3M 9211+ N95 β€” what the grade means

The 3M 9211+ N95 is a NIOSH-approved N95 filtering facepiece. The letter is about oil, not efficiency β€” N is not oil-resistant, R is oil-resistant for one shift, P is oil-proof β€” and the number is filtration efficiency against the test aerosol.

Also listed as 3m aura, 9210, 3m aura n95 respirator, 3m aura mask, 3m aura n95, 3m aura 9205. Specifications below are read from the manufacturer record for this SKU.

Why the protection factor is 10, whatever the grade

Under OSHA 1910.134 Table 1 a filtering facepiece is a half-mask and carries an assigned protection factor of 10 β€” rated to ten times the permissible exposure limit and no further. A N95 does not buy a higher ceiling than an N95; it buys better filtration inside the same tenfold envelope. Above 10Γ— the limit you need a reusable half-mask or a full-face respirator at APF 50.

Buy it only if you can fit-test it

Safety note. A filtering facepiece filters air; it does not supply it. Never use one in an IDLH atmosphere, in an oxygen-deficient space, or against an unknown contaminant β€” those require supplied air or an SCBA. Within its limits, 1910.134(f) still requires fit testing before first use and annually, and facial hair crossing the sealing surface disqualifies a tight-fitting respirator: a correctly chosen N95 on a bearded face protects nobody.

Does the valve change the protection?

No. The exhalation valve vents warm, humid air, which makes long wear tolerable and reduces eyewear fogging. Filter, NIOSH rating and APF are unchanged. What it does change is direction: exhaled air leaves unfiltered, so a valved respirator gives no source control and is commonly excluded from sterile fields.

Put it on properly, and seal-check it every time

A user seal check is required before every use under 1910.134 Appendix B-1, and it is not the same thing as the annual fit test. Cup the facepiece in your hand with the straps hanging free, hold it against the face, and take the straps over the crown β€” never around the ears or over a hood. The lower strap sits below the ears, the upper strap high on the back of the head, and the nose clip is molded with two hands rather than pinched with one, which is the single most common error and the one that leaks.

Then check it. Positive check: cover the front with both hands and exhale gently β€” the facepiece should bulge slightly with no air escaping around the edge or the nose. Negative check: inhale sharply β€” it should collapse slightly toward the face and hold. Any leak means reseat and repeat; if it will not seal, the size or model is wrong for that face and no amount of strap tension fixes it. Facial hair on the sealing surface cannot be seal-checked away.

Buy if / skip if

  • Buy if your exposure is at or below 10Γ— the permissible limit, you can fit-test, and the contaminant matches the N95 grade.
  • Buy if you want a disposable you can issue by the box rather than maintain, clean and store.
  • Skip if oil mist is present and the grade starts with N β€” that is the common and expensive mistake.
  • Skip if anyone wearing it has facial hair on the sealing surface, or the exposure exceeds APF 10.
  • Skip if you need protection against a gas or vapour β€” a particulate filter does nothing for it.

Frequently asked questions

What does the N95 grade mean?

The letter is oil resistance β€” N is not oil-resistant, R lasts a single shift, P is oil-proof β€” and the number is filtration efficiency against the test aerosol.

What is the assigned protection factor?

Ten. OSHA 1910.134 Table 1 assigns any filtering facepiece an APF of 10, so it is rated to ten times the permissible exposure limit and no further, whatever the filter grade.

Do I need a fit test?

Yes, wherever a respirator is required. 1910.134(f) calls for fit testing before first use and at least annually, and facial hair on the sealing surface disqualifies it.

Does it protect against gases or vapours?

No. This is a particulate filter. Gases and vapours need cartridges on a reusable respirator, with a written change-out schedule.

Can I use it where oil mist is present?

Only if the grade starts with R or P. An N-series filter is not oil-resistant, and using one in an oil-mist atmosphere is the most common selection error.

How long can I wear it?

Until it is damaged, soiled, deformed, or breathing resistance rises noticeably β€” and it is discarded after use in any area where reuse is not permitted by the written program.

Is a higher number always better?

It filters better but does not raise the exposure ceiling. An N100 and an N95 share the same APF of 10; the difference is margin inside that envelope, not a higher limit.

Does the exhalation valve change protection?

No. The valve vents warm, humid air for comfort and fog control. Filter, rating and APF are unchanged β€” but exhaled air leaves unfiltered, so it gives no source control.

Is this the same as a KN95?

No. KN95 is a Chinese standard. This carries a NIOSH approval under 42 CFR Part 84, which is a different test and a different approval regime.

Can I wear it with glasses?

Yes, though fogging is the usual complaint. A valved model vents warm air and reduces it; the seal, not the lens, is what determines protection.

What replaces it when it is used up?

A disposable facepiece is discarded, not cleaned. If you are getting through boxes, price a reusable half-mask with replaceable filters against cost per shift.

