3M 9205+ Aura N95 β€” what the grade means

The 3M 9205+ Aura N95 is a NIOSH-approved N95 filtering facepiece. The letter is about oil, not efficiency β€” N is not oil-resistant, R is oil-resistant for one shift, P is oil-proof β€” and the number is filtration efficiency against the test aerosol.

Also listed as 3m aura, 9210, 3m aura n95 respirator, 3m aura mask, 3m aura n95, 3m aura 9205. Specifications below are read from the manufacturer record for this SKU.

Why the protection factor is 10, whatever the grade

Under OSHA 1910.134 Table 1 a filtering facepiece is a half-mask and carries an assigned protection factor of 10 β€” rated to ten times the permissible exposure limit and no further. A N95 does not buy a higher ceiling than an N95; it buys better filtration inside the same tenfold envelope. Above 10Γ— the limit you need a reusable half-mask or a full-face respirator at APF 50.

Buy it only if you can fit-test it

Safety note. A filtering facepiece filters air; it does not supply it. Never use one in an IDLH atmosphere, in an oxygen-deficient space, or against an unknown contaminant β€” those require supplied air or an SCBA. Within its limits, 1910.134(f) still requires fit testing before first use and annually, and facial hair crossing the sealing surface disqualifies a tight-fitting respirator: a correctly chosen N95 on a bearded face protects nobody.

Put it on properly, and seal-check it every time

A user seal check is required before every use under 1910.134 Appendix B-1, and it is not the same thing as the annual fit test. Cup the facepiece in your hand with the straps hanging free, hold it against the face, and take the straps over the crown β€” never around the ears or over a hood. The lower strap sits below the ears, the upper strap high on the back of the head, and the nose clip is molded with two hands rather than pinched with one, which is the single most common error and the one that leaks.

Then check it. Positive check: cover the front with both hands and exhale gently β€” the facepiece should bulge slightly with no air escaping around the edge or the nose. Negative check: inhale sharply β€” it should collapse slightly toward the face and hold. Any leak means reseat and repeat; if it will not seal, the size or model is wrong for that face and no amount of strap tension fixes it. Facial hair on the sealing surface cannot be seal-checked away.

Buy if / skip if

  • Buy if your exposure is at or below 10Γ— the permissible limit, you can fit-test, and the contaminant matches the N95 grade.
  • Buy if you want a disposable you can issue by the box rather than maintain, clean and store.
  • Skip if oil mist is present and the grade starts with N β€” that is the common and expensive mistake.
  • Skip if anyone wearing it has facial hair on the sealing surface, or the exposure exceeds APF 10.
  • Skip if you need protection against a gas or vapour β€” a particulate filter does nothing for it.

Frequently asked questions

What does the N95 grade mean?

The letter is oil resistance β€” N is not oil-resistant, R lasts a single shift, P is oil-proof β€” and the number is filtration efficiency against the test aerosol.

What is the assigned protection factor?

Ten. OSHA 1910.134 Table 1 assigns any filtering facepiece an APF of 10, so it is rated to ten times the permissible exposure limit and no further, whatever the filter grade.

Do I need a fit test?

Yes, wherever a respirator is required. 1910.134(f) calls for fit testing before first use and at least annually, and facial hair on the sealing surface disqualifies it.

Does it protect against gases or vapours?

No. This is a particulate filter. Gases and vapours need cartridges on a reusable respirator, with a written change-out schedule.

Can I use it where oil mist is present?

Only if the grade starts with R or P. An N-series filter is not oil-resistant, and using one in an oil-mist atmosphere is the most common selection error.

How long can I wear it?

Until it is damaged, soiled, deformed, or breathing resistance rises noticeably β€” and it is discarded after use in any area where reuse is not permitted by the written program.

Is a higher number always better?

It filters better but does not raise the exposure ceiling. An N100 and an N95 share the same APF of 10; the difference is margin inside that envelope, not a higher limit.

