3M Ultimate FX FF-400 Full Face Respirator (FF-401 / FF-402 / FF-403) — Reusable APF 50 Facepiece Overview

The 3M Ultimate FX FF-400 Full Face Respirator is a tight-fitting, reusable facepiece built for repeated industrial use across painting, sanding, abatement, chemical handling, and welding-adjacent tasks. It is sold in three sizes — FF-401 (small), FF-402 (medium), and FF-403 (large) — so you can match the seal to the wearer's face. This is a negative-pressure air-purifying respirator, not a powered unit: there is no blower, battery, or hood. Air is pulled through the cartridges or filters you attach.

Used with a passing fit test, this facepiece carries an OSHA assigned protection factor (APF) of 50. The wide, scratch- and impact-resistant polycarbonate lens delivers a large unobstructed field of view, and the soft silicone faceseal with 3M's Cool Flow exhalation valve reduces heat and moisture buildup during long shifts. The full-face design also protects the eyes from splashes, dust, and vapors that would defeat a half-mask.

The FF-400 uses 3M's bayonet (3M cartridge) connection, so it pairs with 3M 6000-series gas/vapor cartridges and 2000/7000-series particulate filters — cartridges and filters are sold separately. Choose the cartridge by hazard: organic vapor, acid gas, multi-gas, or P100 particulate. For help matching a cartridge to your exposure, see our how to choose a cartridge guide.

Because this is a tight-fitting respirator, the wearer must be clean-shaven at the sealing surface, pass an annual fit test, and perform a user seal check before every entry. Facial hair at the seal voids the rating — read respirators and facial hair before buying. For program context, the respiratory protection guide walks through selection and OSHA 1910.134 requirements. Browse more full-face respirators or the full respiratory protection range. Never use beyond the APF or in IDLH or oxygen-deficient atmospheres.

What It Is Built For

Use case Fit Buyer guidance
Spray painting, solvents, automotive refinish Strong fit Pair the FF-400 facepiece with 3M organic-vapor cartridges (sold separately) and a particulate pre-filter for overspray. Full-face design also shields eyes from spray mist.
Abatement, sanding, demolition dust Strong fit Add P100 particulate filters via the bayonet mount. APF 50 covers most non-IDLH dust tasks when fit-tested. See our P100 filter options.
Acid gas / multi-gas chemical handling Good fit Attach an acid-gas or multi-gas cartridge matched to your exposure. Confirm the contaminant is on the cartridge's approval and never exceed the APF.
Eye-and-respiratory splash protection Strong fit The wide lens replaces separate goggles where vapors and splashes threaten the eyes — a key reason to choose full-face over a half-mask.
Bearded wearers or IDLH atmospheres Not suitable Tight-fitting masks require a clean-shaven seal and are not rated for IDLH or oxygen-deficient air. Consider a loose-fitting PAPR instead.

Respirators must be selected, fit, and maintained under a written program per OSHA 29 CFR 1910.134. Tight-fitting facepieces require a clean-shaven seal, an annual fit test, and a user seal check every time they are donned; loose-fitting PAPR hoods and helmets do not seal to the face but still require the program and the correct assigned protection factor. Use only NIOSH-approved cartridges/filters matched to the specific hazard, never use any air-purifying respirator in an IDLH or oxygen-deficient atmosphere, and follow the change-out schedule. See the respiratory protection guide and how to do a user seal check.

Pros & Cons

Pros
  • Reusable full-face facepiece with OSHA APF 50 when fit-tested
  • Three sizes (FF-401 small / FF-402 medium / FF-403 large) for a better seal
  • Wide scratch- and impact-resistant lens gives a large field of view plus eye protection
  • 3M bayonet mount accepts widely available 3M 6000-series cartridges and 2000/7000-series filters
  • Silicone faceseal with Cool Flow valve eases heat and breathing during long wear
Cons
  • Cartridges and filters are sold separately — not included
  • Tight-fitting: requires a clean-shaven seal, annual fit test, and pre-use seal check
  • Not a PAPR — no powered airflow, so breathing is negative-pressure effort
  • Not rated for IDLH or oxygen-deficient atmospheres

How It Compares

The FF-400 Ultimate FX is 3M's premium full-face line, distinguished by its wide single-lens design, silicone faceseal, and Cool Flow valve. Its sibling, the 3M 6000-series full face respirator (6700/6800/6900), is the value full-face option in the same family — same APF 50 and the same 3M bayonet cartridge mount, but with a more basic lens and faceseal. Both are tight-fitting and both need a fit test; choose the FF-400 for a larger field of view and longer-wear comfort, or the 6000-series to standardize at lower cost.

