Acid Gas NIOSH Approved Organic Vapor
EDITORIAL REVIEW: 4.8/5 WC Safety Review β€” 3M 6003 Organic Vapor and Acid Gas Respirator Cartridge

Best For: Jobs that mix organic solvent vapor with acid gas β€” paint and coatings, chemical processing, degreasing, pesticide handling, and maintenance β€” on a 3M bayonet half- or full-face respirator, where there is no significant dust.

Not For: Dust or particulate (no filter built in), ammonia, methylamine, formaldehyde, carbon monoxide, oxygen deficiency, or IDLH conditions.

Bottom Line: The 6003 is the one-cartridge answer when you face both solvent vapor and acid gas and want to stop swapping cartridges between tasks. If dust is also in the air, step up to the 3M 60923, which builds in P100.

3M 6003 Overview

The 3M 6003 is a NIOSH-approved organic vapor and acid gas respirator cartridge for 3M bayonet respirators. It adsorbs organic solvent vapors and common acid gases in a single cartridge and twist-locks onto 3M reusable half masks and full facepieces. Buy the 6003 when your work exposes you to both solvent vapor and acid gas at once and you would rather carry one combination cartridge than switch between a separate organic-vapor and acid-gas part.

It is a gas/vapor cartridge only β€” there is no particulate filter, so it does not stop dust, mist, or fume. If airborne particulate is part of the job, pair it with a 3M 5N11 or 5P71 prefilter behind a 501 retainer, or choose the all-in-one 3M 60923 (OV/AG + P100). To confirm the right class for your exposure, work through the how to choose a respirator cartridge guide, the 3M filter & cartridge guide, and the cartridge color chart, or browse the 3M filters and cartridges collection.

Where the 3M 6003 Fits in Respirator Selection

The 6003 is a two-class combination gas cartridge β€” choose it once you have confirmed, ideally through an industrial-hygiene assessment, that both organic vapor and acid gas are present and dust is not.

  • Organic vapor + acid gas, no dust β†’ the 6003.
  • Organic vapor + acid gas + dust β†’ 6003 with a prefilter, or the 3M 60923 with built-in P100.
  • Organic vapor only β†’ the single-class 3M 6001 is cheaper. See organic vapor vs P100.
  • Acid gas only β†’ the single-class 3M 6002 costs less.
  • Ammonia or formaldehyde too β†’ a multi-gas cartridge such as the 3M 6006. Review respirator filter types explained.

Who Should Buy the 3M 6003?

Buy the 6003 if your confirmed hazards are organic solvent vapor and acid gas together and there is no significant dust β€” painters and coatings applicators, chemical-process operators, parts degreasers, pesticide handlers, and maintenance crews who move between solvent and acid-gas tasks.

Choose a different part if:

  • Dust or mist is also present β†’ add a 5N11/5P71 prefilter, or buy the 3M 60923 (OV/AG + P100).
  • Only organic vapor is present β†’ the cheaper single-class 3M 6001.
  • Only acid gas is present β†’ the cheaper single-class 3M 6002.
  • Ammonia or formaldehyde is also in the mix β†’ the multi-gas 3M 6006.

What Does the 3M 6003 Protect Against?

Hazard 6003 Fit Buyer Guidance
Organic solvent vapor βœ… Yes Covers the OV half of the combination
Acid gas (e.g. chlorine, hydrogen chloride, sulfur dioxide) βœ… Yes Covers the AG half β€” one cartridge, two classes
Organic vapor + acid gas + dust ◐ Add prefilter Pair with 5N11/5P71, or use the 60923 (P100 built in)

What the 3M 6003 Does NOT Protect Against

  • Dust / particulate (no filter)
  • Ammonia
  • Methylamine
  • Formaldehyde
  • Carbon monoxide
  • Oxygen deficiency
  • Unknown atmospheres
  • IDLH conditions

Safety: The 3M 6003 is rated only for organic vapor and acid gas. It has no particulate filter and does not protect against ammonia, formaldehyde, or carbon monoxide, and no cartridge adds oxygen. Oxygen-deficient, unknown, and IDLH atmospheres require supplied air, SCBA, or another solution specified by a qualified safety professional. Where dust is also present, add a 5N11 prefilter or use the 3M 60923.