Reliable brand, good and secure protection, easy to breathe, long-lasting
During the pandemic, I shopped around for a lot of masks. I really want to stick to 3M given their reputation in this market. Their masks provide good protection with published reliability data. Unfortunately, these weren't available during the worst of the pandemic, but I still like to use these today in crowded public areas or while traveling. The filter makes it a lot easier to breathe, so I can keep the mask on for hours at a time (I've traveled for 20 hours, only removing it 3-4 times for meals). The cord is also like braided cloth, so it's more sturdy than the rubber band material, which means it lasts longer. The prices fluctuate a lot for these masks, but given the longevity, I think $2.50-$3.00 per mask is reasonable.

Good quality mask with tricky fitting
Good quality mask but definitely recommend buying a single mask when possible to check fitting, as they were quite small for me. The straps are fairly soft, though do get painful on the upper ear with prolonged use as most masks do. Importantly the straps have not broken on any of my masks despite repeatedly taking them on & off and not being particularly ginger about it. The straple point on the mask where the straps attach can also scrape against the cheek, which can be uncomfortable, but with some adjustment this is fixed.

easy fit for anyone
The 3M Aura Particulate Respirator 9211+ is hands down one of the best N95 masks I’ve used. The individually wrapped design ensures each mask stays clean and ready for use, which is a huge plus for both convenience and hygiene. The three-panel design provides a secure, comfortable fit while allowing for easy breathing and speaking, making it great for long wear. The adjustable nose clip and soft inner lining add to the comfort and help achieve a proper seal. I also love that it folds flat, making it easy to carry and store. Whether for work, travel, or general protection, this pack of 10 respirators is a reliable, high-quality choice!

Very small and tight, valves may not work well
These masks and the straps are incredibly small and tight. It's weird. I have a child size head (wear child size hats), and most masks are a little big/loose on me. These are so tight it hurts--the top straps are painfully cutting into my ears (and both straps are so tight it feels like they're going to break when I put it on), and the mask is tight on my small face--squishing into my small nose. I do not understand this. These are supposedly "one size," and the box says "Standard Size" on it. I've tried a few of the masks, all have same issue.I also am not confident the valve is closing properly--I can breathe in (inhale) much easier than with any other N95 mask (including other valved 3M masks in a different model), which makes me wonder if air is getting in around the valve. So, I don't trust it to protect me. Very disappointed.[NOTE: I ordered these sold by amazon and was initially shipped a box that had been opened and returned (someone else's amazon receipt was INSIDE the 3M box, which had been taped up)!! Disturbing. Amazon said they couldn't replace the item (no idea why not), but did refund me for it so I could order again. But every time I went to reorder, the price would jump up ~$6-$10 over what I'd originally paid. I'd wait a while, see the price go down, and then it would jump before I could get the order placed. Annoying. After several days of this, I eventually gave up and got the masks elsewhere.]

Fit excellent but elastic straps can be an issue due to their relatively short length.
The mask itself fits well seals tightly but the only real issue is the length of the elastic straps being too short which make the mask uncomfortable after a short period of time. I didn’t see an option for a different size.Other than the item mentioned above everything else was great the breathing valve worked well reducing the heat associated with masks that don’t have this feature. I would definitely recommend as long as the size works for you.

The Only Mask I Use
These are the only masks I use. I'm immunocompromised so, when I'm in a situation where the risk of respiratory infection is high, I need a mask that will give me excellent protection. I've done a fit test with this mask and didn't smell or taste anything until the end of the test when I was told to loosen the mask and realized I had been breathing air that smelled and tasted horrible. When I'm in a situation where others are masking, I use the Aura without the valve, but when others are not masking (which is almost always the case these days), I find the Cool Flow Valve makes it a lot easier to breathe through the mask. I have sensitive skin and some masks give me a rash or are very irritating, but this mask doesn't bother me at all.

Elegant mask design, highly functional respirator, but too small with staples that can poke
Inexplicably small and tight-fitting, considering they are not marketed as being the "small" size within a range of sizes, these masks' elastic bands are either too short and/or not stretchable enough (notably the upper band). Also the staples that anchor the elastic bands are prone to poke the face. This all is too bad since the design of the mask per se is excellent, and the respirator is the best I ever used: in summer at least, I can wear these masks while wearing my glasses, without my glasses fogging at all. That is a first for me.

Easy breathing
If you need and or want an n95 mask, and you want to have the easiest breathing experience possible, I highly recommend this product. I have spent a lot of money on different masks, I've probably bought 30 different brands models and styles. In the n65 end of the world I have to say this is hands down the best mask I've had. The one way breathing Outlet makes it so much easier to breathe, and keeps your mask from getting filled with hot air and steaming up your glasses or just making you generally uncomfortable. The bands could be a little bit looser, but there are ways to adjust them and make them fit more easily. Overall I still give them a 10 out of 10 for being the easiest to breathe through. The only issue I had was shipping, it took forever.. but then again that is kind of understandable seeing how they are such great quality. I bought mine for my trip to Hawaii so that when I'm in my Tin Can for 20 hours I make sure that I don't get sick and waste half of my vacation. What will you use yours for?

Cooler than masks without vent
Best and safest Covid-19 masks available with vent. May not be permitted in certain health facilities due to exhaust vent however. Have used 3M model w/o vent for years safely. Vent model also has stronger head bands.