Why does this model have no valve?

An unvalved facepiece filters exhaled air as well as inhaled, which is what makes it usable where source control matters. It runs warmer over a long shift.

Is this the same as a KN95?

No. KN95 is a Chinese standard. This carries a NIOSH approval under 42 CFR Part 84, which is a different test and a different approval regime.

Can I wear it with glasses?

Yes, though fogging is the usual complaint. A valved model vents warm air and reduces it; the seal, not the lens, is what determines protection.

What replaces it when it is used up?

A disposable facepiece is discarded, not cleaned. If you are getting through boxes, price a reusable half-mask with replaceable filters against cost per shift.

Best Fit Yet!
Not a fan of wearing masks but who is!I've been wearing ear loop masks and they really bother my large but lovely ears. Specifically, the area that bothers me is the furrow between the helix or outer portion of the ear and my head (the area where eyeglass temples rest on my head). Traditional earloop mask loops tug on that area which generally bothers me. I am a lifelong eyeglass wearer so I am used to having a "foreign object" touch that area. I say that as not to appear too sensitive to the idea of having loops around my ears. Some people don't mind and some do. I do - so earloop masks are not for me. Having tried numerous masks over the last couple of years starting with two band around the head types and ear loop types, I have concluded that for me (a bald guy who wears glasses and has large lovely ears), the two banded around the head type work best even though I have to remove my glasses to put the mask on and take it off otherwise I risk flailing my glasses off my head when removing the mask.Regarding the head loops themselves, they are elastic much like thin pliable rubber bands and are stapled to each side of the mask with industrial staples. I think the odd smell of the masks when first used may be attributed to the bands. These are single use masks but I can't see throwing them away after only one use or even one day's use so I usually wear one mask for a few days. After all, I am not an ER doctor or work in a Operating Room so true single use is relative. There are studies that suggest that bacteria can form on the inside of a mask but studies are inconclusive regarding the amount of bacteria that accumulates if used once or multiple times. Having said that, I wouldn't use a mask for more than a few days. Sweat, normal breathing, and coughing all contribute to reasons you need to dispose of a used masks and use a new one regularly. I was able to get two full days of use before one of the bands broke. Admittedly, I took the mask off and put it back on several times each day. And I adjusted the bands repeatedly to get a good fit so I am not disuaded by the fact that the one band only lasted two days. I was about to "retire" that mask anyway.3M says you can use this mask up to 25 times based on wear, damage, etc.Last comment about using two banded versus earloop masks - I shave my head so I am comfortable with bands around my head. People with any amount of hair may be bothered by bands tangling their hair. My wife and children all have lovely manes and they DO NOT like two banded masks. Now as for fit besides the loops. Best facial comfort for any mask I've ever used. These masks come with a foam pad about 5" long that is affixed to the top of the inner side of the mask. This ensures a tight fit and reduces eyeglass fogging. Fogging is not eliminated but reduced.A note about men with beards or goaties as is my case. The mask fits over my goatie completely and that contributes to the tight fit. But my beard does get "damp" which isn't fun but oh well, when you need to wear a mask then go all in.Remember, N95 masks use head loops to ensure a tight fit. KN95 masks offer either head loops or ear loops. If they have ear loops, they are not N95 masks. Do I really need an actual N95 respirator? No, not really. I could get KN95s with head loops but I'm really digging these 3M masks.Summary:Great for bald heads.Best facial fit ever.Quality components that lasts for as long as intended.Final comment: They are Made In The USA (with globally sourced materials).

