Howard Leight TrustFit Pod Earplugs, NRR 28 Cordless Push-In (Reusable) Overview

The Howard Leight TrustFit Pod earplugs (TFP-1) are a cordless, push-in foam plug rated NRR 28 in the US that bridges foam attenuation with clean, no-roll handling. Under OSHA 1910.95, hearing protection is required when noise reaches an 8-hour time-weighted average of 85 dBA, and a well-inserted plug like this is a practical first line of defense.

As push-in foam earplugs, the design is the draw: instead of rolling foam down, you hold an ergonomic stem and push a soft dimpled foam pod into the canal. These no-roll earplugs insert faster, keep the foam tip cleaner because you never touch it, and can be fitted with gloves on. And as reusable earplugs they last up to about a work-week when washed and stored properly, cutting waste versus single-use foam.

Like any item in hearing protection, match the plug to your measured noise exposure and to how you work. As uncorded plugs the Howard Leight TFP-1 avoids a cord that could snag; the TrustFit Pod is also sold corded. This TrustFit Pod NRR 28 plug compares against foam and other reusable options; browse cordless ear plugs before ordering.

What These TrustFit Pod Earplugs Are Built For

Use case Fit Buyer guidance
Gloved insertion / dirty hands Purpose-built The stem lets you insert without touching the foam tip or removing gloves.
In-and-out of noise zones Strong No-roll push-in is quick each time you re-enter noise.
Several days of reuse / lower waste Strong Washable and reusable for about a work-week before replacement.
Snag-risk areas (moving equipment) Good Uncorded avoids a cord catching; choose the corded TrustFit Pod to avoid drops.
Highest attenuation for extreme noise Consider foam NRR 28 is solid; a well-fitted roll-down foam plug can rate higher.

Hearing protection only works when it fits. The labeled NRR is a laboratory value that overstates real-world attenuation, so OSHA and NIOSH recommend derating it β€” a common method subtracts 7 from the NRR and halves the remainder when estimating protection against a time-weighted average exposure. Wear hearing protection whenever noise reaches an 8-hour TWA of 85 dBA under OSHA 1910.95, push the pod in by its stem until it seals, wash the plug with mild soap and water only, inspect the foam tip, replace it after about a work-week or if it hardens or tears, and use dual protection (plugs plus muffs) only per your safety program for very high noise. Learn more in what NRR means and foam vs reusable ear plugs.

Pros & Cons

Pros
  • NRR 28 in a quick, clean push-in foam pod
  • No-roll design with an ergonomic stem β€” glove-friendly insertion
  • Foam tip stays cleaner because you hold the stem, not the tip
  • Reusable for about a work-week when washed and stored
  • Uncorded to avoid snags (corded version also available)
Cons
  • NRR 28 is lower than a well-fitted roll-down foam plug
  • Needs washing and replacement after about 5 days
  • Uncorded β€” easier to drop than the corded version
  • Field attenuation depends on a full, correct seal

How It Compares

The TrustFit Pod is a reusable, no-roll push-in foam plug. Weigh it against the alternatives before ordering:

Option Insertion NRR Best for
TrustFit Pod TFP-1 (this page) Push-in stem, no-roll, reusable 28 Gloved, clean, several-day reuse
Disposable roll-down foam Roll and insert, single-use 30-33 Highest attenuation per plug
Flanged reusable earplug Push-in flanges, reusable Varies Longer reuse and a firmer feel

Choose the TrustFit Pod for clean, gloved, several-day reuse, a roll-down foam plug for the highest NRR, or a flanged reusable earplug for longer reuse. Compare in our disposable vs reusable ear plugs guide and the wider hearing protection range.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the NRR of the Howard Leight TrustFit Pod?

The TrustFit Pod TFP-1 is rated NRR 28 in the US. That is strong attenuation for a push-in foam plug. NRR is a laboratory value, so derate it for real-world use rather than assuming full protection. It suits most industrial noise when inserted correctly.

Is the TrustFit Pod corded or uncorded?

This TFP-1 listing is the uncorded (cordless) version. Howard Leight also sells the TrustFit Pod corded for applications where a neck cord helps prevent dropping. Choose uncorded where a cord could snag on moving equipment.

Is the TrustFit Pod reusable?

Yes. It is reusable for up to about a work-week - roughly 5 days - when cared for. Wash it with mild soap and warm water, pat it dry, and store it in a protected area. Replace it after about 5 days, or sooner if the foam tip is damaged or hardened.

How is a push-in pod different from roll-down foam?

You do not roll it down. A soft dimpled foam pod on an ergonomic stem collapses and pushes gently into the canal. That is faster, keeps the foam tip cleaner because you hold the stem, and can be done with gloves on, unlike rolling a foam plug between fingers.

Can I insert it while wearing gloves?

Yes. The stem fits naturally between finger and thumb even with work gloves on, so you can insert and remove the plug without taking gloves off and without touching the foam tip that enters the ear.

How do I insert the TrustFit Pod correctly?

