ANSI Z87.1 Brazing Cutting IR Filter Lincoln Electric Safety Glasses Shade 5.0 Welding
EDITORIAL REVIEW: 4.4/5 β€” WC Safety Review of the Lincoln Electric Starlite, shade 5 welding safety glasses for gas cutting and brazing.
Editorial assessment by the WC Safety Editorial Team, based on the published Lincoln Electric specifications and category fit. We did not laboratory-test this product.

The Lincoln Electric Starlite IR Shade 5 is a dual-duty lens: an ANSI Z87.1+ impact-rated polycarbonate base with a built-in Shade 5.0 infrared filter, made for oxy-acetylene cutting, brazing, and medium gas welding. It blocks the bright, IR-rich light of gas processes while shielding against sparks and slag β€” and at under an ounce, it's light enough to live under a helmet as secondary protection (model K2967).

Why shade 5 welding safety glasses do a job a plain lens can't

Gas cutting and brazing throw two hazards at your eyes at once: bright, infrared-rich light and physical spatter. A plain shaded lens handles the first; a plain impact lens handles the second. The Starlite does both β€” Shade 5.0 IR filtering on an ANSI Z87.1+ polycarbonate base β€” which is why it's the natural eye layer for oxy-fuel work and the transition moments around it. Our full Starlite review rates it 4.4/5, and the can-safety-glasses-be-used-for-welding guide explains exactly where a shaded glass fits and where it doesn't.

Safety first: Shade 5 is for lower-radiation gas work only β€” it is not a substitute for a welding helmet during arc welding (MIG/TIG/stick), which produces intense UV and requires a much darker shade; using Shade 5 for arc work risks serious eye injury. And like any safety glass, it is not a seal against a chemical splash hazard or fine airborne particulate β€” those need sealed goggles or a face shield. Match the shade to your process and amperage with a shade-selection chart, and pair with respiratory protection where welding fumes are present.

What the listing documents

From the published specs: ANSI/ISEA Z87.1+ high-impact rating; a Shade 5.0 IR/welding filter on a polycarbonate lens; designed for oxy-acetylene cutting, brazing, and medium gas welding; weighs less than one ounce with a snug fit and large viewing area; model K2967; UPC 015082850290. As ir filter safety glasses the lincoln electric starlite pairs shade with impact, and these shade 5 welding glasses are built to double as under-helmet secondary protection.

Where the Starlite fits in a welder's kit

Shaded glasses are one layer of eye and face protection, not the whole stack. Arc welders still need a helmet β€” the welding helmets complete guide and auto-darkening helmet guide cover that layer, and the helmet collection stocks it. For heavier spatter or multi-angle debris, sealed cutting goggles from the welding goggles collection add coverage, and a face shield layers over the top. The safety glasses for welders guide ranks the shaded-glass options.

Comparing shaded eyewear

The Starlite competes with other shade-5 eyewear like the Sellstrom flip-up shade 5, which trades the fixed lens for a lift-up shade. Both live in the tinted safety glasses and welding safety glasses collections. For non-welding tinted needs β€” outdoor glare, low light β€” the general safety glasses collection and best safety glasses 2026 roundup cover clear and standard-tint frames.

Ownership: lens care, fume protection, and crew orders

Protect the coating: rinse grit before wiping, use a lens-safe cloth, and retire the lens once scratches cross your sightline. Store the glasses where hot slag can't pit them. Welding fumes are a separate hazard β€” pair the Starlite with respiratory protection from the welding respirators collection and fume-respirator guide where required, plus hand protection from the welding gloves collection and the welding gloves guide. New to the trade? The beginner helmet guide covers the primary eye protection every arc welder needs first. Great for water volleyball
I was lead to these glasses by a fellow water volleyball player. The shade 5 was excellent to see the ball even with a glaring sun overhead. Everything has a yellow hue but your eyes adjust quickly and you can count on seeing the ball.

Effective, but flimsy
These IR blocking glasses work well for light blocking and the tint does what it should. I like that these are certified so you know they are safe and effective, but the overall build feels cheaper than some other IR blocking glasses I've tried. The lens performance is the main reason to buy them. In terms of functionality, they block light well and work as expected for the intended use.The main thing that holds them back is the frame design. The plastic feels lightweight to the point of feeling a bit cheap. The bigger issue is that there is no real side shielding, so you still get noticeable light bleed from the edges. The front lens coverage is good, but the side exposure makes them less effective than some other models I've used.Overall these are a good basic option if you mainly care about the front lens blocking and want something lightweight, but the cheaper feel and side light bleed materially hold these back. Personally, I would choose a model with better side shielding if maximizing light blocking is your goal.

