3M PELTOR X4A Ear Muffs NRR 27 - Over-the-Head Passive Hearing Protection Overview

The 3M PELTOR X4A is the high-attenuation, over-the-head member of 3M's X-Series, carrying a Noise Reduction Rating (NRR) of 27 dB measured to ANSI S3.19. It is a passive ear muff β€” there are no electronics, no Bluetooth, no AM/FM radio, and no sound amplification. Protection comes entirely from the sealed cup, foam liner, and headband clamping force, so attenuation is consistent and there are no batteries to manage on a high-noise shift or at the range.

Buyers reach for the X4A when they need more passive attenuation than a mid-tier muff but still want a slim, twin-cup design that clears a rifle stock and pairs cleanly with safety glasses. The NRRΒ 27 rating sits near the top of 3M's passive over-the-head lineup β€” above the X2A and X1A β€” making it a strong single-product choice for sustained exposure on saws, grinders, compressors, and firing lines.

Read the rating honestly. The labeled NRR is a laboratory number; real-world attenuation is lower. NIOSH recommends derating a muff's NRR (a common approach subtracts 7 dB, then halves the result) before you count on it for a worker's daily noise dose. Use the how to calculate NRR walkthrough and the what is NRR primer to size protection to your measured dBA, and confirm your program against OSHA 1910.95 hearing-conservation requirements. The X4A is a passive muff in 3M's broader hearing protection range; if you need situational awareness or radio, see the electronic ear muffs instead.

What It Is Built For

Use case Fit Buyer guidance
Sustained high-noise industrial work (saws, grinders, compressors) Excellent NRR 27 passive attenuation suits continuous exposure; derate per NIOSH and confirm against your measured dBA.
Outdoor pistol or rifle range (passive) Excellent Slim over-the-head cups clear a stock and stack with glasses; no electronics means no batteries to fail mid-string.
Hard-hat / cap-mount use Not compatible X4A is over-the-head only. Choose a cap-mount X-Series model (e.g., X2P3E/X1P3E) for slotted hard hats.
Needing to hear range commands or conversation between shots Poor Passive muffs block all sound equally. Use an electronic muff with sound restoration if situational awareness matters.
Live electrical / arc-flash adjacent work Limited X4A is not marketed as dielectric; for electrically insulated cups choose the X2P5E dielectric cap-mount model.
Brief, intermittent noise exposure Good but high NRR 27 may overprotect for short tasks; a lower-NRR muff or plugs can preserve awareness while staying compliant.

Earmuffs reduce noise, but the labeled NRR is a laboratory number β€” real-world protection is lower (NIOSH and OSHA both derate it). The muff only protects if the cushions seal fully around the ear: long hair, eyeglass temples, and gaps under a hard-hat-mounted muff all break the seal. In very high noise, wear muffs and earplugs together (dual protection). Electronic muffs amplify quiet sounds and cut loud impulses but still protect only to their rated NRR. OSHA 29 CFR 1910.95 sets the 85 dBA action level; size protection to your measured noise β€” see how to calculate the NRR you need.

Pros & Cons

Pros
  • High passive attenuation: NRR 27 (ANSI S3.19), among the top of 3M's over-the-head X-Series
  • Fully passive - no batteries, no electronics, consistent protection on long shifts
  • Low-profile twin cups clear rifle stocks and pair cleanly with safety glasses
  • Over-the-head band with even clamping force for all-day high-noise wear
  • Color-coded X-Series cups make NRR level easy to identify on a busy floor
Cons
  • Labeled NRR is a lab figure - real-world attenuation is lower; derate per NIOSH before relying on it
  • Passive only - no sound amplification or radio, so range commands and speech are blocked too
  • Over-the-head form factor only - not cap-mountable for slotted hard hats
  • Not marketed as dielectric; choose an insulated model for live-electrical work
  • Higher NRR can overprotect for light, intermittent tasks and muffle warning signals

How It Compares

Within the 3M PELTOR over-the-head X-Series, the X4A (NRR 27) is the high-attenuation option. The X2A (NRR 24) is the mid-tier choice for moderate exposure, while the X1A (NRR 22) is the slimmest, lowest-attenuation muff for lighter noise where situational awareness matters more. All three are passive over-the-head designs β€” none have electronics. If you run slotted hard hats, none of these fit; step to a cap-mount model such as the X2P3E or the dielectric X2P5E. If you need to hear speech or range commands between loud events, a passive muff like the X4A is the wrong tool β€” compare the electronic ear muffs with sound restoration instead.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the NRR of the 3M PELTOR X4A?

The X4A is rated NRR 27 dB under ANSI S3.19. That is a laboratory figure - real-world attenuation is lower, so NIOSH recommends derating (a common method subtracts 7 dB, then halves the result) before relying on it for a worker's noise dose. See our how to calculate NRR guide to size it to your measured dBA.

Is the X4A passive or electronic?

The X4A is fully passive. It has no electronics, no Bluetooth, no AM/FM radio, and no sound amplification. Protection comes from the sealed cups and headband alone, so there are no batteries to manage. If you need to hear speech or commands between loud events, look at our electronic ear muffs instead.

Can the X4A be mounted on a hard hat?

No. The X4A is an over-the-head model only and cannot be clipped into hard-hat accessory slots. For hard-hat use, choose a cap-mount X-Series model such as the X2P3E, or the dielectric X2P5E for electrical work.

Does NRR 27 mean I get 27 dB of real-world protection?

