EDITORIAL REVIEW: 4.7/5 WC Safety Review — 3M 6006 Multi Gas and Vapor Respirator Cartridge

Best For: Mixed or unknown gas exposures with no significant dust — organic vapor, acid gas, ammonia, methylamine, and formaldehyde in a single cartridge, on a 3M bayonet half- or full-face respirator.

Not For: Dust or particulate (no filter built in), carbon monoxide, oxygen deficiency, or IDLH conditions — and overkill if you face only one gas family.

Bottom Line: The 6006 is the broadest gas-only cartridge 3M makes, ideal when several gas families are in play at once. If dust is also in the air, step up to the 3M 60926, which builds in P100.

3M 6006 Overview

The 3M 6006 is a NIOSH-approved multi-gas and vapor respirator cartridge for 3M bayonet respirators that protects against organic vapor, acid gas, ammonia, methylamine, and formaldehyde in one cartridge. It twist-locks onto 3M reusable half masks and full facepieces and is the broadest gas-only option 3M offers. Buy the 6006 when your air carries more than one gas family — or when the exact mix is uncertain — and there is no significant dust to filter.

It is a gas/vapor cartridge only — it has no particulate filter. If dust, mist, or fume is also present, pair it with a 3M 5N11 or 5P71 prefilter and a 501 retainer, or choose the all-in-one 3M 60926 (multi-gas + P100). To confirm the right class for your hazard, use the how to choose a respirator cartridge guide, the 3M filter & cartridge guide, and the cartridge color chart, or browse the multi-gas cartridges collection.

Where the 3M 6006 Fits in Respirator Selection

The 6006 is a multi-class gas cartridge — reach for it when several gas families are present, or when the exposure is mixed and you want one cartridge to cover the range. Confirm your hazards through an industrial-hygiene assessment, since a single-gas cartridge is cheaper when only one family is involved.

Who Should Buy the 3M 6006?

Buy the 6006 if your air carries several gas families at once — or an uncertain mix of organic vapor, acid gas, ammonia, methylamine, or formaldehyde — and there is no significant dust. It suits chemical handlers, lab staff, maintenance crews, and operators who would otherwise stock several single-class cartridges.

What Does the 3M 6006 Protect Against?

Hazard 6006 Fit Buyer Guidance
Organic vapor ✅ Yes Covered alongside the other four gas families
Acid gas ✅ Yes Chlorine, hydrogen chloride, sulfur dioxide and similar
Ammonia & methylamine ✅ Yes Same range as the dedicated 6004
Formaldehyde ✅ Yes Same range as the dedicated 6005
Any gas + dust ◐ Add prefilter Pair with 5N11/5P71, or use the 60926 (P100 built in)

What the 3M 6006 Does NOT Protect Against

  • Dust / particulate (no filter)
  • Mists & fumes (no filter)
  • Carbon monoxide
  • Oxygen deficiency
  • Unknown atmospheres at IDLH
  • IDLH conditions

Safety: The 3M 6006 is rated for gas and vapor only — organic vapor, acid gas, ammonia, methylamine, and formaldehyde. It has no particulate filter, does not protect against carbon monoxide, and no cartridge adds oxygen. Oxygen-deficient, unknown, and IDLH atmospheres require supplied air, SCBA, or another solution specified by a qualified safety professional. Where dust is also present, add a 5N11 prefilter or use the 3M 60926.

Best Applications for the 3M 6006

Mixed Chemical Handling

The 6006 is built for processes where more than one gas family is in the air — solvent vapors alongside acid gas, or ammonia near a formaldehyde source — and one cartridge covers the range. Confirm concentrations against your program; if levels approach IDLH, use supplied air instead. Browse the multi-gas cartridges collection for the full lineup.

Unknown or Variable Exposures

When the exact mix shifts from task to task, the 6006 saves you from swapping single-class cartridges and reduces the risk of fitting the wrong one. If particulate is also variable, add a prefilter or move to the 60926; the color chart helps you confirm the band.

