Well as all things eventually die, so did my original Hornell Speedglas. The auto darkening started acting up and new batteries didn't help. Upon farther investigation, I realized it was 30 yrs. old. That "ol boy" will hang in my shop till I'm gone. Sooo, I had ta get another one. The new Kid here is pretty darn nice. It's really something what ya can do with 3D modeling. Anyway, I can only hope 3M can come close to what the "Sweeds" had created for longevity. Only time will tell. Other than that, it's comfortable, light, responsive and looks cool. Cost?? Just ta throw numbers out there, my orig. was $400.00 (fixed shade and sensitivity only) This one, $205 w/some bells and whistles.

Although I'm only an occasional welder I like the ability to vary the shade and response to dark sensitivity. The clarity and viewing area is outstanding and will put my other helmets to shame.My only drawback is that I forget to turn it on because of infrequent use. It has a minimum shade built in so I have never been flash burned because of my failure to turn it on. It was like being the subject of a close camera flash with no damage. I do know what it's like to be flash burned with a cheap helmet. A good helmet like this will save a Dr. visit.This is the least expensive helmet on the market. Buy this one first and you will never desire another. You will also not waste any money on cheaper helmets, like I did.

Excellent high quality welding helmet. This product met every expectation I had and works really well. It has a nice knob actuated head strap easy to operate even with gloves on. I opted for this model over the more expensive one due to the fact that I'm using it in my personal shop not a production facility. But from my understanding the biggest difference between this model and the higher priced on is it only has 2 optical sensors to detect your arc. Unless you are welding in a lot of confined areas and difficult position welds this is not an issue. One of the 2 sensors will always be able to "see" the arc for anyone doing conventional welds, (flat, table top, overhead, etc.)

Speedglas was my first auto helmet 18 years ago, and it was a dream! After being dropped off a truck, time for a replacement. I have used plenty of newer helmets, including Harbor Freight, but decided to return to the "best" and ordered Speedglas. What a ripoff! This current helmet is a piece of junk. It tends to"blink" blinding you at random times. Tried all the controls, different positions, and different machines. The sensor is just not very well made.

High Quality with a fatal flaw
Context of use: 5 hours of continuous use, one day per week, 8 weeks for a total of 40 hours, mostly tig welding at 50 - 100 amps.The lens: Quick and Reliable arc detection with no failures to darken to date, 5 dark shades cover a wide range of amperage settings, sensitivity settings are cool but don't affect much, the delay settings are A POINTLESS FLAW.A delay choice of 2 milliseconds or 4 milliseconds is POINTLESS. Both settings can leave you staring at metal glowing as bright as a light bulb inches from your eyes. This is my biggest gripe with the lens and why I would not buy it having known how much of a problem this would become.A delay choice of 4 milliseconds or 50 milliseconds would better protect the users eyes from over heated metal and electrodes.The mask itself is very light, it protrudes from the face more than desired, it is wider than necessary, and the head gear is abysmal.The headgear is designed for easy set up but not to be comfortable or stay in place. There is also no latch to keep the mask up when not in front of the face. It will constantly fall back down in front of your face unless the knobs located at the temples are over tightened; in which case it is neither comfortable or can be swung down with the flick of the neck.Conclusion: the uncomfortable and inconvenient headgear would be redeemed by the reliable and versatile lens save for one thing; the useless delay settings that expose a user's eyes to electrodes glowing with the intensity of a new star.Seriously. A delay setting of half a second is all this helmet needs to justify the price tag.
