Kidde B0CB9GFZ9M Basic Fire Extinguisher — Single-Use 5-B:C (Disposable) Overview

The Kidde B0CB9GFZ9M Basic Fire Extinguisher is a single-use, disposable unit rated 5-B:C. That rating covers two of the three common household fire classes: Class B flammable liquids (gasoline, oil, grease, paint, solvents) and Class C energized electrical equipment. It uses a sodium-bicarbonate (BC) dry chemical agent — the same dry-powder family used to knock down liquid and electrical fires fast. Per NFPA 10 guidance, BC-rated units are a targeted tool for those hazards rather than an all-purpose extinguisher.

Note what the rating does not include: there is no Class A rating, so this is not the right primary choice for wood, paper, fabric, or trash fires. If you want one extinguisher to cover ordinary combustibles plus liquids and electrical, see our abc dry chemical extinguishers instead, and read fire extinguisher classes explained to confirm A:B:C vs. B:C fits your space.

Because the B0CB9GFZ9M is non-rechargeable, you replace it rather than refill it after any discharge or once the pressure gauge leaves the charged band. That makes it a cost-effective secondary, grab-and-go extinguisher for a car trunk, garage shelf, boat, workshop, or utility room where flammable-liquid and electrical risks dominate. Households that want a refillable unit they can service should compare the rechargeable extinguishers; for a single whole-home pick, our best fire extinguisher for home guide and the broader best fire extinguishers 2026 roundup walk through the trade-offs. Browse all options in fire extinguishers.

The title does not state an agent weight, mounting bracket, or UL classification number, so we don't list those specs — confirm the exact net charge weight, dimensions, and any included strap or bracket on the Amazon listing before you buy. For full-coverage layered protection, pair a BC unit near liquid/electrical hazards with an ABC unit elsewhere, and keep an escape plan and fire escape ladders on upper floors.

What It Is Built For

Use case Fit Buyer guidance
Car, truck, or boat trunk Strong fit 5-B:C targets fuel, oil, and electrical fires common to vehicles; compact single-use form is easy to stow. Confirm a mounting strap or bracket on the listing — it is not stated in the title.
Garage or workshop flammable-liquid backup Strong fit Ideal secondary unit where gasoline, solvents, and powered tools are present. Pair with an ABC unit for wood/paper coverage the 5-B:C rating omits.
Whole-home primary extinguisher Weak fit No Class A rating means it is not designed for wood, paper, or fabric fires. Choose an A:B:C rechargeable from our abc dry chemical extinguishers collection for primary home use.
Kitchen grease and cooking-oil fires Limited fit Class B covers grease, but deep-fryer/cooking-oil fires are best matched by a K-class unit; see our kitchen k class extinguishers. Single-use means replace after any discharge.
Refillable, serviceable unit you keep long-term Poor fit This is disposable and cannot be recharged. If you want to refill after use or annual service, choose a model from rechargeable extinguishers instead.

Match the extinguisher to the fire class: A (ordinary combustibles), B (flammable liquids), C (energized electrical), K (cooking oils and fats). A multipurpose ABC dry-chemical extinguisher covers A, B and C. Mount it where it is accessible, check the pressure gauge monthly, and service or replace it per NFPA 10. An extinguisher is for small, incipient fires only — if the fire grows or the room fills with smoke, evacuate and call 911. Browse fire extinguishers.

Frequently Asked Questions

What fires is the Kidde B0CB9GFZ9M rated for?

It is rated 5-B:C, which covers Class B flammable-liquid fires (gasoline, oil, grease, paint, solvents) and Class C energized-electrical fires. It does not carry a Class A rating, so it is not intended for wood, paper, or fabric fires. See fire extinguisher classes explained to confirm the rating fits your space.

Is this extinguisher rechargeable or single-use?

It is single-use and disposable. Once it has been discharged, or once the pressure gauge drops out of the charged zone, you replace the whole unit rather than refilling it. If you want a refillable model, compare our rechargeable extinguishers collection.

Does the 5-B:C rating cover Class A (wood, paper, fabric) fires?

No. The title states 5-B:C only, with no Class A number, so it is not designed as a primary defense for ordinary combustibles. For whole-home coverage that includes Class A, choose an A:B:C unit from our abc dry chemical extinguishers collection.

What does 5-B:C actually mean?

The '5-B' is a UL Class B size rating indicating the approximate square footage of flammable-liquid fire the unit can handle, and the 'C' confirms the agent is safe on energized electrical equipment. The 'C' carries no numerical size. Our fire extinguisher classes explained guide breaks down the rating system.

What is the extinguishing agent?

It is a BC dry chemical (sodium bicarbonate) extinguisher, the dry-powder family used to suppress flammable-liquid and electrical fires. This is consistent with the B:C-only rating and is why it is not rated for Class A combustibles.

Where should I place this extinguisher?

It works best as a secondary, grab-and-go unit near flammable-liquid and electrical hazards — a car or boat trunk, a garage shelf, a workshop, or a utility room. For broader placement guidance see best fire extinguisher for home.

Can I use it on a kitchen grease fire?

Class B includes grease, so a small grease fire is within its scope, but deep-fryer and cooking-oil fires are best matched by a dedicated K-class unit. For cooking-oil protection, see our kitchen k class extinguishers.