Maintenance & Lab Work

Maintenance crews and lab staff who touch many chemicals favor the 6006 because one part number covers organic vapor, acid gas, ammonia, methylamine, and formaldehyde. If a single hazard dominates day to day, a matched cartridge from the combination cartridges collection may cost less.

3M 6006 Pros & Cons

Pros Cons
Broadest gas-only coverage 3M makes — five gas families in one No particulate filter — needs a prefilter for dust
Simplifies stocking for mixed or unknown exposures Overkill — and pricier — if you face only one gas
Standard 3M bayonet fit on half and full facepieces For dust + gases, the 60926 is simpler

Compatible 3M Respirators

The 3M 6006 uses the standard 3M bayonet connection and mounts to 3M reusable half masks and full facepieces:

Respirator Type Compatible?
3M 6000 Half Mask Half mask
3M 6500QL Half Mask Half mask
3M 7500 Half Mask Half mask
3M 6000 Full Face Full face
3M 7800S Full Face Full face
3M Ultimate FX FF-400 Full face

Standard 3M bayonet connection. Does not fit Honeywell North, Moldex, MSA, GVS, or 3M Secure Click respirators. For particulate, add a 5N11/5P71 prefilter with the 501 retainer.

3M 6006 vs Other 3M Gas Cartridges

Cartridge Protection Choose If
3M 6006 OV / acid gas / ammonia / methylamine / formaldehyde (gas only) Several gases or unknown mix, no dust
3M 60926 Multi-gas + P100 Several gases plus dust
3M 6001 Organic vapor (gas only) Solvent vapor is your only hazard
3M 6003 Organic vapor + acid gas (gas only) Only OV and acid gas, nothing else
3M 6005 Formaldehyde / organic vapor (gas only) Formaldehyde is the main hazard

3M 6006 vs 60926

Both cover the same five gas families; the difference is the particulate filter. The 6006 is gas-only, so if dust is present you must add a prefilter. The 3M 60926 builds a P100 filter into the same multi-gas cartridge. Buy the 6006 for clean, dust-free multi-gas environments at the lower cost. Buy the 60926 when dust or mist is also in the air and you want one-piece gas-plus-particulate protection.

3M 6006 vs 6003

The 3M 6003 covers organic vapor and acid gas only; the 6006 adds ammonia, methylamine, and formaldehyde on top. Buy the 6003 when your hazard is strictly OV plus acid gas — it is cheaper and purpose-built for that pair. Buy the 6006 when ammonia, methylamine, or formaldehyde is also in the mix, or when the exposure is uncertain and you want full gas-family coverage in one cartridge.

3M 6006 Frequently Asked Questions

What is the 3M 6006 used for?

The 6006 is used for mixed or unknown gas exposures — organic vapor, acid gas, ammonia, methylamine, and formaldehyde — on 3M bayonet respirators, where there is no significant dust to filter.

What gases does the 3M 6006 protect against?

Organic vapor, acid gas, ammonia, methylamine, and formaldehyde. It is the broadest gas-only cartridge 3M makes, covering all five families in one part.

Does the 3M 6006 have a particulate filter?

No. The 6006 is a gas/vapor cartridge only. For dust, add a 3M 5N11 or 5P71 prefilter with a 501 retainer, or use the 3M 60926, which includes P100.

What respirators does the 3M 6006 fit?

It fits 3M bayonet respirators: the 6000, 6500QL, and 7500 half masks and the 6000, 7800S, and Ultimate FX FF-400 full facepieces. It does not fit Honeywell North, Moldex, MSA, GVS, or 3M Secure Click.

What is the difference between the 3M 6006 and 60926?

Both cover the same five gas families. The 60926 adds a built-in P100 filter for dust; the 6006 is gas-only and needs a separate prefilter if particulate is present.

Should I buy the 3M 6006 or a single-gas cartridge?

Buy the 6006 when several gases are present or the mix is uncertain. If only one gas family applies, a single-class cartridge such as the 6001, 6002, 6003, or 6005 is cheaper and purpose-built.

Does the 3M 6006 protect against carbon monoxide?

No. No air-purifying cartridge protects against carbon monoxide. CO exposure requires supplied air or a specialized system specified by a safety professional.

Can I use the 3M 6006 for formaldehyde?