Model Type APF Sizes Cartridge mount Best for
3M FF-400 Ultimate FX (FF-401/402/403) Full face, reusable 50 S / M / L 3M bayonet Wide-view comfort, long wear
3M 6000 Series (6700/6800/6900) Full face, reusable 50 S / M / L 3M bayonet Lower-cost full-face standard

Both accept the same 3M cartridges — see the full-face respirators collection to compare, or step down to a half-mask respirator if eye protection isn't required.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the 3M FF-400 come with cartridges or filters?

No. The FF-400 (FF-401, FF-402, FF-403) is sold as the facepiece only. You select and buy 3M cartridges or filters separately based on your hazard — see our how-to-choose-a-cartridge guide.

What's the difference between FF-401, FF-402, and FF-403?

They are the same Ultimate FX facepiece in three sizes: FF-401 is small, FF-402 is medium, and FF-403 is large. Choose the size that passes a fit test on the wearer's face; medium fits most adults.

Is the FF-400 a PAPR?

No. It is a tight-fitting, negative-pressure full-face respirator with no blower, battery, or hood. You breathe through the attached cartridges under your own lung power. If you need powered airflow or can't fit-test, look at a loose-fitting PAPR instead.

What is the assigned protection factor (APF) of the FF-400?

When used with a passing fit test, this full-face respirator has an OSHA assigned protection factor of 50, meaning it can reduce exposure to 1/50 of the airborne concentration for hazards its cartridges are approved against.

Which cartridges fit the FF-400?

The FF-400 uses 3M's bayonet (3M cartridge) connection, so it accepts 3M 6000-series gas and vapor cartridges and 2000/7000-series particulate filters. Match the cartridge to your contaminant — organic vapor, acid gas, multi-gas, or P100.

Do I need a fit test to use this respirator?

Yes. OSHA 1910.134 requires an annual fit test for any tight-fitting respirator, plus a user seal check before each use. The wearer must be clean-shaven where the mask seals.

Can I wear the FF-400 with a beard or stubble?

No. Facial hair crossing the sealing surface breaks the seal and voids the APF. You must be clean-shaven at the faceseal. If facial hair is a constraint, read our respirators-and-facial-hair guide for loose-fitting alternatives.

How does the FF-400 compare to the 3M 6000-series full face?

Both are tight-fitting APF 50 full-face respirators on the same 3M bayonet mount. The FF-400 Ultimate FX adds a wider lens, silicone faceseal, and Cool Flow valve for better visibility and long-wear comfort; the 6000-series is the lower-cost standard option.

Does the full-face design protect my eyes?

Yes. The wide polycarbonate lens shields the eyes and face from splashes, dust, and vapors, which is the main advantage over a half-mask. It is scratch- and impact-resistant for industrial use.

Can I use the FF-400 in an IDLH or oxygen-deficient atmosphere?

No. Air-purifying respirators must never be used in atmospheres that are immediately dangerous to life or health, oxygen-deficient, or above the cartridge's rated capacity. Those conditions require a supplied-air or SCBA system.

How do I perform a user seal check on the FF-400?

Cover the cartridges and inhale (negative check) and exhale (positive check) to confirm the mask draws in and holds without leaking around the seal. Follow our step-by-step user seal check guide before every use.

Is the FF-400 NIOSH approved and reusable?

Yes. It is a NIOSH 42 CFR 84 approved reusable respirator. With proper cleaning, inspection, and cartridge replacement, the facepiece is designed for repeated use under an OSHA 1910.134 program.

