3M Protecta Comfort Construction Full Body Harness, Medium/Large (Fall Arrest Harness) Overview

The 3M Protecta Comfort Construction Full Body Harness (Medium/Large) is a construction-style fall arrest harness built for crews who need an OSHA-compliant connection point without a premium price. It sits in 3M's value-tier Protecta family, below the DBI-SALA ExoFit line, and brings padded comfort to daily wear on full body harnesses duty.

A full-body harness is the only body wear OSHA permits for fall arrest — body belts are prohibited for arresting a fall. This Protecta model provides the dorsal (back) D-ring that connects to a shock-absorbing lanyard or a self retracting lifeline, completing a personal fall arrest system anchored to a 5,000 lb anchorage per OSHA 1926.502.

The Medium/Large size band fits most mid-size workers; confirm your chest and waist measurements against 3M's sizing before ordering. As construction-style wear, it is designed for general elevated work on scaffolds, steel, and rooftops. Browse the full fall protection range to add the lanyard, SRL, and anchorage that complete your system.

What It Is Built For

Use case Fit Buyer guidance
General construction fall arrest (scaffold, steel, rooftop) Strong fit Connect the dorsal D-ring to a shock-absorbing lanyard or SRL anchored to 5,000 lb per OSHA 1926.502.
All-day wear where comfort matters Strong fit Padded construction-style design reduces pressure points during extended elevated work.
Mid-size worker needing standard sizing Good fit Medium/Large band suits most average builds; check chest and waist against 3M's size chart first.
Arc flash or electrical work Not suitable This is a standard construction harness; choose a dedicated arc-flash-rated harness for energized work.
Work positioning or rebar climbing needing side D-rings Verify before buying Confirm whether this model carries side positioning D-rings on the live listing; do not assume.
Replacing a harness that arrested a fall Required replacement Any harness involved in a fall must be retired immediately — this is a compliant replacement choice.

Fall protection is life-safety equipment. A personal fall arrest system must limit free fall and arrest forces under OSHA 1926.502 / 1910.140 and ANSI Z359: use a full-body harness (never a body belt for fall arrest) with a compatible shock-absorbing lanyard or self-retracting lifeline and an anchorage rated 5,000 lb per worker (or engineered to a 2:1 safety factor). Inspect every component before each use, immediately retire anything that has arrested a fall or shows damage, and work to a documented rescue plan. Browse fall protection and full-body harnesses.

Pros & Cons

  • Value-tier Protecta pricing versus premium DBI-SALA harnesses

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the 3M Protecta Comfort Construction harness OSHA compliant for fall arrest?

It is a full body harness, which is the only body wear OSHA 1926.502 and 1910.140 allow for arresting a fall (body belts are prohibited). To be compliant in use, connect its dorsal D-ring to a shock-absorbing lanyard or self retracting lifeline anchored to a 5,000 lb anchorage. Confirm the harness's specific ratings on the live listing.

What size does the Medium/Large fit?

The M/L band is designed for most mid-size workers. Sizing varies by build, so measure your chest and waist and check them against 3M's official size chart before ordering. If you are at the edge of the range, consider a different size in the full body harnesses collection.

Does this harness come with a lanyard or lifeline?

No. This is the harness only. A complete personal fall arrest system also needs a shock-absorbing lanyard or a self retracting lifeline plus a compliant 5,000 lb anchorage, all sold separately.

Where does the fall arrest connection attach on this harness?

It uses a dorsal (back) D-ring as the primary fall arrest attachment, which keeps you upright after arrest. Attach your lanyard or SRL there. Check the listing to confirm whether any additional D-rings are present before assuming a side or front attachment.

What weight capacity does this harness support?

We do not publish a capacity figure we cannot verify. Confirm the rated capacity range on the live Amazon listing or the 3M data sheet before use, and never load a harness beyond its stated rating including the worker plus tools and equipment.

Is this harness rated to ANSI Z359?

Treat the ANSI rating as something to verify, not assume. Many 3M Protecta harnesses meet ANSI Z359 and OSHA requirements, but you should confirm the exact standard on the product listing or 3M documentation before relying on it for compliance.

Can I use this harness for arc flash or electrical work?

No. This is a standard construction harness, not an arc-flash-rated model. For energized or electrical work, choose a harness specifically rated for arc flash, such as an MSA Workman Arc Flash harness in the full body harnesses collection.

How is this different from the 3M Protecta 1161421 Comfort harness?

Both are value-tier Protecta full body harnesses. The Comfort Construction model is geared toward construction-style daily wear with padding, while the 1161421 Comfort is the entry-level option. Compare them side by side in the full body harnesses collection and verify each one's D-ring layout on its listing.

Do I need to replace this harness after a fall?

Yes. OSHA and 3M require that any component of a personal fall arrest system that has arrested a fall be removed from service immediately and never reused. Buy a replacement harness right away if yours has taken a fall.

