We had our old 9v smoke detector for 20 years and the other day I thought I turned the electric range burner off and it was on high. I went in the other room and didn't know anything til I smelt the pan burning. I was steaming some broccoli and the water boiled off and whatever turned black where the water was. The pan was one of them copper chef ceramic coated square pans that was great up until then. They are only good up to 500 degrees then you loose the not stick quality. Anyway, the smoke detector was going off but is was so low you could not hear it unless you were near it. I am glad to find out that before there was a fire I didn't get control of in the house. When I seen these newer ones with the 10 year lithium battery I thought, wow, it pays for itself in batteries alone before the life of it is up and you don't have to change them every year.

I was told that these alarms were the best to get. I did not know when I ordered that the alarms I had were disabled probably because they kept chirping. So I was glad I bought this. It won't work until you put the back on and I had a hard time doing it. But I got it finally, tested it, and it works. It will work for 10 years which is a long time. It does not fit on my old wall fixture so I just set it on a table. I will take it with me if I move. It is supposed to be the most sensitive alarm. It is bright green and looks nice. Wish I Learned About Ionization Smoke Alarms Before Buying
I had 12+ year old smoke alarms in the house and wanted to replace them since they recommend replacing every 10 years. What I did not realize is that these are ionization smoke alarms, which means they're more effective for detecting flames versus smoldering fires -- AND, the majority of house fires start off as the smoldering variety. So in tests, this type of smoke alarm takes much longer to alarm and are actually banned in some European countries and several US states. Whether the bans are partially due to the radioactive material present in ionization smoke alarms or due to them not being as effective of a smoke detector, I'm not sure, but it appears there's more of a recommendation to either have both ionization and photoelectric smoke alarms in your house -- or to use combination photoelectric/ionization alarms.So while I have not had any issues yet with these alarms after about 9 months, I'm actually surprised that this type of smoke alarm is still available to the public when it seems that combination alarms or even just going photoelectric would be safer since most house fires start off smoldering. I'm of course annoyed to have spent $100 on 6x alarms before discovering this, but oh well.It's 2024, not 1970, yet somehow we don't have better solutions to preventing house fires early and aren't able to rely on smoke detectors in our homes?I would gladly pay $50-100 per alarm for a smoke alarm that did what it was supposed to do and had a great reputation (independent testing that passed upwards of 95% of realistic test scenarios in a reasonable timeframe where a smoke alarm should alarm). After dozens of hours of research though, I've just been left a bit surprised that there aren't better options available and it feels like we as consumers are just forced to pick something and pay whatever price, knowing that it may or may not function correctly or last. Paying for peace-of-mind that may not exist essentially.If you buy this model smoke detector, know that it's not the full answer to preventing house fires. You'll want to also buy some photoelectric smoke detectors, or combination photoelectric/ionic detectors and mix them around your house. You'll also want some carbon monoxide detectors in the bedrooms, hallway and possibly a few other locations in the house. I really wish it was easier for something this important, but until there's more regulation or laws it seems it's up to each one of us to know what we're buying.I have to rate this alarm 3-stars because it did not fully solve my problem and I feel around $20 is actually kind of expensive for an ionization alarm.
