Respirator Cartridge Color Chart โ€” NIOSH Color Code Guide (2026)

Respirator Cartridge Color Chart โ€” Every Color, Every Hazard, Every Product

Reviewed by the WC Safety Editorial Team โ€” Last updated: May 2026.

Short answer: NIOSH standardizes respirator cartridge colors under 42 CFR Part 84. Black = organic vapor. Magenta = P100 particulate. White = acid gas. Yellow = OV + acid gas. Green = ammonia. Olive = multi-gas. Brown = formaldehyde specialty. Blue = carbon monoxide. Combination cartridges show two colors simultaneously. Every NIOSH-approved brand โ€” 3M, Honeywell North, Moldex, MSA โ€” follows the same system. Use the fast-lookup table below to go from color to product.

NIOSH regulatory basis: Color coding is mandatory under NIOSH 42 CFR Part 84. All NIOSH-approved cartridges must display the correct color โ€” it is a federal marking requirement. OSHA 29 CFR 1910.134(d)(1) requires NIOSH-approved respirators matched to the specific hazard. Shop 3M cartridges and Honeywell North cartridges at WC Safety.

How to Verify Your Cartridge Color Before Every Use

A wrong cartridge on the right facepiece provides no protection. This three-step field check takes under thirty seconds and should happen before every donning.

  1. Find the color on the cartridge label or body. The color stripe or full-body color must be visible. If the color has faded significantly or is unreadable, discard the cartridge โ€” you cannot verify what it protects against.
  2. Match the color to your documented hazard. Compare it against the hazard identified in your SDS Section 8. Black must match an OV hazard. Magenta must match a particulate hazard. A color mismatch means wrong cartridge โ€” stop, swap, continue.
  3. Verify the NIOSH TC number on the label. Format is TC-23C-XXXX for combination cartridges. If no TC number appears, the cartridge is not NIOSH-approved and its color is not regulated. Do not use it.

Common Respirator Cartridge Color Mistakes

Black โ‰  dust protection

OV activated carbon adsorbs vapor molecules โ€” it does not capture solid particles. A black cartridge on concrete grinding allows 100% of respirable silica through unfiltered. Correct: magenta P100 โ€” 3M 2091. See: silica dust guide.

Magenta (P100) โ‰  vapor protection

A P100 fiber filter blocks particles โ€” vapor molecules pass straight through. A painter wearing magenta-only while spray painting is breathing 100% of the solvent vapor. Correct: black + magenta OV/P100 โ€” 3M 60921. See: paint fumes guide.

Colors are not universal across knockoffs

NIOSH color standards bind only approved manufacturers. A black cartridge from an unapproved seller may contain inadequate carbon and still display the correct color. Always verify the NIOSH TC approval number. Purchase only from authorized distributors.

Single color when the hazard requires a combination

Spray painting requires both black (vapor) and magenta (mist). Epoxy generates both reactive amine vapors and aerosol. Single-color cartridges are zero protection for the class they don't cover. See the complete cartridge selection guide.

What Does Each Respirator Cartridge Color Mean?

Black โ€” Organic Vapor (OV)

Black cartridges contain activated carbon that adsorbs vapor-phase organic chemicals: solvents (xylene, toluene, MEK, acetone, mineral spirits), paint fumes during brush or roller application, lacquers, degreasers, and petroleum vapors. OV cartridges are rated for chemicals with boiling points above 65ยฐC and require a written OSHA change schedule. Black does not protect against particles, acid gases, or ammonia. Products: 3M 6001 (3M half-mask) ยท North N75001L (North half-mask).

Magenta / Purple โ€” P100 Particulate

Magenta indicates P100 โ€” 99.97% efficiency at the most penetrating particle size (0.3 microns), oil-proof rated. Protects against silica dust, lead, asbestos, welding fume, mold spores, wood dust. Does not protect against gases or vapors of any kind. Products: 3M 2091 ยท North 7580P100.

3M 2091 vs. 3M 2097 โ€” what the color stripe means:

Both are predominantly magenta P100 filters, but the 3M 2097 has a black stripe indicating a thin activated carbon layer for nuisance-level OV odor relief. The black stripe does not make the 2097 a full OV cartridge โ€” it is not rated to protect against OV concentrations at or above the OSHA PEL. Use 2091 for pure particulate environments. Use 2097 when you expect P100-level dust with occasional minor solvent odor and the vapor concentration is well below the PEL. For any genuine vapor hazard, use a full OV/P100 combination cartridge (black + magenta, 3M 60921).

