3M E-A-R Express 311-1115 Corded Pod Earplugs β€” NRR 25 (100 Pairs) Overview

The 3M E-A-R Express 311-1115 corded earplugs are a single-use, pod-style hearing protector rated NRR 25 (ANSI S3.19). Instead of a roll-down foam barrel, each plug uses a pre-shaped foam pod mounted on a firm grip stem, so workers push the plug into place without rolling or compressing it first. That makes them well suited to dusty or oily settings, gloved-hand insertion, and high-turnover crews where a fast, low-mess fit matters more than the absolute highest attenuation. The attached cord keeps both plugs together around the neck between uses and reduces drop-and-lose waste on the floor.

A 25 dB NRR is the laboratory figure printed on the box. Real-world protection is almost always lower because field fit rarely matches the lab. For estimating, OSHA derates the NRR by 7 then halves it β€” (25 βˆ’ 7) Γ· 2 = 9 dB of likely workplace attenuation β€” while NIOSH applies a 25% derate to formable/foam-type plugs (about 19 dB). Either way, plan the buy around the derated number, not the label. Under OSHA 1910.95 hearing conservation, the 85 dBA 8-hour TWA action level triggers a program and the 90 dBA PEL is the compliance ceiling; use the derated value to confirm the plug pulls your exposure under those limits. New to the rating system? Start with what is NRR and how to calculate NRR before standardizing a SKU across a site.

Because the Express is a no-roll pod, fit technique is simpler than foam but still matters β€” seat the pod fully so the foam expands against the canal wall. If your crews already run roll-down foam, compare seal-and-comfort tradeoffs against our foam ear plugs range, or step up the rating with highest-NRR ear plugs. These ship 100 pairs per box and slot into any standard hearing protection program alongside other corded ear plugs.

What It Is Built For

Use case Fit Buyer guidance
Dusty, dirty, or oily work areas Strong fit No-roll pod means workers do not knead foam with grimy fingers β€” insert clean with the grip stem.
Gloved-hand or frequent re-insertion crews Strong fit Push-to-fit stem and attached cord let gloved workers seat plugs fast and keep the pair together between tasks.
Moderate noise 90–95 dBA areas Good fit NRR 25 (β‰ˆ9 dB OSHA-derated, β‰ˆ19 dB NIOSH-derated) covers common shop and line noise; verify against your dosimetry.
Very high noise above ~100 dBA Consider higher NRR or dual protection At extreme exposures step up to higher-rated foam or pair plugs with muffs β€” see highest-NRR options.
All-day continuous wear comfort Moderate fit Pod plugs suit intermittent and high-turnover use; for marathon shifts trial against soft roll-down foam.
Sites needing visible, traceable PPE Good fit Corded design supports drop reduction and quick visual checks; single-use means clean issue each shift.

Earplugs reduce noise, but the labeled NRR is a laboratory number β€” real-world protection is lower. NIOSH derates foam by about 25%, and OSHA estimates protection as (NRR βˆ’ 7) Γ· 2. Under OSHA 29 CFR 1910.95 a hearing-conservation program is required at an 8-hour TWA of 85 dBA. Insert foam plugs correctly (roll, pull the ear up and back, hold) for the rated seal, and use dual protection with earmuffs in very high noise. See how to calculate the NRR you need.

Pros & Cons

Pros
  • No-roll foam pod inserts fast without kneading β€” ideal for dusty, oily, or gloved-hand environments
  • Attached cord keeps the pair together around the neck and cuts drop-and-lose waste
  • NRR 25 (ANSI S3.19) suits common 90–95 dBA shop and production noise
  • Grip stem gives consistent push-to-fit insertion across high-turnover crews
  • Bulk 100-pair box lowers per-pair cost for site-wide hearing programs
  • Single-use hygiene β€” clean plug issued each shift, no cleaning protocol needed
Cons
  • NRR 25 is mid-range; very high-noise areas need higher-rated plugs or dual protection
  • Real-world attenuation is lower than the label β€” roughly 9 dB OSHA-derated
  • Single-use generates more waste than reusable flanged plugs over time
  • Pre-shaped pod fits a narrower range of canals than fully formable roll-down foam

How It Compares

Within 3M's corded plug lineup, the E-A-R Express 311-1115 (NRR 25) trades a little attenuation for the speed of a no-roll pod. If you want higher attenuation from a corded foam barrel, the 3M 1270 reusable corded multi-flange (NRR 25) offers the same rating in a washable, reusable flanged plug β€” better for crews that prefer to re-wear rather than discard. For maximum corded attenuation in a roll-down foam, a higher-NRR corded foam plug seals deeper but requires clean-hand rolling that the Express avoids. The closest pull-and-place sibling is the push-in style 3M E-A-R Push-Ins line, which shares the no-roll concept at a slightly higher NRR. Frequently Asked Questions

What is the NRR of the 3M E-A-R Express 311-1115?

It is rated NRR 25 dB under ANSI S3.19. That is the laboratory figure on the box; real-world protection is lower. OSHA's estimate derates it to (25 βˆ’ 7) Γ· 2 β‰ˆ 9 dB, and NIOSH's 25% foam derate gives roughly 19 dB.

