Self-Retracting Lifelines
Self-retracting lifelines and personal fall limiters are the most effective connecting devices available for fall arrest — automatically taking up slack as the worker moves, activating instantly when a fall begins, and arresting the fall in a fraction of the distance required by a traditional energy-absorbing lanyard. While a 6-foot shock-absorbing lanyard can allow up to 10 feet of total fall distance (6 feet of free fall plus 3.5 feet of deceleration), a properly selected self-retracting lifeline arrests a fall within inches of where it begins. WC Safety carries MSA Safety's V-TEC® and V-SHOCK® self-retracting lifeline and personal fall limiter lineup, ANSI Z359.14-certified and engineered for the full spectrum of industrial and construction applications.
The MSA V-TEC® series encompasses the core range of self-retracting lifelines for standard overhead anchorage applications. V-TEC® SRLs are available in cable and web configurations, in lengths ranging from 6 feet for tight vertical applications to 100 feet and beyond for long vertical descents. The V-TEC® Personal Fall Limiter (PFL) represents MSA's ultra-compact SRL format — engineered to be one of the smallest and lightest SRLs ever developed, with a minimal housing profile that reduces interference with work activities and can be worn connected directly to the dorsal D-ring rather than hung from an overhead structure. This makes the V-TEC® PFL the ideal choice for workers who need fall protection while climbing, working on ladders, or navigating tight structural environments where a standard lanyard would create unacceptable trip or snag hazards.
The MSA V-SHOCK® EDGE Leading Edge Personal Fall Limiter addresses one of the most hazardous fall protection scenarios: leading edge work where the SRL cable may contact the edge of a surface during a fall. Standard SRLs are tested and rated for overhead use only — when the cable contacts a sharp or abrasive leading edge during a fall, the arresting forces can sever the cable, causing a complete system failure. The V-SHOCK® EDGE is specifically rated and tested for leading edge applications per ANSI Z359.14 Class 2 requirements, using a reinforced cable and leading-edge-rated housing designed to remain intact when the lifeline contacts a structural edge. This makes it the required choice for ironworkers, roofers, and others working at unprotected edges where standard SRLs are prohibited.
Selecting the correct SRL requires understanding the application and anchorage configuration. Overhead anchorage — where the SRL hangs directly above the worker — provides the shortest possible fall distance and is always the preferred configuration. When only side or foot-level anchorage is available, swing fall hazards must be analyzed, and longer SRLs or alternative connecting devices may be required. MSA's V-TEC® and V-SHOCK® product documentation includes clear application guidelines and fall clearance calculation tools that help safety professionals select the right device for every situation.
All MSA self-retracting lifelines include an internal energy absorber that limits peak arresting force to 900 pounds or less (ANSI Z359.14 Class B) or 1,800 pounds or less (Class A), well within OSHA's 1,800-pound maximum arresting force limit. The self-tensioning mechanism maintains constant slight tension on the lifeline, eliminating slack that could contribute to extended free-fall distance. Most V-TEC® and V-SHOCK® models include a built-in swivel that prevents lifeline twist during work, extending component life and improving function during fall events.
WC Safety stocks MSA V-TEC® and V-SHOCK® self-retracting lifelines in cable and web configurations, in multiple lengths to match your working height and anchorage distance. Each unit is NIOSH-certified and includes manufacturer documentation supporting your equipment inspection and recordkeeping program. Pair with MSA V-SERIES® full body harnesses and compatible anchorage connectors for a complete, integrated fall protection system.

Frequently Asked Questions
What are self-retracting lifelines used for?
Paying out and reeling in like a seatbelt, a self-retracting lifeline locks fast to limit fall distance, working in concert with the harness, connector, and anchorage.
What anchor strength does OSHA require?
Each anchorage for fall arrest has to hold 5,000 pounds per attached worker, unless a qualified person engineers it to keep a safety factor of at least two.
Self-retracting lifeline or shock-absorbing lanyard - which should I use?
Because an SRL locks quickly and cuts free fall, it suits lower heights; a shock-absorbing lanyard demands more clearance below for its energy pack to deploy fully.
How much fall clearance do I need?
Total up the connector length, deceleration distance, harness stretch, worker height, and a safety margin, and keep that sum under the drop to the next lower level.
How often must self-retracting lifelines be inspected?
Check before every use, then have a competent person carry out a documented inspection at least once a year, just as ANSI Z359 sets out.
When should I retire fall-protection equipment?
Pull it from service after any fall-arrest event, or once webbing is cut or frayed, hardware is bent or corroded, or load-impact indicators have deployed.
What makes a complete fall-arrest system?
Together the anchorage, body harness, and connector - your lanyard or self-retracting lifeline - make up the ABC of fall protection and belong in use as a set.
At what height is fall protection required?
OSHA generally sets the trigger at 6 feet in construction and 4 feet in general industry near unprotected edges, dropping lower around dangerous equipment.
How do I choose an anchor point?
Select a rated, compatible anchor and place it overhead where you can, since an overhead anchor trims the arrest distance and limits dangerous swing-fall.
Does fall-protection equipment expire?
No fixed expiry applies, so defer to the manufacturer's guidance and retire any harness or device that fails inspection or has taken a fall.