Work great, get them! do not jeopardize your eyesight!
Been using these for about a month now and they are perfect for grinding. Anyone who's ever used a grinder on steel can tell you that you tend to see spots afterwards from the brightness of the sparks. These aren't just regular sunglasses, they are like an extremely dark set of glasses, or a very light welding hood. You can see through them just fine as long as you have light, but you'll be pretty much blind if you are somewhere with out adequate light, or under a car for example. They are the fantastic quality you'd expect from a company like Lincoln Electric. Eye safety is something you do not skimp out on, no project is worth going blind over. Doesn't come with a case, I just keep them in my toolbox. They are very lightweight, and hold well to your face. Fits great. Overall, a fantastic value for your money. I will absolutely be purchasing another set as a backup incase I plant a small field of whoopsie daisies and destroy them accidentally.

No more Sun-Headeches
I use these glasses mainly for outside work on sunny days. The glasses are very lightweight but feel strong and are very well-made.They fit perfectly and are very comfortable to wear. I sometimes get a strong headache when working under direct sun, but these glasses fixed this problem entirely. I now use them while mowing, walking, running, great deal at a very reasonable price.

Good value for the functionality they provide
These Lincoln Electric Starlite glasses are perfect when you need quick eye protection for cutting or brazing without the hassle of a full welding mask. The IR shade 5 lens provides adequate protection for lighter duty tasks, and at less than an ounce, they're incredibly comfortable for extended wear. The snug fit prevents slippage, and the large viewing area gives you an unobstructed view for precision work.Build quality is solid with proper impact protection, so you're getting legitimate safety eyewear. They're genuinely convenient for grab and go situations where shade 5 is appropriate. I keep them nearby in my shop for quick tasks, and they've become essential for lighter welding adjacent work. Great value for the functionality they provide.

Great function working eye protection
I’ve been using these lenses for cutting, and it’s been excellent protection without feeling bulky or overkill. The shade level is just right, enough to protect your eyes while still keeping the work area clearly visible. One of the first things I noticed is how incredibly lightweight these are. At under an ounce, you honestly forget you’re wearing them, even during longer jobs. The fit is snug and comfortable, and they stay in place without constantly needing to be adjusted. The large viewing area is another big plus. There’s no tunnel vision, which makes precision work much easier and safer. I also like that they combine real impact protection with a more modern, stylish lookβ€”these don’t feel like clunky shop goggles. Great quality and a good value for the price.Overall, they’re comfortable, effective, and practical eye protection for cutting or brazing. If you want something lightweight that you can wear all day without fatigue, these are a great choice.

Very lightweight with a disposable feel, works fine for occasional cutting or brazing
These Lincoln safety glasses are very lightweight, they sit on your face a lot like a cheap pair of drugstore sunglasses, which makes them fairly comfortable and not bulky, but also gives them a more disposable feel. The green IR shade 5 lens seems to provide the protection needed for cutting or brazing, but the plastic lens isn’t perfectly clear and definitely feels lower-cost. Visibility is fine for getting the job done, just not crystal clear like higher-end safety glasses.Overall, these work well for occasional projects or one-off jobs. They’re comfortable, lightweight, and functional, but not something I’d expect to hold up to daily or professional use.

Provides decent protection, but not a replacement for goggles or a helmet
It's a much more lightweight and compact protection solution vs. goggles or a helmet. The build quality of the glasses are good, but it does feel a bit "build to a price point." They don't at all feel heavy on my nose, which is good when it comes to wearing them for a long period of time. They do provide decent area of coverage but of course it's not quite as good as goggles or a helmet. It's important to node that they're only rated for "observation of non-electric gas welding operations", so they're not an outright replacement for goggles or a helmet. The glasses seem a decent buy for the price.

Well made lightweight safety glasses!
These Lincoln Electric Starlite Saftey Glasses fit me perfectly. I have a larger sized head than most and often have a hard time finding safety glasses that fit. These glasses are lightweight and fit great. The curved arms keep them in place while I am weed whacking, cutting grass, or trimming the trees.Bonus that they had just the right amount of tint to block the sun but not the job you’re working on! I will continue using these for years to come and would recommend to others as well.