White โ€” Acid Gas

White cartridges use chemisorbent media (impregnated activated carbon or inorganic base) that reacts with acid gas molecules. Protects against chlorine (Clโ‚‚), hydrogen chloride (HCl), sulfur dioxide (SOโ‚‚), and hydrogen fluoride (HF). At elevated acid gas concentrations, a full-face respirator is required because acid gases also severely irritate eyes. Products: 3M 6002 ยท North N75002L.

Yellow โ€” OV + Acid Gas

Yellow combines an activated carbon OV layer with an acid gas chemisorbent in one cartridge. No P100 particulate protection. Use when solvents and acid gases are both present but particles are not. Product: 3M 6003 (SKU: 3M-6003).

Green โ€” Ammonia / Methylamine

Green cartridges use specialized impregnated sorbent for alkaline gases โ€” ammonia is not captured by standard OV carbon. At ammonia concentrations above 25 ppm (OSHA PEL), eye irritation warrants a full-face respirator. Products: 3M 6004 (SKU: 3M-6004) ยท 3M 60924 (green + magenta, adds P100).

Olive / Tan โ€” Multi-Gas Vapor

Olive is the broadest vapor-only color โ€” OV, acid gas, ammonia, and methylamine simultaneously in one cartridge. No P100. Used in chemical plants, environmental remediation, and any scenario requiring broad gas coverage. Products: 3M 6006 ยท North 75SCL Defender.

Black + Magenta โ€” OV / P100 Combination

The most common combination cartridge in general industry. Black + magenta means organic vapor plus P100 particulate in one unit โ€” the correct cartridge for spray painting, epoxy, polyurethane clearcoat, and isocyanate coatings. The OV layer captures solvent vapor; the P100 layer captures atomized mist and aerosol. Products: 3M 60921 ยท North 75SCP100L ยท North 7581P100L. See: paint fumes guide.

White + Magenta โ€” Acid Gas / P100

White + magenta provides acid gas protection plus P100 particulate filtration in one cartridge. Use when acid gases (Clโ‚‚, HCl, SOโ‚‚) and solid particulates are present simultaneously โ€” for example, pool chemical handling with calcium hypochlorite dust, or metal pickling with mist and particles. Provides no OV protection. Products: 3M 60922 (SKU: 3M-60922) ยท North 7582P100L.

Yellow + Magenta โ€” OV / Acid Gas / P100

Yellow + magenta delivers organic vapor, acid gas, and P100 particulate protection together โ€” one of the broadest combination cartridges available in the 3M lineup without adding ammonia coverage. Use in industrial chemical processing environments where solvents, acid gases, and particles are all simultaneously present. Product: 3M 60923 (SKU: 3M-60923). For the North platform, the North 7582P100L covers acid gas/P100 and the North 75SCP100L covers OV/P100.

Olive + Magenta โ€” Multi-Gas / P100

Olive + magenta is the broadest single-cartridge option available for most elastomeric respirators โ€” OV, acid gas, ammonia, methylamine, and P100 particulate in one unit. If you need to cover multiple unknown or variable gas/vapor hazards plus dust, olive + magenta is the correct selection. It still does not protect against carbon monoxide, oxygen deficiency, or IDLH concentrations. Product: 3M 60926 (SKU: 3M-60926).

Brown โ€” Formaldehyde (Specialty)

Brown indicates formaldehyde-specific impregnation. Standard OV (black) cartridges provide inadequate protection against formaldehyde because of its low boiling point (โˆ’19ยฐC) and high polarity โ€” formaldehyde requires an impregnated sorbent, not plain activated carbon. Brown-component cartridges appear as brown + black + magenta in combination products. Governed by OSHA 29 CFR 1910.1048. Applications: embalming, phenol-formaldehyde resin manufacturing, particle board and MDF fabrication. Primary product in the WC Safety catalog: North 7583P100L (formaldehyde / OV / P100) โ€” a specialty cartridge with no 3M equivalent.

Blue โ€” Carbon Monoxide (CO)

Blue is the NIOSH color for carbon monoxide cartridges. CO cartridges use hopcalite catalyst (a manganese/copper oxide mixture) that oxidizes CO to COโ‚‚. In practice, standalone CO APR cartridges have very limited use: hopcalite is sensitive to moisture, has a short service life once opened, and CO's IDLH of 1,200 ppm is only 20ร— its PEL of 50 ppm โ€” making the margin between permissible and immediately dangerous very narrow. OSHA generally requires supplied-air or SCBA for serious CO exposure rather than air-purifying CO cartridges. If CO appears on an SDS as a co-hazard, consult an industrial hygienist before selecting an APR solution.

