Best For: corded reusable flanged hearing protection at NRR 25 dB with a retention cord.

Not For: non-noise hazards, or noise that earplugs alone can't bring under ~85 dBA (add earmuffs).

Bottom Line: a solid corded reusable flanged plug at NRR 25 dB β€” the cord earns its keep on jobs where dropped plugs get lost.

3M 90586 Corded Earplugs Overview

The 3M 90586 Corded Earplugs are corded reusable flanged ear plugs from 3M, rated NRR 25 dB. The permanent cord keeps the pair together so a plug isn’t lost, and lets you hang them around your neck between tasks. Start with our hearing-protection guide and what NRR means, then confirm the noise level you’re protecting against.

The 3M 90586 belong to the corded ear plugs range and the NRR 25 ear plugs group. They are reusable and washable across many shifts; for the trade-offs see foam vs reusable ear plugs.

What NRR 25 dB Means

NRR is a laboratory rating; NIOSH suggests derating it for real-world use. Here is how NRR 25 dB lines up with common environments (always confirm with a noise survey):

Environment Approx. noise Fit for NRR?
Power tools / workshop (~95 dBA) ~86 dBA after derating Good fit
Heavy equipment / construction (~100 dBA) ~91 dBA after derating Add earmuffs
Manufacturing / plant floor (~90 dBA) ~81 dBA after derating Good fit
Firearms / impact (140 dB peak) Impulse noise Add earmuffs (dual)

Who Should Buy the 3M 90586?

Buy them if you want reusable flanged hearing protection with a retention cord at NRR 25 dB. Consider another plug if you need a different level or style: compare E-A-R Classic 311-1110, E-A-R UltraFit, VP311-4106 Neons. For the highest ratings see highest-NRR ear plugs.

Hearing protection only works when worn correctly for the full exposure. The NRR is a laboratory rating; real-world attenuation is typically lower, so OSHA and NIOSH recommend derating it when estimating protection. For very high noise β€” or whenever earplugs alone can’t bring exposure under about 85 dBA β€” wear them with earmuffs (dual protection). The 3M 90586 reduces noise; it does not eliminate it or protect against non-noise hazards.

Best Applications

Industrial & construction noise

Power tools, plants and construction work at sustained high noise suit a corded NRR 25 plug you won’t lose between tasks.

Shooting & range use

For range and shooting use, pair a high NRR with muffs for impulse noise.

Helpful Hearing-Protection Guides

3M 90586 Frequently Asked Questions

What is the NRR of the 3M 90586?

The 3M 90586 are rated NRR 25 dB (EPA-labeled per ANSI S3.19). Real-world protection is usually lower, so NIOSH recommends derating the NRR when estimating exposure.

Are the 3M 90586 corded?

Yes. The permanent cord links the pair so you don't lose a plug, and lets you wear them around your neck between tasks β€” the cord does not change the NRR.

Are the 3M 90586 reusable or single-use?

They are reusable and washable across many shifts.

How do I insert the 3M 90586?

To fit them, push the pre-molded flanges gently into the canal until sealed; no rolling needed. A proper seal is what delivers the rated protection.

Can I wash the 3M 90586?

Yes β€” rinse the flanges with mild soap and water, dry, and reuse.

Are the 3M 90586 metal-detectable?

No. For food or pharma lines where a lost plug must be detectable, see our metal-detectable ear plugs.

What size are the 3M 90586?

They are pre-sized flanges (check sizing if offered).

What noise levels suit NRR 25?

NRR 25 dB suits common industrial noise once derated; for very high or impulse noise, add earmuffs for dual protection. See what NRR means.

Do corded ear plugs reduce the NRR vs uncorded?

No. The cord is only for retention; the plug body and seal determine attenuation.

Are the 3M 90586 NIOSH/EPA labeled?

Yes β€” NRR 25 dB is EPA-labeled under ANSI S3.19. WC Safety sells authentic 3M hearing protection through legitimate channels.

Can I buy the 3M 90586 in bulk or by the case?

Yes. Use the Request a Quote option for case and dispenser pricing on volume orders.

Should I choose ear plugs or ear muffs?

Plugs suit tight spaces, heat and all-day wear; muffs are faster on/off. Many high-noise jobs use both β€” see ear plugs vs ear muffs.

Try these if foam earplugs scrunch up or fall out of your ears
The 3M reusable earplugs block out noticeably more sound and are more comfortable for me than foam plugs. While foam plugs help, they scrunch up even during careful insertion, leading to an imperfect seal and/or excessive pressure against the delicate skin of the ear canal by the doubled-over plug. 3M's plug has a triple-flange cone shape that can't double over, and it adapts to various sizes and shapes of ear canals. It is made of a flexible gel-type plastic that minimizes pressure and is easy to clean.Read the instructions and use safe practices to protect your inner ear. Keep your mouth wide open while you insert and remove ear plugs so air pressure can equilibrate via the tiny Eustachian tube that connects your middle ear to the back of your throat. Clean these with soap and water after each use, and make sure they are completely dry before reuse, since a constant damp environment promotes the growth of fungus.Prepackaged foam earplugs are still helpful for one-time use, but the 3M plugs are now my staple for frequent use at home.

Way better than foam
My favorite semi-disposable ear plugs. At my jobs (event venue stagehand & parks laborer), I deal with a lot of loud noise and always carry ear protection with me. I love ear muffs, but they don't work with my glasses (regular and/or safety), and are a pain to carry unless you leave them on the top of your head. The little case is handy, though most of the time they end up wadded up in a pocket. After a few months out in the summer sun, one pair started getting a little hard and didn't fit as well, so I ordered a new pair and retired those. I have misplaced/lost a set or two of these ear plugs, but at this price point, it's ok.

The work well and are reusable
Ear protection is really important. My mower and vacuum are very loud. I use the disposable kind too but these are nice because you can reuse them. The spongy flesh colored disposable kind are somewhat better in that they cut out even more noise. But these are also very effective and do not pop out as some disposable plugs do.

You will hear NOTHING!
These block all the noises to which I am exposed, including seven rifle volleys on a military memorial rifle squad. I have more expensive ear plugs but these do the job without near the expense.

Too big
They seemed too big, and I had to push hard to get them into my ears, and then they caused pain. Even with that, they kept falling out of my ears. I do have small ear canals and have to use the smallest size tips with earbuds.

Not for smaller ear canals
There do not fit my ears. If I push them in far enough to block noise they are painful. So I would say they are for large ear canals.

Fit great, appears to block background noise well.
I purchased these for my medical school exams I take because I become distracted during long exams when other students are shifting and shuffling nervously. I have previously used foam ear plugs but I have small ears so they sometimes get pushed out of my ear canal when they expand. This pair looked promising because I thought the three cones would allow it to fit better. I was correct, they fit great. They are good for blocking background noise. Please be sure to PULL YOUR EAR UP AND AWAY from your head when placing these. Not doing so will make them useless.

Great prodcut, great price
These are great for the price. I use them at the fire department to protect my hearing from the noises we deal with such as fire alarms and chain saws. The case makes them easy to carry and keep clean while I work. They reduce the sounds to the point there is no discomfort, and other guys I work with have now purchased these