Yes. Formaldehyde is one of the five gas families the 6006 covers. If formaldehyde is your only hazard, the dedicated 3M 6005 may cost less.

Does the 3M 6006 protect against ammonia?

Yes. Ammonia and methylamine are both within the 6006's rated coverage, the same range as the dedicated 3M 6004 cartridge.

How many 3M 6006 cartridges do I need?

3M bayonet cartridges install as a pair, one on each side of the facepiece. Confirm the exact pack quantity on the current listing before ordering, as packaging can vary.

When should I replace the 3M 6006?

Replace it on your employer's change-out schedule, or sooner if you detect odor, taste, or irritation, breathing becomes difficult, or the cartridge is damaged.

Is the 3M 6006 good for unknown chemical exposures below IDLH?

It is a strong choice when the gases are uncertain but within its five families and the atmosphere is not IDLH and not oxygen-deficient. For unknown atmospheres that may be IDLH, use supplied air or SCBA.

3M takes the cake like usual
I purchased this set of respirator filters because I still do film photography work in a darkroom. With that being said, I work with some rather harmful chemicals: selenium, acids, alkali, and harmful components like strong bleaches and formaldehyde containing products. To keep it short, if these enter your airway or eyes, they can spell chaos and a visit to your friendly neighborhood E.R.Inside the box was a small, neat paper bag for protection and labeling of the filters. It contained the standard product information, warnings, safety risks and other pertinent information. Noted was situations in which use of this product would not be okay and what it would work well for. That is: organic vapors, chlorine, hydrogen chloride, sulfur dioxide, chlorine dioxide or hydrogen sulphide, ammonia/methylamine, formaldehyde or hydrogen fluoride. The safety leaflet inside repeats all of this while defining all appropriate exposure limits to hundreds of chemicals. They are also NIOSH approved for assured safety. The filters themselves appear pretty standard, a grey casing with a gold label for identification. A slight downfall was that they were a little heavier than previous filters I had tried, coming in about 5 ounces a piece - so 10 ounces for both plus the weight of the mask. It certainly did not bother me any and I was still able to be comfortable while using them.Performance was excellent. I did a standard respiration test using careful lab safety just in case of a defect. I began a fume test with absolutely no detection of odor or leakage. As I slowly increased concentration to the maximum acceptable exposure limits, I still could not detect any presence of my chemicals which as mentioned, burn the airway without sufficient protection. I cannot say the same for other filters. There is no hard specified replacement schedule included with the filters. The information leaflet simply states to "Replace with an established change schedule or earlier when smell, taste, or irritation is noticed." That certainly could create a safety hazard for an average Joe working with dangerous chemicals. A good rule a thumb is to replace filters every 60 hours of usage or 3 months (whichever is soonest) under average usage and concentration. If using less harmful chemicals, the odor/taste test would be sufficient. All in all, when used as directed in accordance with products these filters are designed to fit, they go above and beyond expectations. Highly recommended.

Versatile protection!
This is a great multi-purpose pair of filters that filter practically all gasses/vapors you could encounter at home or on the work floor (except mercury vapor). Compared to the other 3M cartridges (such as the black organic vapor ones), these filter more chemicals for practically the same price, so go figure.I use them mostly for filtering bleach (chlorine) vapors while cleaning, but also for the occasional spraying of pesticides. I plan on using them more in the future for paint jobs and dirty cleanup work after we get our first puppy! Please note that these cartridges alone are not intended to filter out particles or aerosol. So for (saw)dust, mold or asbestos removal, spray painting or spraying pesticides etc. you would need to add a (removable) prefilter, or get the version with the magenta P100 particulate filter permanently attached (3M 60926 Multi-Gas, Vapor Cartridge, P100). For the cheap 5N11 (not resistant to oil) or 5P71 (oil proof) prefilters you would need the 3M 501 filter retainer/adapter. Or you can use the 3M 502 filter adapter to attach any of the circular pancake (series 2000) filters such as the 3M 2091 P100 or the waterproof 3M 7093 P100 filters.I personally prefer this last setup (adding the 7093 P100 filter with the 502 adapter), as this offers the most flexibility: both the chemical cartridge and the particulate filter can still be used separately if only one form of protection (vapor or dust/aerosol) is needed (making breathing easier), and the 7093 is more splash resistant and offers more protection (99.97% vs 95%) compared to the 5N11 or 5P71 pads. For spray painting, however, the 5P71 pads also seem like a good solution as they are much cheaper to replace once saturated.Overall, highly recommended! Especially once you get some prefilters for extra versatility.