Best Applications for the 3M 6003

Paint, Coatings & Solvent Work

Spray painting and coating release organic solvent vapor, and the 6003 covers that exposure on a fit-tested 3M facepiece while also handling any acid gas in the same area. If overspray or mist is heavy, add a prefilter so the cartridge is not asked to do particulate work it cannot do. Compare classes in the color chart and browse the organic vapor cartridges collection.

Chemical Processing & Acid-Gas Tasks

Process and maintenance work often puts solvent vapor and acid gases such as chlorine or sulfur dioxide in the air at the same time, and the 6003 is built precisely for that combination. If only acid gas is present, the single-class 6002 costs less; see the acid gas cartridges collection.

Degreasing, Pesticide & Maintenance Handling

Parts degreasing and pesticide application expose workers to solvent vapor and sometimes acid gas, where the 6003 spares you from carrying two separate cartridges. Add a prefilter if powders or mists are airborne, or step up to the 60923 for combined gas and P100 protection. See the combination cartridges collection.

3M 6003 Pros & Cons

Pros Cons
Two hazard classes in one cartridge β€” no swapping for mixed work No particulate filter β€” needs a prefilter for dust
Low-profile, standard 3M bayonet fit Costs more than a single-class 6001 or 6002 when only one class is present
Works on 3M half and full facepieces For dust + gas, the 60923 is simpler

Compatible 3M Respirators

The 3M 6003 uses the standard 3M bayonet connection and mounts to 3M reusable half masks and full facepieces:

Respirator Type Compatible?
3M 6000 Half Mask Half mask βœ…
3M 6500 Half Mask Half mask βœ…
3M 7500 Half Mask Half mask βœ…
3M 6000 Full Face Full face βœ…
3M 7800S Full Face Full face βœ…
3M Ultimate FX FF-400 Full face βœ…

Standard 3M bayonet connection. Does not fit Honeywell North, Moldex, MSA, GVS, or 3M Secure Click respirators. For particulate, add a 5N11/5P71 prefilter with the 501 retainer, or attach a 2091 P100 filter stack.

3M 6003 vs Other 3M Gas Cartridges

Cartridge Protection Choose If
3M 6003 Organic vapor + acid gas (gas only) OV and AG together, no dust
3M 60923 Organic vapor + acid gas + P100 OV/AG with dust present
3M 6001 Organic vapor (gas only) Only solvent vapor β€” cheaper
3M 6002 Acid gas (gas only) Only acid gas β€” cheaper
3M 6006 Multi-gas (incl. ammonia, formaldehyde) Ammonia or formaldehyde also present

3M 6003 vs 60923

Both protect against organic vapor and acid gas; the difference is the particulate filter. The 6003 is gas-only, so if dust is present you must add a prefilter. The 3M 60923 builds a P100 filter into the same OV/AG cartridge. Buy the 6003 for clean solvent-and-acid-gas environments at the lowest cost. Buy the 60923 when dust or mist is also in the air and you want one-piece gas-plus-particulate protection.

3M 6003 vs 6001

The 6003 covers two classes β€” organic vapor and acid gas β€” while the 3M 6001 is single-class organic vapor only. Buy the 6001 when solvent vapor is your only hazard; it costs less and is purpose-built for that exposure. Buy the 6003 when acid gas is also present and you do not want to swap cartridges between tasks. If acid gas is the only hazard, the 6002 is the cheaper single-class choice.

3M 6003 Frequently Asked Questions

What is the 3M 6003 used for?

The 6003 is used for jobs that combine organic solvent vapor with acid gas β€” paint and coatings, chemical processing, degreasing, pesticide handling, and maintenance β€” on 3M bayonet respirators where there is no significant dust.

Does the 3M 6003 protect against acid gas?

Yes. The 6003 is a combination cartridge rated for both organic vapor and acid gases such as chlorine, hydrogen chloride, and sulfur dioxide, within NIOSH limits.