Note on N95 disposables and color coding:

The NIOSH 42 CFR Part 84 color coding system applies to cartridges and canisters for elastomeric (reusable) respirators โ€” it does not govern the body color of N95, N99, or N100 disposable filtering facepiece respirators (FFRs). Disposable FFRs may be any color their manufacturer chooses. A magenta P100 cartridge on a 3M 6200 facepiece is a regulated NIOSH marking; the teal or white body of a 3M 8511 N95 disposable is not part of the same system. Do not use the cartridge color chart to evaluate or compare disposable N95 respirators.

3M Respirator Cartridge Color Chart โ€” All Major Models

All 3M cartridges use the NIOSH color system and fit only 3M bayonet facepieces (6000, 6500, 7500 half-mask series and 7800S/FF-400 full-face). Note the separate filter series for full-face โ€” the 2291/2296/2297 are the 7800S equivalents of the 2091/2096/2097 disc filters used on half-masks. See the 3M filter and cartridge guide for complete selection detail.

Are Respirator Cartridge Colors Universal?

The color system is universal. The physical cartridges are not. And the color system does not apply to disposable N95 respirators.

Colors โ€” universal across NIOSH-approved brands: NIOSH 42 CFR Part 84 mandates the same color for the same hazard class for every approved manufacturer. Black always means OV. Magenta always means P100. A compliance inspector, a safety manager, or a worker picking up a cartridge from any approved brand can immediately identify the protection class by color.

Physical compatibility โ€” brand-specific only: 3M cartridges fit only 3M bayonet facepieces. North cartridges fit only North bayonet facepieces. Moldex snap-on cartridges fit only Moldex facepieces. Forcing a non-matching cartridge onto a facepiece breaks the seal โ€” the color-matched protection disappears the moment sealing integrity is lost.

Counterfeits โ€” not covered by the standard: The NIOSH color coding mandate applies only to products submitted for and granted NIOSH approval. Counterfeit and unapproved cartridges are not bound by it. They may display NIOSH-reserved colors with no corresponding protective function. Verify the TC approval number (TC-23C-XXXX format) before using any cartridge purchased outside an authorized distributor channel.

N95 disposables โ€” a separate system: The 42 CFR Part 84 cartridge color codes apply to cartridges and canisters for elastomeric respirators. N95/N99/N100 disposable filtering facepiece respirators (FFRs) are governed by a different portion of 42 CFR Part 84 and have no mandated color coding. The teal or white body of a 3M 8511 N95 is not part of the cartridge color chart. See our N95 vs. P100 guide for disposable vs. elastomeric comparisons.

Respirator Cartridge Color Chart โ€” Frequently Asked Questions

What do respirator cartridge colors mean?

NIOSH color codes under 42 CFR Part 84 identify the chemical hazard class every cartridge protects against. Black = organic vapor (solvents, paint). Magenta = P100 particulate (silica, lead, welding fume). White = acid gas (Clโ‚‚, HCl, SOโ‚‚). Yellow = OV + acid gas. Green = ammonia/methylamine. Olive = multi-gas vapor. Brown = formaldehyde specialty. Blue = carbon monoxide. Combination cartridges show two colors: black + magenta for OV/P100, yellow + magenta for OV/AG/P100, olive + magenta for multi-gas/P100.

Are respirator cartridge colors universal?

The color system is universal for NIOSH-approved elastomeric respirator cartridges. Physical cartridges are brand-specific. Black is always OV across 3M, North, Moldex, and MSA. Magenta is always P100. However, 3M cartridges fit only 3M facepieces, and so on. The color system also does not apply to disposable N95 filtering facepiece respirators. Counterfeit products are not required to follow NIOSH colors โ€” always verify the TC approval number.

What color cartridge is for paint fumes?

Spray painting: black + magenta (OV/P100). Brush/roller with oil-based paint: black (OV only). The 3M 60921 (black + magenta) is the most-specified spray painting cartridge. An N95 or magenta-only P100 provides zero solvent vapor protection. See our paint fumes respirator guide.

What color cartridge is for silica dust?

Magenta โ€” P100 particulate filter. The 3M 2091 and North 7580P100 are the standard silica filters. P100 captures 99.97% of respirable crystalline silica. A black OV cartridge on concrete grinding provides zero particulate protection. OSHA 1926.1153 Table 1 requires P100 for key concrete cutting and grinding tasks. See our silica dust guide.

What color cartridge is for welding fumes?

Magenta (P100) for standard steel welding. Black + magenta (OV/P100) for coated or galvanized metal. Welding fumes are submicron metal oxide particles โ€” iron oxide, manganese, chromium โ€” captured by P100 at 99.97%. The 3M 2091 is the most common welding fume filter. When welding galvanized steel (zinc oxide) or metal with organic coatings, upgrade to black + magenta (3M 60921) to capture both the fume particles and any coating vapors. Welding also generates ozone and NOโ‚“ that OV cartridges don't specifically address โ€” consult an IH for complex alloy welding environments.