You Cannot Put a Price on Safety plus Comfort! ____ This IS Worth Every Penny!!
My husband works in asbestos and other hazardous product removal and needed a better quality mask than the one provided at work. After hearing from a co-worker about his recommendation for this mask, we went ahead and purchased it from this seller. He could not have been happier with the purchase. The mask does not fog up and there is a specialized mouthpiece that allows the wearer to be easily heard unlike other masks, which is a huge perk when needing to communicate with others on a job. The mask also came with a product sample of a peel and stick face front cover made with scotch guard technology to protect the outer cover from being scratched. The pros of having the full-face cover is to further protect your face and eyes from being hurt by debris or other objects. My husband feels confident that he is safer around asbestos and other harmful materials at work with this mask. One of the best perks among the added safety is the comfort and secure fit of this mask. The headpiece and straps and comfortable and easily adjustable. My husband used to complain that his masks at work would cut into his skin and cause constriction, especially around the nose and mouth piece, but this mask eliminates that completely! Plus the face mask easily comes apart to clean. Though it was a little pricey, you honestly cannot put a price on your safety! If you want the confidence that you are not inhaling hazardous materials or fumes, the added safety of face and eye wear, to be heard while speaking, complete and clear visibility, and total comfort that is reusable and easy to clean... The 3M Ultimate FX Full Face Piece is worth every penny!!

Update: $38 more expensive than 1 month ago. Great mask, adjustable, huge heads beware
Update: love the respirator, got it for fine wood dust and it's great, but that was 1 month ago and the price has risen by at least $38, assuming due to Covid-19. I have gotten it to seat a bit better thanks to the many adjustment options which are great. Huge head people will struggle though and 3m says if that's the case you just have to get a forced air respirator. I have found that I use it a lot more than is strictly necessary which I think is an indicator of how good it is.Original: The seals are large and soft and very comfortable. The airflow keeps the area around your eyes cool and the exhaled air is down and there was no fogging. No issues at all with restricting vision. Like others said I wish I didn't waste money on two other masks and two different goggles, this full face seals so much better and is infinitely more comfortable. The others are now in a box and will probably only be used by friends and family if we're working together.Only issue is the L isn't quite big enough for people with big heads. I'm 6'4" 205 lbs but have a large head and while it seals ok it feels just a bit small and I wish they had an XL. Still, unless you have a truly gigantic head this will work and be the best option if you need a respirator and sealed eye protection.

This is the one - 3M knocked it out of the park with this respirator
Wow. How often these days do you buy a product that actually does everything it's supposed to?Not very freaking often! This respirator is one of those rare products. Was it cheap? No. Is it worth every damned penny I paid for it? Absolutely!I've used this unit for woodworking and metal grinding with N99 filters, painting and using nasty high VOC solvents with VOC cartridges, and working in my crawlspace with the N99s and a full Tyvek. It's just amazing all the time.Great seal and no leakage - ever (even if I haven't shaved in a couple of days). The design is fantastic, it fits great, is super comfortable for long periods, goes on without pinching skin or hair (it's truly a breeze!), and adjusts in seconds. It's easy to breathe with no noticeable restrictions or shortness of breath - even when performing somewhat strenuous activity while wearing it. Working in the crawlspace, I've been upside down and on my back - no issues at all. You can actually forget you are wearing it. This is the first one I've ever owned where that's been the case. But here is the "chef's kiss" with this thing: I've never fogged it up! Not once so far!In summary: don't waste money on crap PPE. If you need to protect yourself, get the right gear from the beginning. Buy quality and only cry once. This is the one.

