They work!
I work at a coffee roastery and the roaster and bagger can be extremely loud. Though my work does provide ear protection, they didn't work that well due to normal wear and tear/past workers stretching them out. I bought my own pair to mitigate this and pair it with the Loop earbuds. Together it basically blocked all sound. Wearing them by themselves only dampens the sound by 50%-60% which is still considered safe.My only issue is I do work front facing as a barista because the space is shared with coffee production and front facing employees. I did find myself having to take them off to hear. But hey, they work! I am getting pretty good at reading people's lips now though. They are adjustable and fit around my ears nicely. My only issue is it is a little uncomfortable around the corners of my head because my head isn't perfecly round. The headband over time does dig into my head. I'd say this was worth the money and I'm happy knowing I won't be deaf at a young age. ;)

Tough to judge things like this from reviews
(Update: I foolishly lost these and ordered a different set as a replacement, They got very high marks and I thought I had found a really good, and cheaper, set, that were designed for gun-shooting practice. Started out on the lawnmower and after 15 minutes my ears were rattling and it was almost painful.I went back into the garage and nearly tore it apart looking for these. Found them under a tarp, put them on, and did another 2 1/2 hours of mowing with no discomfort. One thing I have found is that it is essential to move them around a bit and change the adjustment. It makes a huge difference in noise level even with the difference between smiling while wearing them and not smiling. At least for me there is a perfect placement, and when you find it they do a great job. Just avoid low-hanging branches on fruit trees. They can mess everything up.)Every person's hearing, and sensitivity to sounds, is different. I really dislike loud noises, so I read tons of reviews and decided I needed to decide for myself. As much as I like reading reviews, so many of the different hearing protectors sounded great, to many, but then not so good to others. These seemed to have a common positive theme, so I figured give it a chance. The price is reasonable, but I really didn't care about that as much as would this be comfortable on my fairly large head - my dad was 6'7" and even though I am way shorter I can wear his hats - and reduce the noise level to being tolerable. So I picked up my new zero-turn mower - Maverick HD, which I absolutely love - and popped these on and set off for a spin.A full 3.5 hours later I finished cutting what was between knee and waist-high grass. That mower is a beast, but pretty loud as well. These ear muffs passed the test with flying colors. I did need to slightly adjust them from time-to-time because even being slightly off the noise level increased noticeably. But when they were on correctly I found it very tolerable. Better was the fact I could wear these 3 1/2 hours straight. I hate things pressed against me anywhere. I don't even wear jewelry or a wristwatch. But I wore these for that long without a complaint. So even though reviews regarding sound levels and comfort levels are highly subjective, at least for me these worked great. Just ran the mower for a couple of hours three days ago and once again I didn't even notice the ear muffs. That is a very good thing. Looks like I got both the mower and the ear muffs about as perfect as I could hope for.

Great Noise Reduction
My cheapest pair of ear muffs is hiding in the shop, so I decided to continue the 'better noise reduction' campaign and got these. My hearing is failing, so I take care to protect it as best I can---got to last a bit longer! These have a nice snug fit and terrific noise reduction. I can still communicate with people directly if I pay attention, but I feel quite comfortable operating shop and yard equipment at the newly reduced noise level. They cover my medium-sized ears nicely and have a snug fit over my facial hair that does not appear to bleed noise. The price seems fair and they appear well made.

Good item, glad I found it
This arrived today and I tried it on. It fits - it actually fits my smallish head better than I thought it would! The noise reduction is incredible. My hearing is excellent but I could hear very little/practically nothing while wearing this; so now when my husband turns up the TV I don't need to listen, ha-ha! I want to keep my good hearing so I will also wear it cutting the grass and whacking weeds etc. My one complaint is it is not as quite as comfortable as I would wish. I would like the band that goes over one's head to be softer or padded somehow. Otherwise, I think it will certainly do the job.

The ear cups seal very nicely to your head.
Wow the comfort! Its like they were just made for my head. I am a size 7 3/4 and they fit perfectly. I could have saved a few hundred dollars if I would have purchased these first, but oh well thats the way the ball bounces. They cut out the sound so well, and reminds me of the clear armour safety muff.Update 1/21/16 1PM They create a vacuum so your ears are sealed in the earcups so you should be careful taking them off so as not to put pressure on your eardrums. I have ears that go outside the 2.5 ear pad range , but my ears are sealed up and I don't feel any crimping. It seems they are air tight. Alot like with the Clear Armour muff its hard to dislodge the muffs unless you break the seal ( they are snug , not so much making a vacuum) , so it helps to take any play you have in the headband, and make them even more snug . I'm wearing the red X4 28 NR as I type this.I was so impressed I got the whole line. Buy these muffs, you wont regret it.Update 2/20/16, I had a moment where I couldn't decide what I wanted to do , so sent these back...but breaking down how the remind me of the Epitome Peltor 105 H10A and Clear Armor... I have got wayyyyyy to many Earmuffs. But had to have these again. Plus with the vacuum the make, they sleep good too. The headband along with muffs conform to big heads like mine. Rest assured they will fit and you'll love the comfort and want to wear them....a lot!Received again on 2/22/16

Noise suppression
These work great. First used then at NASCAR Bristol. One of the loudest tracks ever. I was quite comfortable with the noise level. And they fit good. They donβt fold up as small as others but the noise suppression is most important

Comfortable noise reduction
These things are as good as in ear plugs which have a habit of falling out or losing their seal. Perfect for chainsaw, log splitter and mowing. They are adjustable and fit comfortably over a ball cap. I'm planning to buy another pair for use in my wood shop. Quality, comfortable noise reduction!

Excellent! Just as good as the best earplugs, but more comfortable.
I have the X3A because I felt it was the best compromise on price and performance, and suspect the X5A is probably tighter so less comfortable. The X4A is more compact but not quite as good on noise, if you look up the specs. So I went with X3A.Comfort: 5/5. It has room for my above average sized ears without them touching the inside of the cups. The padding is snug and soft and smooth.Noise: 5/5. This is just like wearing good earplugs. I can still hear a bathroom fan, someone speaking at normal volume in a crowded room, and myself typing right now. But everything is attenuated to a comfortable level. They are better than your average shooting earmuffs.Construction: 5/5. These seem durable and the adjustment does as well. That is a major complaint I see about the other earmuffs on Amazon.Update 5/20/21: If you need these for loud machine noise, probably go for the larger ones instead.

Great fit
I hesitated buying these because they were a little on the expensive side. I had previously bought inexpensive earmuff Style ear protection covers from various box stores and hardware stores. I have to wear them frequently but always found them to be tight, a poor fit for the side of my head and ears and uncomfortable for long-term use. The poor service life of the inexpensive brands along with the uncomfortable fit convinced me to try something a little better quality and consequently more expensive. These 3M brand seems to be the right choice. They could use a little more room around the ears but they are far better fit and quieter than the box store brands I have bought in the past. I use this hearing protection in my shop where I do a lot of loud metal work and I also use them when I'm on my tractor with the bush hog or mower deck attachments. These also work well when using other yard and field equipment. Seems to be a good purchase I've only had them a little while but they work well and at this point I would recommend them.