Does the 3M 6003 have a particulate filter?

No. The 6003 is a gas/vapor cartridge only. For dust, add a 3M 5N11 or 5P71 prefilter with a 501 retainer, or use the 3M 60923, which includes P100.

What respirators does the 3M 6003 fit?

It fits 3M bayonet respirators: the 6000, 6500, and 7500 half masks and the 6000, 7800S, and Ultimate FX FF-400 full facepieces. It does not fit Honeywell North, Moldex, MSA, GVS, or 3M Secure Click.

What is the difference between the 3M 6003 and 60923?

Both protect against organic vapor and acid gas. The 60923 adds a built-in P100 filter for dust; the 6003 is gas-only and needs a separate prefilter if particulate is present.

Should I buy the 3M 6003 or two separate cartridges?

If you regularly face both organic vapor and acid gas, the single 6003 saves you swapping between a 6001 and a 6002. If only one class is ever present, the matching single-class cartridge is cheaper.

Does the 3M 6003 protect against ammonia?

No. The 6003 is not rated for ammonia or methylamine. For those, use a multi-gas cartridge such as the 3M 6006, or an ammonia-specific cartridge.

Can I use the 3M 6003 for formaldehyde?

No. Formaldehyde is not covered by the 6003. A multi-gas cartridge such as the 3M 6006 is designed to include formaldehyde among its rated gases.

How many 3M 6003 cartridges do I need?

3M bayonet cartridges install as a pair, one on each side of the facepiece. Confirm the exact pack quantity on the current listing before ordering, as packaging can vary.

Is the 3M 6003 good for spray painting?

Yes, for the solvent-vapor and any acid-gas exposure on a fit-tested 3M respirator. If overspray or mist is heavy, add a 5N11/5P71 prefilter so the cartridge is not relied on for particulate.

When should I replace the 3M 6003?

Replace it on your employer's change-out schedule, or sooner if you detect vapor odor or taste, breathing becomes difficult, or the cartridge is damaged.

Should I buy the 3M 6003 or the 60923?

Buy the 6003 for clean solvent-and-acid-gas environments at the lowest cost. Buy the 60923 if dust or mist is also present and you want gas-plus-P100 protection in one cartridge.

Very good cartridge
I've used these 3M 6006 cartridges for many years at the plant where I worked and at home for spraying. They work as advertised when used in the appropriate 3M mask. Remember to visually check and pressure test that the inhalation and exhale valves are working properly in your mask. Without them, the cartridge doesn't help much. Repair parts are available from Amazon.

Particulate filtering is NOT N95 Compliant.
This filter does what 3M says it will do. It protects you from particulates and gases. The Seller questions section asks if this filter is N95 compliant. The seller mentions that he thinks the filter protects you against particulates. This filter -in and of itself- does not protect to the level of N95. I am guessing the seller never opened one of these because it would break the seal. Inside is the 3M fact sheet which advises you must add the 5N11 filter to achieve N95 level of protection. This info is also available on the 3M website. The picture shows the parts needed to protect to the level of N95. If you want only N95 particulate protection you don't need this filter. The 3 parts in the picture will get you that. Substitute this filter for part 603 if you want additional protection from gases. Add goggles and you have protection at the street demonstration from tear and other irritant gases. If you start to smell the gas is the time to replace it. This seems like a very good price for that level of protection.

Wrok fantastic But.....
I believe these are overkill for my application. These work fantastic (no odor at all) but a little hard to breath. Not bad but had to use some effort to get air while using there with the particle filter. I used to spray pesticides etc around yard. garden etc. - I decided to try the disc type filters for my application and that appears to work as I need. Id say this is designed for industrial applications rather then light duty around the house.

Keeping me from my Darwin award
Well I've done some toilet bowl rust cleaning with HCl for an extended period of time; probably a terrible idea, but that stuff destroys rust and I'm not dead, so the filters must work. I also used some sulfuric acid to unclog the drain in the same adventure. Also, I noticed that if I put on the mask for a few minutes, without doing anything or going anywhere, when I take off the mask I can smell chlorine in the air. I'm guessing this means that the mask is filtering out enough of the ambient chlorine in the air that I notice it once taking it off. Yay the filters work, boo my air smells like a pool and I didn't even know it.