Best Full Face Respirator I have Tried
As a truck painter, I am required to use a full face respirator for large parts of the day. I wish I could use supplied air respirators when climbing underneath trucks to paint the chassis or over cabs, the extra hose hoses can be more of a hassle than it is worth. In the past I have used a few different full face respirators. For the last year I have been using a 3M 6800 series full face respirator. While it is effective at doing the job, it is not always the most comfortable to wear for extended periods. After reading the reviews and looking at the 3M web site, I decided to give the 3M Ultimate FX full face respirator a try. Wow I am sure glad I did.I cannot believe how much more comfortable the Ultimate FX is. The rubber part that seals the Ultimate FX around the face is very similar to 6800. While the redesigned head cradle and strap setup make a small difference, the biggest difference is in the noise piece. It just seems to be fit better the silicone material it is made of is way more comfortable than the harder rubber or whatever it is that is found in the 6800 noise piece. I can get a much better seal from the Ultimate FX noise piece with less pressure being transferred onto my face. At times I almost forget the noise piece is even there as it feels like it is barely touching my face even though I can visually see there is a good seal being made.In terms of sizing, I found the Ultimate FX to be sized similar to the 6800. Also the disposable shield covers for the 6800 will work on the Ultimate FX. The 6800 tear offs are slightly smaller than the Ultimate FX tear offs but it is close enough that I can at least use up my remaining 6800 tear offs.Pros+ Comfortable+ Doesn't fog up while being usedCons- None yet

This mask is better the the 6000 series in every way.
I have had multiple 3m 6000 full face respirators over the years they were great, comfortable enough, reasonably easy to clean and service and performed well. After my 2nd rebuild on my 2nd 6000 in 10 years and being lazy about putting lens protectors on it when I was spraying and grinding the lens was pretty well shot.I decided to "upgrade" to the FF-400 and was skeptical ... why is it 75$ more I asked...Well the FF-400 is at least 100$ better... probably more...It MUCH more comfortable fit wiseIts cooler, I dont fill it with sweat and condensation...Its field of view is betterIts breaths more easilyIt is better built from better more modern materials.I wouldn't upgrade just to upgrade from a serviceable 6000 series but if you are looking to rebuild your 6000 or upgrade from a worn out 6000 ... SPEND THE EXTRA MONEY and get a FF-400 series. The 6000 was great for its time but the FF-400 series is better in every way.

Good mask, med size fits & bad packaging.
My biggest issue was which size to orde and there isn't much info on it. I'm about 6'1" 192 lbs average build. My heads on the larger side. My ball caps are adjusted on the 2/3 end of the back strap, if that helps. I don't have a wide nose or wide face but a little long maybe - just average all around. I got the medium mask, thinking it would be on the small side. What info I found said it fit 80-90% of people. It's awkward at first but then you realize it fits fine. The way it cups your chin is annoying, but necessary. I'm just used to half face respirators, that's all. Straps are great, they adjust fast. To get it off you release the bottom straps tilting the tabs upward and slide it up off your face. So far I haven't had any issue with my hair getting caught in it. The rubber doesn't grab, that's good. Head piece is comfortable. The nose cup doesn't sit flush to sides of my nose, kinda bummed on that. No fogging so far but only used in hot temps. It "really' needs a release valve at the bottom front so you can let accumulated sweat out. Like on a trumpet spit valave,- push valve open and blow. Not an easy mask to do a pressure check with. You have to put your finger nail behind the top of the nose guard, pull outward and slide up to remove. The 'gently' block the one way valve/flap in front with the soft part of your hand and blow out. This will tell you if its a good fit or not. Then (even with mask still on) slide the cover back on and click into place. I have long chops and a goatee. Which I have shaved 1/4"-1/2" long and the mask does really well getting a seal. Using the p100 pancake filters allows enough flow to be the path of least resistance. Dont be afraid to wear it firm to your face. Great range of view. Speaking diaphragm is so/so. The carrying bag is great for lining a small trash can and offers little protection for the helmet. Many similar ones come with a much needed case. A bag isn't going to do much if it's with you other equipment in a truck. It doesn't even fit properly or close up to keep dust etc out of the bag. It does come with one lens protector if you want to try it first/Mine however did not. It wasn't even packaged at all. It was sent in the flimsy shelf stock box. They didn't even bother putting tape on the lid. It was obvious that it had been opened, losing the paperwork and extra lens protector. I know this because of the condition of the lid. My co-worker's have bought them before and they all came with it. 3M also answered an email saying they did. So thankfully I had a protector to use for it. Which cheats me out of about $6 because they are not cheap. I needed it asap or would've made a real stink about that level of sloppiness and returned it out of principle. It had a cover on the lens and that saved it from being damaged as it seem to have fallen out at some point. That much money for plastic and rubber, surely they can afford a piece of tape? A box would be nice as the postal service (to my knowledge) still provides them for free if you use their services - especially since the Postal Service is who delivered it to my mailbox directly.