Are these earplugs corded or uncorded?

Corded. Each pair is joined by an attached cord so the plugs hang together around the neck between uses, reducing drop-and-lose waste on the floor.

Are the 311-1115 reusable or single-use?

They are single-use (disposable). Issue a fresh pair each shift; there is no cleaning protocol. For a reusable corded alternative, see the 3M 1270 reusable corded multi-flange plug.

How many pairs come in a box?

100 pairs per box, making them suited to site-wide hearing conservation programs and high-turnover crews.

What does 'pod' or 'Express' style mean versus roll-down foam?

Instead of rolling and compressing a foam barrel before insertion, the Express uses a pre-shaped foam pod on a firm grip stem. You push it into place, so workers never knead foam with dirty or gloved hands.

Is NRR 25 enough for my noise level?

It typically covers common 90–95 dBA shop and production noise once derated. Confirm with your dosimetry: subtract the derated value (about 9 dB OSHA-style) from your measured 8-hour TWA and check it falls below 85 dBA. Use our how-to-calculate-NRR guide to size it.

How do these help me meet OSHA 1910.95?

OSHA 1910.95 sets an 85 dBA action level and a 90 dBA PEL over an 8-hour TWA. Apply the derated NRR to your measured exposure to verify the plug pulls you under those limits; the standard's hearing-conservation guide explains the full program requirements.

Why is real protection lower than the NRR on the box?

Lab NRR assumes a near-perfect fit that field conditions rarely match. That is why OSHA and NIOSH apply derates. Plan your purchase around the derated number, not the printed 25 dB.

Are these good for dusty or oily work?

Yes β€” that is the Express's strength. Because you do not roll the foam, workers avoid pressing grime into the plug, making them a strong fit for dusty, oily, or gloved-hand environments.

How do I insert the 311-1115 correctly?

Hold the grip stem, pull the top of the ear up and back to straighten the canal, and push the pod fully in until the foam seats and expands against the canal wall. A shallow seat lowers attenuation.

How does the Express compare to 3M's reusable flanged plugs?

The Express is a single-use no-roll pod at NRR 25; the 3M 1270 reusable corded multi-flange is also NRR 25 but washable and re-wearable. Choose the Express for speed and hygiene, the 1270 to cut single-use waste.

Where do these fit in a hearing-protection program?

They slot into any standard hearing protection lineup as a fast-fit corded foam option. For higher-noise areas, step up to highest-NRR ear plugs or pair plugs with muffs for dual protection.

Easy to use. Tops in effectiveness
Best for noise reduction. Simple to use. Much better than the cylinder versions that need to be rolled for effective insertion.

Great earplugs but only 4 pair not 5 as advertised.
These are exactly what I ordered. These are the best ear plugs I have ever worn. Year after year getting my hear tested and I have had very little change over the past 25 yrs. And the change is mostly due to age. I was very disappointed that it was advertised 5 pair and only get 4. Which is false advertisement. You should really change that or send the 5th pair in which advertised. Would have gave a 5 star but only 4 because of that.

I love the handle, so I don't have to roll up regular foam earplugs.
These work great. I love the handle, so I don't have to roll up regular foam earplugs. I wish they would come with skin-colored handles, because them when I go out dancing. The music is always too loud for me, so these help a lot. I cut off the strings, so I don't look too ridiculous on the dance floor!

Comfort under other esr protection.
Small and comfortable. I like the lanyard so I can take one or both out temporarily and not have to stow them. The stems make insertion easy and sanitary and short enough that it fits comfortably under full ear covers for double baffling protection. They clean up easily and fit into a small case I carry for them. I am very pleased with this purchase.

Product not as displayed
I don’t normally post negative reviews but here I go. Just like another reviewer I too got 4 pod plugs instead of 5 like in the picture. I thought maybe it was an isolated incident. But no. Picture is of a box that has 5 pod plugs. THIS IS FALSE ADVERTISING. I’m not happy about this. The only reason I’m not returning is because I really need them now. I will 1 star this, not because it’s a bad product but because the seller isn’t selling what they claim to be selling. They need to fix this. This review will surely hurt their business until they do.

ALMOST the best
I have tried almost every noise reduction gizmo available on Amazon and these are better than almost all the others in reducing the impact of the incredible loud music played for an hour by my Zumba instructor. What's also great about them is that they are connected so you can wear them around your neck going to and from the noisy event you need them for. That way, they are easier NOT to lose. However, as good as these are, the wax balls are better in cutting sound down to a manageable level. The only problem with the wax ones is that they stick to your hair - a real problem if you're not careful putting them on and/or taking them out

Man I've been looking for cheap earplugs that work. Why are they so hard to find? I tried a bunch, these are the best for DYI projects. Even with gloves or dirty hands you can put these in because they have a plastic handle used for insertion. You just push them in and get good sound reduction. To get the same sound reduction from regular ear plugs, you have to spend the time to smash them down and insert them carefully. With these you just push the in like a cork. Simple! An added bonus is the cord. When you take them out they just hang around your neck so you don't lose them.