Hold the stem, reach over your head to pull the ear up and back, and push the foam pod gently into the canal until it seals. Do not force it. If you can still hear normally, push a little further or reseat it. Let the foam expand to fill the canal.

How do I clean and store it?

Wash with mild soap and warm water only - do not use chemicals, disinfectants, or solvents on the foam - pat dry, and store in a protected area or its case. Inspect the foam tip for damage or hardening and replace the plug after about a work-week of use.

How does it compare with a disposable foam plug?

A disposable foam plug can rate a bit higher on NRR but must be rolled and fully inserted each time and is single-use. The TrustFit Pod is quicker and cleaner to insert, reusable for several days, and glove-friendly, trading a little rated attenuation for convenience.

How should I apply the NRR to real noise levels?

OSHA and NIOSH recommend derating the labeled NRR because lab conditions overstate field performance. A common OSHA method subtracts 7 from the NRR and halves the remainder when estimating protection against a time-weighted average exposure. Follow your safety program's method.

When is hearing protection required?

OSHA requires hearing protection when noise reaches or exceeds an 8-hour time-weighted average of 85 dBA under 1910.95. If you must raise your voice to be heard at arm's length, noise is likely high enough to warrant protection. See our guide on when hearing protection is needed.

Can I use it with earmuffs for very loud work?

Yes. Dual protection - earplugs plus earmuffs - is used for very high noise, but the combined NRR is not the sum of the two. Add about 5 dB to the higher of the two device ratings as a rule of thumb, and follow your safety program for dual-protection thresholds.

How are the TrustFit Pod earplugs packaged?

The TrustFit Pod is commonly sold in boxes of 100 pairs and in dispenser formats for stocking a crew or workplace. Check the packaging for the exact count and choose the pack that matches how you issue and replace plugs.

Much easier than regular foam plugs to use !!!
I do a lot of Target shooting, so there's a lot of nose exposure of large caliber guns. These WORK EXTREMELY WELL. Very easy to get in and out of your ears, unlike normal foam plugs you rollup and can't push into your ear canal and easily come back out, these don't. These are awesome, just grab the flat side twist and push into your ear and can be used numerous times. I've electronic ones, that work well, but are bulky. PERSONALLY, I THINK THESE WORK BETTER, than the electronic. I RECOMMEND THESE OVER THE ELECTRONIC TYPE for price and ease of use

Hard to put in-but good
These look cool. Bright colors. Sturdy. They are definitely reusable, keep their supple feeling and shape. Quite challenging to put in, or insert though! At a suggestion I wet them with saliva, tried twisting them as well still rough going in. Compressing the foam helped. Multiple attempts sometimes needed. But when they are in they block noise excellently, and completely kept water from going in my ears when dunking underwater in my pool. Challenge to insert, but great otherwise. They kept fresh for reusing for DAYS unprotected

They're not cheap but they are worth the cost. I have some pairs I have reused like 50 times. To insert them I just push and twist. Don't roll them up. Hope they keep manufacturing these

Works with gloves!
1 - Handles and inserts great while wearing loose leather gloves.2 - No need to roll and compress prior to inserting3 - If you only have one hand, no problem. Single hand installation to both ears.4 - Insert with dirty hands, you don't need to touch the foam portion that goes in the ear.-1 - These don't stay seated as well as the Laser Lites, but they block sound just as well when seated properly.

Great Earplug!!!
These are super quick and easy to install, attenuate very well, stay in and one can insert and remove without touching the plug which is great when hands are dirty.I also sleep in these. I turn the stem to be more in line with my head and they stay in for hours even though I sleep in my side.I use them with the lawn equipment, at my desk at work and anywhere there is loud, annoying or distracting sound.Being so quick and easy to install, they are great for the office where I often need to insert and remove quickly as distractions start or the phone rings, etc.

Effective and reusable!
I use different types of hearing protection and found that these reusable ear plugs work well. The older style of foam plugs require that they be rolled up tightly, then pushed into the ear canal, and then held in place until they expand to fill the ear canal - time consuming and often hit-or-miss and requiring a re-rolling and re-insertion to be effective (with dirty hands, the ear canal can become β€œcontaminated”). These plugs have a β€œhandle” that keeps the foam away from your fingers and allows easy insertion and removal so that they can be reused with no worry about contamination.

Great for motorcycling and noise reduction
I find if you wet these down a bit. put them in your mouth to get them wet and then stick the into your ears about as far as you can push them. they cancel the noise really really really well. I have a pair of special molded to my ear ear plugs and these work just as well when you wet them before putting them in.

Great ear plugs!
These are great earplugs! They push in and remove pretty easily. The plugs deaden the sound of my angle grinder enough that I don't need additional protection. They can also be reused a few times. Considering the cost, that’s a great feature. The box also doubles as a dispenser.

Laser Lites are a better plug
I tried these and they were hit and miss attempting to get a good seal. I like the concept, but they do not fit as good as the Laser Lites (Same Brand). I will stick with the Corded Laser Lights. I own a a shooting range and do extensive tractor work.