No. The 27 dB is a lab rating. NIOSH advises derating it for real-world fit, and OSHA also recommends derating when assessing compliance. Plan on meaningfully less than 27 dB at the ear; our what is NRR explainer walks through how to convert the label to expected field attenuation.

Is the X4A good for shooting at the range?

Yes, for passive use. The slim over-the-head cups clear a rifle stock and pair with safety glasses, and NRR 27 is strong passive attenuation for outdoor ranges. The trade-off is that passive muffs block range commands and conversation equally; if that matters, choose an electronic muff with sound restoration.

How does the X4A compare to the X2A and X1A?

All three are passive over-the-head X-Series muffs. The X4A is highest at NRR 27, the X2A is mid-tier at NRR 24, and the X1A is the slimmest at NRR 22. Choose by your measured noise level - higher dBA exposure favors the X4A, lighter exposure favors the X1A or X2A. Compare them in our ear muffs collection.

Will the X4A meet OSHA hearing-protection requirements?

OSHA 29 CFR 1910.95 requires hearing protection that brings a worker's exposure under the action level, using derated attenuation. Whether the X4A is sufficient depends on your measured dBA and exposure time. Read our OSHA 1910.95 overview and run your numbers before specifying it for a job.

Is the X4A dielectric or safe for electrical work?

The X4A is not marketed as a dielectric (electrically insulated) muff. For live-electrical or arc-flash-adjacent work where conductive parts near the head are a concern, choose an electrically insulated model such as the 3M PELTOR X2P5E cap-mount earmuff.

Does the X4A have Bluetooth or a radio?

No. The X4A is a passive muff with no Bluetooth, radio, or aux input. If you want music or two-way communication on the job, look at a Bluetooth or electronic model in our electronic ear muffs collection rather than the X4A.

Can I wear the X4A with ear plugs for more protection?

Yes. Dual protection (muffs over plugs) is common in very high-noise environments, but the combined attenuation is not simply the two NRRs added. NIOSH suggests adding only about 5 dB to the higher-rated device. See ear plugs vs ear muffs for how to combine them correctly.

Is NRR 27 too much protection for some jobs?

It can be. Overprotection can muffle speech, alarms, and backup warnings, which is a safety issue in lower-noise areas. If your measured exposure is modest, a lower-NRR muff or plugs may be the better, more aware choice. Use our how to calculate NRR guide to match the rating to the task.

What is included and how is the X4A sold?

It is sold as a single over-the-head ear muff (headband and two cups). It does not include a cap-mount adapter or any electronics. For exact pack contents, weight, and current pricing, check the live Amazon listing linked on this page.

Excelentes

comfortable, quiet, sturdy
The most comfortable ear pro I've tried. I use these in the woodshop and often forget they are on due to enjoying the silence. They fit well and seem very durable. WAY better than inserting earplugs all the time, I can either leave these on my head or around my neck during the periods I'm working with power tools and drop them on when needed. Not too huge and bulky like some earmuffs, but still do an excellent job of killing the noise. Highly recommended will buy again.

Awesome performance- better than active noise canceling earbuds!!!
I was looking for a product that can help me focus better while working on my computer or reading books, articles, etc. at my home. The key application was usage inside my house.

Vacuum seal gives excellent cancellation. Feels like ear popping though
First, the pros. Out of several different ear muffs I have for noise cancellation, this is by far the best one. I have the Peltor X4A, which is made in Poland. It's the highest noise cancellation that is still a slim profile.

Great Quality, Design, Comfort. Works Well, Not For Extreme Noise
These earmuffs are absolutely the best I've tried yet. They're the 4th pair I've tried in a very short period of time. The others were broken, cheap, or very painful to wear. They squeezed my head like a vice.

They work, slim compared to others, does hurt a little though
They are working, and I will be honest I can't tell if its just my right ear, but my left feels fine when using these. My right ear though.. man some days its killing me under these to the point I need an advil. They adjust, even if a bit stiff, they cancel noise really well. Be sure to check the "seal" it makes around your head, if you have to wear eye protection like I do, then it might make them not sit flush and won't work as well. Seem a bit tough. Large, but not as large as others I have seen. They are a bit small on the ears I guess, which is what is bringing on the pain on my right side, but I am sure I just need to fiddle with it.. figure out what my ear likes.

If you’re wondering like me which is best, it’s the x4a
I like this Peltor series a lot, and I’ve tried other hearing protection. I couldn’t choose just one, so I got them all. Neighbor’s dog constantly barks, and they’re horrible owners who leave him outside to do so during the night. I needed something comfortable enough to sleep in. As for the review:

Wow - I like these!
I say, β€œWow” because I was expecting the usual cheaper-version feel of a giant vice gripping my head. I was pleasantly surprised!

Quality protection for those who want to keep their hearing
I ordered both the 3M 24db Black/Yellow X2A and the 3M 27db Black/Chartreuse X4A earmuffs. I will refer to them as the X2A and X4A for the remainder of this review. For those of you who are trying to decide between the X2A and X4A here are a few things that may be helpful:

Produto com resultado muito ruim.
Infelizmente o protetor de ruΓdos nΓ£o diminui o ruΓdo o suficiente ao ponto de usar ele e trabalhar trabalhando e em um ambiente calmo, com um barulho ou outro. Produto muito caro para um resultado tΓ£o baixo, melhor ter comprado um mais barato jΓ‘ que os ruΓdos nΓ£o sΓ£o abafados nem pela metade do barulho normal.
