocal-segment readers with the same diopter range; the BX emphasizes a secure, adjustable wraparound fit across face sizes, while the Nuvo uses a slimmer low-profile frame. Choose the BX for adjustable fit, the Nuvo for a slim profile.

Which magnification should I choose?

Match it to your reading need: +1.5 for mild, +2.0 for moderate, +2.5 for stronger close-up. Pick the diopter closest to your usual drugstore reader; Gray is offered at +2.0 for outdoor reading.

Is it a substitute for prescription safety glasses?

No - the bifocal is a reading-magnification segment, not a full custom prescription. It's a practical alternative to custom Rx safety glasses for presbyopia; a full distance or astigmatism correction needs prescription eyewear.

Is it ANSI Z87.1+ rated?

Yes - the BX Reader is a full ANSI Z87.1+ wraparound, so it meets the high-impact requirement for most industrial eye hazards while adding the reader segment.

Does the bifocal block my main view?

No - it occupies only the lower inner portion of the lens, leaving the main safety coverage clear. You look through the upper lens for general work and drop your eyes to the segment only for close reading.

Is it over-the-glasses (OTG)?

No - the BX replaces readers with a built-in bifocal rather than fitting over your own glasses. For wearing over existing frames, choose an OTG model.

Is it enough, or do I need goggles?

The BX Reader protects against impact and debris from the front and sides. It does not seal against a chemical splash hazard, fine dust, or vapor - those need sealed goggles or a face shield. Match the eyewear to your hazard assessment.

How do I care for the lenses?

Rinse grit before wiping and use a microfiber or lens-safe cloth; take care around the bifocal segment. Retire a lens once scratches enter your line of sight - a scratched safety or reader lens no longer performs fully.

How do I order for a crew?

Quantity purchasing runs through a free Amazon Business account - volume pricing, PO numbers at checkout, and tax-exempt eligibility for qualifying organizations. The bulk-ordering walkthrough is linked in our site footer.

Perfect for my aging eyes !!
I’m a 50 year old hygienist that needs readers but also safety glasses for work. This is the 3rd pair I’ve owned. Comfortable and lightweight. I have to use disinfectant on them so it starts etching the lenses after about 2-3 months. But in a non healthcare setting this would not be an issue if only cleaning with soap and water.

Good glasses for work.
I bought these for my husband for work. He really likes them. He really needed a 1.75, but the 1.50 has worked well for him. We went to several stores, and no one had them in stock. Good glasses for the price.

nose pad doesn't stay put
These are a great pair of safety glasses that nicely solve the problem for people like me who need readers for close-up work but whose distance vision is fine. They are comfortable, moderately stylish, and seem to adjust to a variety of heads/faces/tasks. My only complaint is the nose pad is press-fit on a pair of short posts and easily comes free. I have had to search for it on the floor of my workshop more than once. The good news is that even without the pad, the glasses are comfortable enough for long term wear. Still, a more secure fit for the nose pads would have gotten these a 5-star review.

Nose pads are easily lost.
The glasses are great and I especially like the bifocal feature. But, the silicon nose pads are extremely frustrating to use. They constantly fall off and get lost which somewhat renders the glasses useless. They should include a spare with each pair of glasses. I probably won’t be repurchasing these in the future.

Worth the money
Very comfortable and lightweight. As a clinician, I am required to read medications orders and bottles of medication. These glasses allow me to be safe and see all at the same time.

Great fit
Once you get used to using bifocals, these work great. The only thing that could make these better is if they had anti-fog. I use anti-fog lens wipes, and the glasses work great.

terrible safety glasses
I bought the 3M brand safety glasses because I thought they would be better quality and they're not. The corner of one lens and part of the frame broke off in less than a week so it would pop out when cleaning, they scratched easily especially the magnifying part, they're not fog resistant because the lenses are so huge they rest on my cheeks no matter how I adjusted them plus they make me look like a gecko. I kept these as spares and bought a different brand, do yourself a favor and don't buy these they are worthless.

One flaw
Overall a great pair of safety glasses. The one flaw is the nose bridge piece. While comfortable, it does not last as long as the lenses. Got 2-3 months of daily use before it no longer holds it shape nor stays on the glasses. No option to replace that I’ve found in 2 weeks of searching.

My second time buying these
I utilize these at my work at a local hospital. I have to admit I appreciate them for the most part, however they tend to slightly adjust on their own if I'm not paying attention. Meaning that they'll just on their own if you're using one of those string ties in the back to make sure they stay on your head. This is my second time purchasing a set of these I rather enjoy them.
