EDITORIAL REVIEW: 4.7/5WC Safety Review β€” 3M E-A-Rsoft FX 312-1261 Cordless Earplugs

Best For: corded single-use foam hearing protection at NRR 33 dB in a low-profile uncorded design.

Not For: non-noise hazards, or noise that earplugs alone can't bring under ~85 dBA (add earmuffs).

Bottom Line: a practical single-use foam plug at NRR 33 dB β€” the uncorded low-profile fit suits tight spaces and high-volume single-use.

3M E-A-Rsoft FX 312-1261 Cordless Earplugs Overview

The 3M E-A-Rsoft FX 312-1261 Cordless Earplugs are cordless single-use foam ear plugs from 3M, rated NRR 33 dB. With no cord to catch or snag, they keep a low profile for tight and confined spaces β€” the most economical choice for high-volume single-use. Start with our hearing-protection guide and what NRR means, then confirm the noise level you’re protecting against.

The 3M E-A-Rsoft FX 312-1261 belong to the cordless ear plugs range and the NRR 33 ear plugs group. They are single-use (replace when soiled or no longer springy); for the trade-offs see foam vs reusable ear plugs.

What NRR 33 dB Means

NRR is a laboratory rating; NIOSH suggests derating it for real-world use. Here is how NRR 33 dB lines up with common environments (always confirm with a noise survey):

Environment Approx. noise Fit for NRR?
Power tools / workshop (~95 dBA) ~82 dBA after derating Good fit
Heavy equipment / construction (~100 dBA) ~87 dBA after derating Good fit
Manufacturing / plant floor (~90 dBA) ~77 dBA after derating Good fit
Firearms / impact (140 dB peak) Impulse noise Add earmuffs (dual)

Who Should Buy the 3M E-A-Rsoft FX 312-1261?

Buy them if you want single-use foam hearing protection in a low-profile uncorded design at NRR 33 dB. Consider another plug if you need a different level or style: compare E-A-R UltraFit 340-4003, E-A-Rsoft SuperFit 312-1256, E-A-R Push-Ins 318-1000. For the highest ratings see highest-NRR ear plugs.

Hearing protection only works when worn correctly for the full exposure. The NRR is a laboratory rating; real-world attenuation is typically lower, so OSHA and NIOSH recommend derating it when estimating protection. For very high noise β€” or whenever earplugs alone can’t bring exposure under about 85 dBA β€” wear them with earmuffs (dual protection). The 3M E-A-Rsoft FX 312-1261 reduces noise; it does not eliminate it or protect against non-noise hazards.

Best Applications

Industrial & construction noise

Power tools, plants and construction work at sustained high noise suit a low-profile uncorded NRR 33 plug that won’t snag in tight spaces.

Shooting & range use

For range and shooting use, pair a high NRR with muffs for impulse noise.

Pros & Cons

Pros
NRR 33 dB protection Β· no cord to snag, low-profile for tight spaces Β· soft single-use comfort Β· one size fits most
Cons

Love these hearing savers
These are by far my favorite ear plugs, they fit great, reduce the noise significantly, they are great quality. They are easy to install if you install them properly that is when the work the best. They include installing instructions for a reason! They are very durable. I'm sure they would work great for sleeping also.

Best Ear Plugs I've Found
I hate having to wear ear plugs. But I have a wife who snores at a decibel level to rival the takeoff of an Atlas rocket booster. So several years ago I started buying ear plugs. The ones I bought in the drug stores were mediocre at best. My brother recommended these and sent me several pairs. They block noise more effectively (when properly inserted) than any others I've found, and they also last longer. I can use them for four or five days before replacing them rather than one or two with others. I can still hear my wife snoring with them inserted but at least the decibel reduction allows me to sleep. They are also excellent for wearing while shooting firearms. They come in little plastic envelopes and it is very handy to toss a few pairs into your luggage and/or glove compartment to have ready for whatever need comes along.

Good for sleeping
These are a good compromise between the orange earplugs I found too hard, which cut more noise but put pressure on my ear canal, and the yellow earplugs that don't have the flared bell shape that were too difficult to remove. I use these at night to cut my wife's mild snoring noise. They don't eliminate it, just dampen enough so I can sleep through it. Because they are softer and have no strap, I can lay on my side without feeling them. My wife wears them, too, because I sometimes stay up late and they cut the TV sound as heard from downstairs. If you just go by the decibel rating, you'll be disappointed with these because they only get that rating at some frequencies. The orange ones (Howard Leight) have a broader spectrum of attentuation. These will sometimes tear chunks out during removal but usually I can remove them with my fingers.I have found that for me, I can reuse them one night. After that, they aren't effective enough. Earwax can be removed from them with rubbing alcohol, but it's a chore and they don't work as well then, either. For sleep use, I recommend them.

Product has changed
The first time I order these they were perfect! I just order another box in November and it seems like the material is different. They're not as comfortable and the foam takes forever to expand after you roll it to put it in your ear. Wondering if anyone else has the same issue with a recent purchase?

The best earplugs I have used
I have tried oh so many different earplugs over the years, searching for the perfect balance of noise cancellation and minimum pressure against the inside of my ear canal. The hospital gave me these earplugs for an MRI test. They were so great I immediately ordered 200 of them. I have stopped my search for the perfect earplugs because these are it.

Huge box of the best earplugs for small/normal ears
I have very small ear canals, often thwarting the fitment of the smallest size caps included with audio earbuds and of "women and children" sized reusable hearing protection. Needless to say, I tend to use earmuffs instead. In some situations, though, they are uncomfortable or in the way and earplugs are what is needed. I went on a search to find the best and these are it. Once I've managed to squish them down nice and tight I can get them in my ears and wear them for reasonable periods of time without major discomfort, which is far more than I can say about many other types of earplugs.I also was not expecting the size of the box considering the price. If you go to the home store you can pay $10 for a small package of cheap earplugs, this is 200 pairs of them in an industrial dispenser box!Despite being regarded as disposable, I put them in a small ziplock bag when done and they tend to stay clean enough for many uses. Eventually they start to expand too fast and you can't get them in anymore, but that takes quite awhile. They also are disposable so I don't worry about it if one gets dropped in the dirt or otherwise. Everyone should have a box of these around, going deaf really sucks!