How much agent does it hold and what does it weigh?

The listing title does not state a net agent weight, so we don't publish one to avoid giving you an inaccurate figure. Confirm the exact charge weight and overall dimensions on the Amazon product page before purchase.

Does it come with a mounting bracket or strap?

A bracket or strap is not stated in the title, so we can't confirm one is included. Check the Amazon listing's photos and specs; if you need guaranteed mounting hardware, verify it there before you order.

Is one of these enough for my whole house?

No. Because it lacks a Class A rating, it should not be your only home extinguisher. Use it as a targeted backup near liquid/electrical hazards and pair it with an A:B:C unit elsewhere — see best fire extinguishers 2026 for a layered setup.

How is this different from the Kidde vehicle 10-B:C model?

Both are single-use BC units, but the vehicle model is rated 10-B:C versus this one's 5-B:C, giving it a larger Class B capacity. This 5-B:C unit is a compact lower-capacity option. Compare both and others in our fire extinguishers collection.

How long is it good for and when do I replace it?

As a disposable unit, replace it after any discharge or whenever the pressure gauge falls out of the charged band — and follow the manufacturer's date guidance on the label. Keep it accessible and pair upper-floor placement with fire escape ladders as part of your overall fire plan.

I bought this small fire extinguisher after we had a little fire accident at home that really scared me. Thankfully, I haven’t had to use it (and hopefully never will!), but I feel much safer knowing it’s there just in case. The size is perfect for a home or office, compact enough to keep in the kitchen without taking up space, but it still feels solid and reliable. It fits nicely in a cabinet or corner, and it doesn’t look bulky or industrial. It gives me real peace of mind to have it close by. I’m very happy I found something that fits in my kitchen so well in both size and appearance. Hopefully I’ll never need to test it, but I’m glad I have it!

The Kidde Basic Fire Extinguisher (5‑BC) is a straightforward, single‑use safety tool built for quick, intuitive operation in home or office environments. The plastic handle and lever are lightweight yet sturdy, making the extinguisher easy to grip and deploy without adding unnecessary bulk. The instructions are printed clearly in both English and Spanish, supported by simple visual icons that make the four‑step process easy to follow even in a high‑stress moment. The pressure gauge is large and easy to read at a glance, and the safety pin removes cleanly without sticking or wobbling. In a controlled discharge scenario, the extinguisher produced a strong, steady stream with good reach, maintaining pressure consistently throughout use. Its 5‑BC rating covers flammable liquids and electrical fires—the two most common hazards in kitchens, garages, and workspaces. For anyone looking to meet essential fire‑safety standards with a reliable, no‑frills unit, this Kidde extinguisher offers dependable performance and clear, user‑friendly design.

I bought the Kidde 5-B:C Fire Extinguisher for my home and office, and I’m extremely satisfied with the quality and peace of mind it provides. It’s a compact yet powerful extinguisher designed primarily for Class B (flammable liquids) and Class C (electrical fires), making it perfect for kitchens, garages, and workplaces. Pros: ✅ Lightweight & Compact: At just 3.2 lbs., it’s easy to store in small spaces and grab in an emergency. ✅ Simple Operation: The safety pin and trigger mechanism are straightforward, making it easy to use even under stress. ✅ USCG Approved: A great option for boats as well as home and office use. ✅ Includes Strap Bracket: The mounting bracket keeps it secure, whether in a kitchen, garage, or vehicle. ✅ Trusted Brand: Kidde is a well-known name in fire safety, and this extinguisher meets all expected quality standards. Cons: 🔹 Limited to B & C Fires: This extinguisher is not rated for Class A fires (wood, paper, fabric), so it's best paired with an ABC-rated extinguisher for full coverage. 🔹 Single-Use Design: Like many small fire extinguishers, this one is not rechargeable, meaning once discharged, it must be replaced. Final Verdict: For anyone looking for a compact, effective, and affordable fire extinguisher for their home, office, car, or boat, this Kidde 5-B:C model is an excellent choice. It’s lightweight, easy to use, and includes a mounting bracket for added convenience. While it’s not suitable for Class A fires, it’s a must-have for kitchens, garages, and electrical areas. I’ll be buying more to place around my home and workspace! Highly recommended! 🔥🚒

They came quickly and mounted on the wall easily. Just hope there isn’t a fire to test out how they work on a fire.

Safety first, ha! Well, it is a fire extinguisher alright. How well does it work...I dunno. I just buy em and put them in the house and garage. Well, I have used Kidde extinguishers before and they never failed me. Good size for the vehicle or where space is an issue. This will probably put out most small fires if you get to it early.

We've done a lot of home renovation projects the past 18 months and are quite proud of the work we've done and the improvements we've made. We got to talking and said it would be such a shame to have a tragedy like a fire ruin all the hard work we've done. We decided to get two fire extinguishers, a larger one right outside the back door, and a smaller one to keep in the kitchen. This one is the smaller of the two. It was a great price, less than $15. It's a nice size without being TOO big for a smaller or older person. Comes with a nice warranty, as well as a bracket to hang it. I was able to hang it in an easy-to-grab location under the sink just inside the cabinet door. We now feel like we can put out a small fire, god forbid, whether it starts from cooking oil, an open flame, or even electrical.