Makes all the difference in the world, and the job much easier and safer, even filters out cooking.
I wear contact lenses. Contact lenses and dust don't mix. Even without them, renovations, dust and I don't mix in large quantities, I pay for it down the track. Having filled a standard P2 mask and taken a lungful of gypsum after cutting a large older sheet when renovating, I decided enough was enough, as I had more to cut. I invested in this mask and I would thoroughly recommend it. For starters I had to get up in an old roof, and blower vac out the dust. I could work like I was in an office job, with bits of dust, rubbish from the underside of the tiles falling directly on my face mask, no problems at all, whilst maintaining wearing my contact lenses without any problem. And its so comfortable compared to other masks I have worn, it really is. And it sure beats having safety glasses fog up so you then injure some other part of your body. The only time I had any fog was after giving it a clean with water and cloth down the track and non drying it properly otherwise it was very dry, as there are TWO seals. One around ones mouth and one around the face. One day I walked in and my wife was cooking something and was talking about it - she said can't you smell it? I said no, and I could not. When I took off the mask, only then could I smell the aromatic food she was cooking - so the filtration is really 'that good' - very impressive. If you are renovating, sanding, wear contact lenses or cutting concrete or granite, and you value your lungs, heart, eyesight or not cutting your finger off with the angle grinder as your safety glasses fog up during the cut, or being able to do the job safely, you need one of these in my opinion. Also I found the storage bag to be useful as well. This product is one of the best I have bought in ages, and originally I was worried about spending so much on a mask, but it paid for itself on the first day. Well done 3m, you did a great job with this one, and the filters I used on it 3M Multi Gas Vapor Cartridge, Filter 60926, P100.

Best Mask Ever
I can’t say anything about the test of time since I’ve only had this mask for a week.I feel like it’s saving my life I’m working on project that requires a huge amount of sanding. With a regular mask and glasses I was getting so much sawdust in my eyes and everywhere else. This mask doesn’t fog up, I can breathe, it’s fairly comfortable. I don’t get sawdust in my eyes or my lungs. I can blow it off with the air hose then I’m good to go. I love it it’s the best purchase I have ever made in regards to woodworking. This is also the best safety mask that I have ever owned.

How to find measurements/dimensions to determine whether this mask will fit your face!
It seems insane that 3M does not publish any official sizing chart or descriptive guidelines for selecting the right size mask for your face, and additionally does not offer returns if you get the size wrong. Here are the relevant measurements/dimensions for the SMALL size FF-400, which is labelled as FF-401 (medium is 402 and large is 403).The length of the face hole from top to bottom is about 5in exactly-- this is the distance between somewhere around the middle of your forehead to just below the crease of your bottom lip. Note that the top of the face hole is meant to rest against your forehead, not above it. There is less than 1/2in flexibility in this measurement, so the mask will not sit comfortably if your face is longer than 5in. See CGI face for reference-- this is the measurement of the black line from center of forehead to center of chin. This line shows where the face hole in the mask should be covering.Your nose does not matter for this measurement because it will be sticking out into the depth of the mask and does not affect how the outer edge rests around the sides of your face. However, note that the distance between the bottom edge of the face hole and the top rim of the inner nose/mouth mask is 3in. If the length from the top of the bridge of your nose to the center of your chin is greater than 3in, the mask will not seal properly around your nose/mouth.The overall length of the face hole from top to very bottom edge is less than 6in. The bottom edge is the part of the mask that rests against the very bottom edge of your chin. There is a small divot in the lower lining of the face hole where your chin is supposed to fit-- it is only about 3/4in long x 1/2in deep. This means that if the length of the front of your chin from just below the crease of your bottom lip to the underside of your chin is greater than 1/2in, the mask will not seal properly and you'll be stuck unable to open your jaw at all while wearing it. If your chin pushes forward a lot, you'll have even less room. Finally, the length across the widest part of the mask from side to side is slightly less than 3-1/2in. This is the measurement of the black line from outer edge of eyesocket to outer edge of eyesocket on the CGI face. The inner edges of the face hole MUST clear the edges of your eyesockets in order to seal flush against the sides of your face. If the face hole sits right along the edges of your eyesockets, the depth of the socket will create an air gap and the mask will not seal to your face. Aim for the face hole to rest against your temples. There is less than 1/2in flexibility in this measurement, as the lip of the face hole will fold against your face and stretch slightly, so the mask will not seal properly if the distance between your temples is 4in or greater.Another important measurement that's hard to see in the pictures is the distance between the top of the face hole and the spot where the mask is widest, the spot where it's meant to sit across your eyes/temples. This distance is about 1-1/2 to 2in. This means that the length from the middle of your forehead to the widest part of your eyes (usually just below the top of the bridge) must be less than 2in, or the overall fit will not be comfortable.Note that 3M half-face respirators seem to run larger than these FF-400 full face respirators, so even if a SMALL size half-face mask fits, this full face model will feel tighter around your chin (but not so much your nose) and you may still need to go up a size.Hope this helps!