ER-Approved N95 – Comfortable, Secure, and Reliable for Long Shifts
These are our go-to N95 masks in a fast-paced emergency room setting where exposure risk is constant and unpredictable. In the ER, standard blue 3-layer disposable masks are not sufficient for the level of protection we need with frequent patient turnover, aerosol-generating situations, and unknown exposures. The 3M Aura 9205+ is extremely comfortable even during long ER shifts. It provides an excellent seal around the nose and face without causing pressure marks or irritation, which is crucial when wearing an N95 for hours at a time. The adjustable design allows for a secure, customized fit and significantly reduces fogging when wearing goggles, face shields, or glasses during patient care.Breathability is a major plus in high-stress, high-movement environments like the ER. These masks do not trap the scent of your breath, even after extended wear, making them far more tolerable during back-to-back patients and busy shifts. The flat-fold design is lightweight, durable, and holds its shape throughout the day. We’ve tried multiple N95 brands in emergency settings, and none compare to the comfort, fit, and protection of the 3M Aura. With the variety of exposures ER Healthcare workers face daily, this is the only brand we trust and continue to use.If you work in the ER or any high-risk healthcare environment and need dependable, hospital-grade protection, these should absolutely be your go-to N95s.

Protective Breathable Mask
I bought these masks to protect against this cold and flu season. These are light weight and breathable. They have an excellent seal. In my experience with wearing masks, this is the best for comfortable breathing. The only con is that the elastic is tight. Some may find it too uncomfortable. A good seal is important for me therefore, I do not mind the snug fit. I do recommend this product.

Good comfortable/effective individually wrapped mask at a reasonable price point.
Great deal. I use these for yard work such as mowing or raking leaves. I also use them when working in the crawlspace. They are comfortable even after all day wear. I only noticed shortness of breath if I'm doing something strenuous like hauling bags of leaves. There's definitely a relief feeling once removing the mask--as would be expected. The straps are not super tight and the nose bridge is comfortable with the foam. I feel like there is a solid seal when wearing--no leaking or gaps. I have noticed that once I take off the mask at the end of use the straps will snap pretty easy with a swift tug. So if you're taking the mask on and off this might not be the one for you. I like how they come individually wrapped. makes it easy to keep them clean once the initial box is opened. I do notice a pretty strong synthetic smell once they are out of the wrapper. I usually fan it a couple times to get the odor to disperse. I would say these work well, I don't have the symptoms/allergies I would usually experience working in the environments without a mask.

Great Product, Just Handle the Elastic with Care!
I bought this product to help protect myself from airborne allergies, and it’s been working wonderfully. The fit is comfortable and secure, and the material feels soft yet durable. It provides excellent coverage without feeling too tight or making it hard to breathe, which is something I really appreciate.I use it regularly, especially when I’m outdoors or cleaning, and I’ve noticed a big difference, my allergies are much more manageable now. The only thing to be careful about is the elastic strap; it can break if pulled too hard or stretched too much. As long as you handle it gently, it should last a long time.Overall, I’m very happy with this purchase and would definitely recommend it to anyone dealing with allergies or looking for extra protection from airborne particles.

Happy buyer
I used them when I clean my backyard or clean my bird feeder and water source bird bath. I don't have any sicknesses or energies but recently twice I felt after the job my throat is soar I took a shower quickly and felt better so my son suggested these I wore them twice and I was fine all the time, I guess they worked, right!?

Terribly stinky, but work OK I guess.
I purchased these to wear for protection when a basic mask won't cut it, and they seem to work alright but I do have one complaint: they smell HORRIBLE when you first unwrap them and put them on. I mean they smell exactly like a tire store. I'm guessing it's the foam rubber strip at the nose. But the smell wears off quickly, or maybe you just don't smell it once they're sealed properly on the face. The fit is pretty good, but even when carefully following the directions it's extremely hard for me to get them properly seated with no leakage (I use fog on my glasses to determine whether they're sealed). I do appreciate that these stay put very well, and I've worn them for hours at a time without the straps slipping off. Another plus is that the shape naturally creates a ledge that holds up glasses, which is AMAZING when you're hands are dirty and you don't want to be pushing your glasses back on all day.

Comfortable
Comfortable. Does not irritate ears since you place it around your head, can use one elastic band or both, breathable doesn't lay against your lips.