Works really well and the peace of mind is invaluable!
I've been buying these respirator cartridges from 3M for years.I'm a professional woodworker and fabricator. I'm around harsh and dangerous chemicals and finishes every week.Knowing I have a fresh pair of these cartridges ready to go when I start to spray something nasty gives me a lot of piece of mind.Don't mess with your lungs. Always use a respirator with good cartridge's.Also, remember these cartridge's need to be kept in a air tight container or they will lose their ability to filter out the harmful vapors. You can take the cartridges off your mask fairly easily and put them in a baggy or container to keep the air out. This keeps the activated carbon lasting longer.I put my whole mask, with the cartridges still attached, into a gallon sized zip lock baggy when I'm not using it.That being said, these still need to be replaced after you've used them for days or weeks. Once the activated carbon has filled up with all the bad vapors they won't work as well, or at all.You really shouldn't be able to smell any type of chemical smell if you have good cartridges and a good seal on your mask. It's a necessary evil, but your health is worth it. Especially if you're using harmful chemicals or finishes regularly.

IMPORTANT - IMPORTANT - IMPORTANT: Date on filter is date of manufacture!
People are confused. There is indeed a problem if the date on the package and the date on the filters are both the expiration date. But, they are not. As you can see from my picture, I have noted that the package date is the expiration date, and the filter date is the date of manufacture.I called 3M technical support this morning and verified this.I had to call, because nowhere could I find any confirmation regarding what the date on the actual filters really stood for. Yes, to the left there is "Fab" which I could assume means date of Fabrication, but again, I couldn't find any information anywhere to verify this. While I have just used these cartridges to do some spray painting, and they work perfectly well, I am removing one star for two reasons. First, the confusion surrounding the different dates. I told the 3M rep about this, that what the dates specify should be clearer. Secondly, my filters came in a package with pinholes in it. I could literally feel air going in and out of the holes as I squeezed the package. When I spoke to the rep I was told that if the filters were to be stored for a while, then yes, those holes would be a problem. But, if the filters had been recently manufactured (mine were) and I was going to use them now, the exposure to outside air wasn't an issue.Hopefully my review is helpful and eliminates the confusion that other reviews are creating.

3M Respirator Cartridge 6006 - very effective
I work with fiberglass and epoxies and some other nasty smelling chem concoctions on occasion. They span from irritating to down right nasty and breathing them can send my heard spinning with dizziness or even headaches. After I obtained a good 3M mask, I purchased these 3M Respirator Cartridge 6006 cartridges and viola, no more chem smells. That nasty epoxy that made my head spin? cant even smell it at all. No more dizziness or headaches.I give the 3M Respirator Cartridge 6006 my highest recommendation.Protect your health people, by a good 3M mask that can take these filter Cartridges and use it.DO NOT over think this, just buy the 3M mask and these cartridges and use them. For people who know other people or who have family members, and they work with nasty smelling chemicals, buy them a 3M mask and these cartridges as a gift because it could even be the gift of life and keep them healthy.I worked for years with nasty smelling stuff and did not use this 3M system. Who knows what harm I did myself by not wearing a proper chemical vapor filter system.

Keep the mast clean and it works perfectly
I used the mask while encapsulating my crawl space. The area was musty, extremely dusty and had chemicals from extermination of bugs. There was also some mold.I was sickened from a short visit the first time. After that visit I purchased the mast and the 6006 filters/ dust filter combination. I have spent 80 plus hours with no issues since wearing this mask filter combination. I change the dust filters every time in use the mask. I also dissemble and clean the mask after a few uses and keep the mask in a sealed bag. I change the main filters every 12 to 15 hours of use.