What color cartridge is for mold?

Magenta โ€” P100 particulate filter. Mold spores are biological particles (2โ€“20 microns) captured by P100 at 99.97% efficiency. The 3M 2091 in a fit-tested elastomeric half-face or full-face respirator is the standard for professional mold remediation. If antifungal biocides with organic solvent carriers are used simultaneously, upgrade to black + magenta (OV/P100). EPA mold guidelines allow N95 for small areas under 100 sq ft; P100 elastomeric is the correct choice for sustained professional remediation.

What color cartridge is for asbestos?

Magenta โ€” P100 particulate filter. OSHA 1910.1001 and 1926.1101 require P100 for regulated asbestos work. Asbestos fibers are captured at 99.97% efficiency by P100. The 3M 2091 and North 7580P100 are the standard asbestos abatement filters. Full-face respirators are commonly required for regulated asbestos work to also protect the eyes โ€” confirm with your site's written asbestos program. See our asbestos respirator guide.

What color is P100?

Magenta (purple). Every P100 filter from every NIOSH-approved brand is magenta. Combination cartridges that include P100 always show magenta as one of two colors: black + magenta for OV/P100, white + magenta for acid gas/P100, yellow + magenta for OV/AG/P100, olive + magenta for multi-gas/P100. If no magenta is present, the cartridge has no P100 particulate protection.

What color is the organic vapor cartridge?

Black. Any cartridge with a black component contains activated carbon for OV protection. Black-only (3M 6001) = pure OV. Black + magenta (3M 60921) = OV + P100. Yellow (3M 6003) = OV + acid gas. Olive (3M 6006) = OV + acid gas + ammonia. All black-component cartridges require a written OSHA change schedule.

Can one cartridge protect against everything?

No. The broadest single-cartridge option is olive + magenta โ€” the 3M 60926, covering OV, acid gas, ammonia, and P100 particulate. Even this doesn't protect against CO, oxygen deficiency, IDLH concentrations, or unknown atmospheres. Those require supplied-air or SCBA โ€” no cartridge color provides protection in those conditions. See the complete cartridge selection guide.

What is the difference between 3M 2091 and 3M 2097?

Both are magenta P100 filters, but the 3M 2097 has a black stripe indicating nuisance-level OV relief. The 3M 2091 is pure P100 particulate only. The 3M 2097 adds a thin carbon layer that reduces low-level OV odor โ€” it is not a substitute for a full OV cartridge and is not rated to protect against OV at or above the OSHA PEL. Use 2091 for pure particulate environments. Use 2097 when particulate is the primary hazard and only incidental low-level vapor odor is present.

Do N95 respirators follow the NIOSH cartridge color chart?

No โ€” the cartridge color chart applies only to cartridges for elastomeric reusable respirators. N95, N99, and N100 disposable filtering facepiece respirators (FFRs) are governed by a different portion of 42 CFR Part 84 and have no mandated body color. The teal or white body color of a disposable N95 is not part of the cartridge color coding system. See our N95 vs. P100 guide and our NIOSH certification guide for full context.

What do the colors mean for OSHA compliance?

OSHA 29 CFR 1910.134(d)(1) requires NIOSH-approved respirators matched to the specific hazard. The color code is the visual confirmation that the match is correct. A compliance inspector reviewing your respiratory protection program can cross-check the installed cartridge color against the documented hazard in your written program. A magenta P100 in a documented OV environment is a compliance failure as well as a safety hazard. Written change schedules under 1910.134(d)(3)(ii)(B) must reference the cartridge class โ€” which the color identifies. See our NIOSH vs. OSHA guide.

What color is the 3M 60921 cartridge?

Black and magenta โ€” OV/P100 combination. The 3M 60921 is the most-specified spray painting cartridge in North America. Black indicates the activated carbon OV layer (solvent vapor protection). Magenta indicates the P100 fiber filter layer (99.97% particle efficiency). Together they address both the solvent vapor and atomized mist hazards in spray painting simultaneously. Compatible with 3M 6000, 6500, 7500 half-masks and 7800S/FF-400 full-face via the 3M bayonet mount.

How long do cartridges last โ€” does the color affect change schedule?

Yes โ€” change schedule is determined by color class. Magenta P100: condition-based only, no time schedule. Black OV and all combination cartridges with a black or green or olive component (OV, ammonia, or multi-gas layer): written OSHA change schedule required, minimum end of shift. White acid gas: written schedule, replace at first odor breakthrough. Opened OV cartridges begin losing capacity when not in use โ€” discard 6 months from first opening. See our respirator cartridge lifespan guide.