Great protection; somewhat uncomfortable after 4+ hours
UPDATE: easier cleaning! It fits perfectly inside the EVLA'S UV Sterilizer Box!! So much easier than trying to wipe down every nook and cranny. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07W7HSDPZ/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_taa_kORyFbTVVS9J0I'm an immune-compromised teacher and will be wearing this at work all day. I've done a couple full-day test runs. It is heavy, so my neck aches after a few hours, but I'm sure my muscles will grow. The great things:1. I'm able to wear my headphones and mic on top of this mask and my students say they can hear me clearly (we're doing a hybrid model so I'm talking to kids on-screen and in-class simultaneously). Kids sitting at the back of the class can't hear me too well, but I tell them to put on their headphones and join the Zoom on their chromebooks which solves the problem.2. I feel like I can breathe better in this than a fabric mask and it stays in place SO much better.3. I can wear a fabric headband to keep my hair away from the seal with no added discomfort.4. I feel much safer in this (with the p100 filters I added) than in any fabric or KN-95 mask available. I have a friend at a prestigious medical school and she agrees it's probably my safest option. The down-sides I have probably wouldn't pertain to anyone using this for its true INTENDED use, so they really aren't complaints about the product's quality. It's probably top-notch for what it's meant for! But for others looking to use this to avoid COVID:1. Biggest problem is that the plate at the back of the head starts to really hurt after about 4 hours. I'm going to experiment with padding and will update later.2. It IS ventilated so others are not protected from YOU when you wear this mask. I'm going to try taping some cotton over the front vent to try and filter my exhales a bit; granted, it's still probably better than some of the ill-fitting fabric masks my coworkers / students wear as it does at least force your breath downward (and not out the side gaps that most fabric masks end up having), so theoretically most virus particles you might be releasing would not be expelled at someone's face (but please don't use this mask if you think you are already sick--STAY HOME!). If taping fabric over the front vent causes fogging, some SCUBA mask defogger will probably do the trick. I'll update once I've tried it.3. My neck gets really sore from the wait after a few hours, too, but I'm sure this will improve as my muscles strengthen over time. Get yourself some icy-hot and tylenol if you plan to wear it all day.4. The instructions are obviously written for people who know how to use these, or have someone to instruct them on it. Figuring out what filter would trap something 0.01-0.03 microns took some serious guesswork and research. I went with the magenta 3M 60923 filters.5. Science teachers- it's too bulky to fit into your UV Goggle Sterilizing cabinet, so you've got to hand-wash it. Hey... I could dream. So far I wipe it down with alcohol pads and hope for the best. My med school friend recommends bleach wipes but they've been hard to come by.None of that is why I took away a star. I'm using the mask for COVID protection, which is not the manufacturer's intended use--most of these problems therefore aren't their fault. I deducted one star because it was unclear to me whether or not filters were included (they are not) and looking back at the questions it seems other people were also unclear on this. Also, though it says it's compatible with PPR blowers/systems (which I'm interested in adding) it's unclear in the instructions which PPR blower would work or where to get it. Trying to figure out the right size was also a gamble (but I guessed right). I'm a 5'4" tall female, about 130lbs, and wear the small.