How often should I inspect this harness?

Inspect it before every use for cut or frayed webbing, damaged stitching, corroded or deformed D-rings, and faulty buckles. A competent person should also perform documented periodic inspections per your fall protection program. Remove it from service if anything fails inspection.

What lanyard or SRL should I pair with this harness?

Pair it with a shock-absorbing lanyard for shorter fixed-anchor work or a self retracting lifeline for greater mobility and shorter fall distances. Browse the lanyards and self retracting lifelines collections, and always confirm the connector and anchorage are rated for fall arrest.

What else do I need to build a complete fall arrest system?

Beyond the harness, you need a connecting device (shock-absorbing lanyard or SRL) and a 5,000 lb anchorage point, plus enough clearance below to arrest a fall safely. Shop the full fall protection category to assemble every part of the system before working at height.

★★★★★
Comfortable, seems good for the price.
I did a lot of homework on this harness before selecting it. The last harness I had was a top notch harness supplied by my employer at the time. Though I was reimbursed for this one, and thus it too was supplied by my employer, the choice to find the best harness to suit my needs was on me this time. It is quite comfortable when it is adjusted properly and seems to help pull moisture away as you sweat in all the contact areas. The padding does seem to contribute to excessive sweating, so hydrate more. The hardware and features of the harness seem heavy duty and well constructed. It does have some weight to it compared to the minimum mandatory junk companies provide to visitors and contractors who don’t have their own harnesses. I have a separate suitcase only for PPE that I carry mine in. For what you get compared to what it costs, I feel like this harness is pretty nice. I do not remember seeing any evidence of service life expiration though. If I remember correctly my last harness was good for 3 years barring wear and tear, misuse and abuse, or being involved in a fall arrest scenario. There should be an expiration tag on this thing somewhere near the chest area, which is normally part of the pre-use inspection. It would sure go a long way in helping to explain why I have to buy a new one down the road when I do my expense report.

High quality harness.
This is a great harness. Has great fit, is very adjustable to get snug, and has good locations for attachment points. I've spent a lot of time on my roof cleaning gutters and doing Christmas lights, sitting and standing a bit. The harness never got loose and none of the buckles came undone or came close to it, always felt safe.Weight is good. It's not too heavy, but doesn't feel cheap, but I will say I'm happy to take this off after a while. Easy to setup and use.

Great price and quality
Reasonably light, fits well, very comfortable, easy to adjust. I like it alot more than the Miller harness I used before it. That was nice but a huge hassle to get into and adjust. This one just feels natural.

AWESOME harness
I bought one of these harnesses. It was a little bit too small so instead of returning it, I bought the size I needed and a friend of mine bought the other harness from me. Both of us absolutely love this harness. It’s amazingly comfortable, and Quality has great padding. Make sure that you get, a soft loop 12 inch extension for it so you can hook and unhook your harness. Make sure you get one with the soft loop on one end and a round hoop on the other end that’s made of metal.

Great for the money
Harness is a great buy for the money. Fits well all except for the waist belt. I'm a bigger guy at 300lbs. The harness is rated for 420lbs with tools so me and my tools fall within the rated Wright. But the waist belt is too small. Had to buy another belt to put in it and now it fits good.

Very well made
I did pole, tower, and manhole work where harnesses are an OSHA requirement. Buy the best and spend more than you can afford. There is only one of you. Retired now, I got this to work on the roof with vertical fall system to supplement my rope. If you have a long torso or are long waisted get the next size up. I’m 6-1, 245lbs, if I was any bigger in any dimension, it would have been too small. Very well made and wears well. Good kit.

Very comfortable, but please invest in trauma straps.
I spend roughly 10 hours a day in this harness, and compared to the one my company provides, this thing is as comfortable as it gets. Please be sure to check the date of manufacture before using for work. Remember, your life depends on this thing being able to hold you up / stop your fall. Also, make sure you invest in relief straps. In the event that you do fall, you can only stay conscious for about 10 - 15 minutes while suspended in the air. If your work site doesn’t have a rescue plan in place, this could mean you have to spend significantly longer suspended in the harness. It’s imperative that you have something to “stand” on such as a relief strap to take pressure off your legs. If you don’t, blood pools in your legs and can cause you to pass out, eventually causing suffocation resulting in death. If you are rescued while unconscious, you still aren’t out of the woods. You can actually have a blood clot which releases or the blood can rush too quickly back to your heart. Please take this warning seriously. Invest the $20 in relief steps. If you don’t YOU CAN DIE. There have been tons of documented cases of this happening to both workers and rock climbers / others who have fallen in harnesses.

Awesome fit.
This has been my go to for years now. I have owned 4 in the last 8 years. I have never "needed" to replace it. It was a personal choice. I personally set mine up to also be my tool pouch.