Great for handling pool chemicals
I docked a Rating star for packaging because it came in the factory sealed 3M paper pouch, but there was no outer box. So, if the pouch had a gotten any abrasion during shipping or handling and a hole rubbed through, the expiry date out be void. As it stands, my package arrived intact. I received it June 2020 and the expiration is April 2025. I plan to use this right away, but I’m pleased to see that I did receive a fresh one with plenty of shelf life on the activated charcoal.I’m using this with a 3M 6900 full face respirator. If you handle strong swimming pool chemicals, I recommend this filter. I use it when mixing muriatic acid, strong concentrations of sodium hypochlorite, etc.

Tear gas, shmear gas
Been a victim of recent cr*mes against humanity? Organic vapor cartridges are exactly what you need when the violation of your first amendment rights lead you to being regularly gassed or pepper sprayed in the face. Show those piggies how much you want their bacon and slap these bad boys on your matching 3m respirator. They come in packs of 2 but can become overwhelmed in as little as 15 minutes of active gassing, so better to buy several sets! The next best option is the organic vapor cartridge with the pink particulate filter, but you can't rush ship those from Amazon right now. Also, don't forget your helmet and impact resistant goggles, better uncomfortable than murdered by the feds! Stay safe out there, folks.

Used when painting Gelcoat which releases lots of styrene, from a sensory perspective I could not smell any styrene with the mask on, without the mask the room reeked of styrene and would have been extremely unhealthy.

A holistic approach to product and company
This review take a holistic approach: The reliability of a product is directly tied with the trustfulness of the company that makes it which is directly tied to the level of care they have and show to their faithful customers. There are off the market chineze products that are probably just as good, but I don't review just that products alone in a vacuum, otherwise I would never buy expensive products form a trusted company like 3M. I review the reliability and trustfulness of the company as well which affects the trust I have in their products. The 6003 filters seem to work well. The problem is with 3M's treatment of customer relations, which does not differ from that of cheap nock-off product companies. Cheap nock-off companies do not take the time to develop relationships of trust with their customers, they do not respond to message, and couldn't care less for their customers concerns. Not always, but notably in my recent experiences, 3M is doing the exact same thing.I have emailed 3M numerous times about this cartridge and another related product (6001) asking how they differ. I gave them the safety data sheet of a vapor emitting product sold on the US market, and asked them to confirm whether both of the mentioned cartridges fully protect against the vapors of this product. They ignored my messages.Additionally it seems they don't want to talk to the small guy, as their contact form forces you to give them your company's name. So unless you work for a company, they won't talk to you. Serves you well millions of small individual contractors who have supported them for years. Who do you think you are to actually think you can contact the giant 3M company that you and your parents and your grandpa's shops supported for decades and helped them grow to what they are today? In these times, I need to know that my American companies are truly better and more trustworthy than their chineze counterparts, because their prices certainly claim so. In this case 3M you have left me very disappointed. I tried many many times to contact you!And what's my gripe? Oh, only protecting my long term health. 6003 and 6001 are clearly different, or else you wouldn't make two separate OV cartridges. How are they different? What does one protect from and the other doesn't? "Hey, just see if you smell anything dude and chill if you don't a'right?" You know, the nose-smell test isn't full proof. There are odorless things that can actually kill, like CO as an example. I know this isn't meant to protect against CO, but the point is valid. You won't always know by your nose if a cartridge is going to protect you from all or only from certain OVs. How do I know for sure this cartridge is going to protect me from the dangers of a certain vapor emitting product? By contacting the company who made the cartridge and providing them with that product's safety data sheet, expecting that they will be good people and answer back at some point. Yeah. You'll be waiting a very long time for 3M to care and cause them to answer or try to help. I still am, after months. Change that, and I'll change my review. Be better!!! Charging top prices isn't enough!
