3M PELTOR H505B Welding Earmuffs NRR 22 - Behind-the-Head Passive Hearing Protection Overview

The 3M PELTOR H505B is a passive, behind-the-head welding earmuff rated NRR 22 (ANSI S3.19). The neckband sits behind your head instead of over the crown, so it clears the shell of a welding helmet, a flip-up face shield, or the brim of a hard hat β€” the exact spots where a standard over-the-head band fights for room. If you weld, grind, or work under headgear and a top band keeps knocking loose, this is the form factor built for the job.

This is a passive muff: foam-and-fluid cushions and dense cup baffling block noise mechanically. There is no Bluetooth, no radio, and no microphone amplification. That keeps it simple and battery-free, but it also means it only attenuates to its lab rating β€” it cannot let quiet voices through or compress impulse noise the way an electronic ear muff does. If you need to hear range commands or conversation between bursts of noise, compare the best electronic ear muffs instead.

About that NRR 22: the printed number comes from a lab. NIOSH recommends derating real single-protector use by roughly 50%, and OSHA applies its own factor, so on the floor plan on closer to 11 dB of usable attenuation. Use our how to calculate NRR guide to size protection to your measured exposure, and confirm your program meets OSHA 1910.95. For a fuller breakdown of how the rating is derived, see what is NRR. The H505B lives in our broader hearing protection range alongside other ear muffs.

What It Is Built For

Use case Fit Buyer guidance
Welding under a helmet or flip-up face shield Excellent Behind-the-head band leaves the crown clear so the helmet shell and headgear sit without fighting an over-the-head band.
Work that combines a hard hat with hearing protection Good Neckband clears most hard-hat brims; for a band-free setup a cap-mount muff that clips to the hat may pack tighter.
Continuous shop, grinding, or fabrication noise Good Passive NRR 22 attenuates steadily; derate to ~11 dB and confirm it covers your measured exposure under OSHA 1910.95.
Range or hunting where you must hear between shots Poor No amplification or impulse compression. Choose an electronic muff to keep range commands and conversation audible.
Very high-exposure environments above ~95 dBA Limited NRR 22 may not be enough alone. Consider a higher-NRR over-the-head muff or dual protection with plugs.

Earmuffs reduce noise, but the labeled NRR is a laboratory number β€” real-world protection is lower (NIOSH and OSHA both derate it). The muff only protects if the cushions seal fully around the ear: long hair, eyeglass temples, and gaps under a hard-hat-mounted muff all break the seal. In very high noise, wear muffs and earplugs together (dual protection). Electronic muffs amplify quiet sounds and cut loud impulses but still protect only to their rated NRR. OSHA 29 CFR 1910.95 sets the 85 dBA action level; size protection to your measured noise β€” see how to calculate the NRR you need.

Pros & Cons

Pros
  • Behind-the-head band clears welding helmets, face shields, and hard-hat brims that block over-the-head muffs
  • Passive design: no batteries, no electronics, nothing to fail mid-shift
  • NRR 22 (ANSI S3.19) gives reliable, continuous attenuation for shop and fabrication noise
  • Trusted 3M PELTOR build quality and replaceable-cushion ecosystem
  • Low-profile neckband stays out of the way when you tilt your head or look up to weld
Cons
  • Real-world protection is lower than the NRR 22 label β€” plan on roughly 11 dB after NIOSH/OSHA derating
  • No electronics: cannot amplify quiet sound or compress impulse noise like an electronic muff
  • NRR 22 is mid-range; very loud environments may need a higher-rated muff or dual protection
  • Behind-the-head band can feel less secure than an over-the-head band for some users

How It Compares

Within 3M's passive PELTOR line, form factor and NRR are the deciding variables. The H505B is the behind-the-head welding specialist at NRR 22 β€” choose it when a welding helmet or hard hat blocks an over-the-head band. The X1A matches its NRR 22 but in a standard over-the-head band for general work. Step up to the X2A (NRR 24) or X4A (NRR 27) when you need more attenuation and the crown is free. All four are passive, so none amplify quiet sound β€” if that matters, look at an electronic ear muff instead.

Model Form factor NRR Best for
H505B Behind-the-head 22 Welding / under headgear
X1A Over-the-head 22 General work, crown free
X2A Over-the-head 24 More attenuation
X4A Over-the-head 27 Loudest passive option

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the NRR of the 3M PELTOR H505B?

It is rated NRR 22 under ANSI S3.19. That is a lab number; after the NIOSH/OSHA 50% derate for real single-protector use, plan on roughly 11 dB of usable attenuation on the job.

Is the H505B a behind-the-head or over-the-head earmuff?

Behind-the-head. The neckband routes behind your head instead of over the crown, which is what lets it clear a welding helmet, face shield, or hard-hat brim.

Why is the H505B made for welding specifically?

Welding helmets and flip-up shields occupy the top of your head where a standard over-the-head band sits. The behind-the-head design keeps the crown clear so the helmet and the muffs don't fight for the same space.

Is the H505B electronic or passive?

Passive. There are no electronics, no Bluetooth, no radio, and no microphone amplification. It attenuates noise mechanically up to its NRR 22 rating and needs no batteries. If you need to hear quiet sound between loud bursts, see our best electronic ear muffs guide.

Will the H505B work with a hard hat?

Yes. Because the band sits behind your head rather than over it, it clears most hard-hat brims. If you want a fully band-free setup, a cap-mount muff that clips directly to the hat may pack tighter.

Does NRR 22 mean it blocks 22 dB of noise?

Not in practice. The 22 dB figure is from a controlled lab test. NIOSH recommends derating real-world single-protector use by about 50%, so expect closer to 11 dB. Use our how to calculate NRR guide to match protection to your measured exposure.

Is NRR 22 enough for my workplace?

It depends on your measured noise level. Subtract the derated value (~11 dB) from your exposure and check the result against the OSHA 1910.95 permissible limit. For very loud areas above ~95 dBA you may need a higher-NRR muff or dual protection with plugs.

How does the H505B compare to the 3M PELTOR X1A?

Both are passive and rated NRR 22. The difference is form factor: the H505B uses a behind-the-head band for welding and headgear, while the X1A uses a standard over-the-head band for general work where the crown is free.

Should I buy the H505B or a higher-NRR muff like the X2A or X4A?

If a helmet or hard hat blocks an over-the-head band, the H505B is the right form factor at NRR 22. If your crown is free and you need more attenuation, the X2A (NRR 24) or X4A (NRR 27) over-the-head muffs give a higher rating.

Can I hear conversation or commands while wearing the H505B?

Only what passes through passively, which is muffled. It has no amplification, so it won't restore quiet speech the way an electronic muff does. For range or team work where you must hear between noise bursts, choose an electronic model.

Are the ear cushions replaceable?

3M PELTOR muffs use a hygiene/cushion kit ecosystem, so worn cushions can typically be swapped rather than replacing the whole muff. Confirm the correct kit for the H505B before ordering and check the Amazon listing for current part details.

Not amazing sound reduction, but adequate. The fit is clumsy, especially under a hood or hard hat.

I listen to music and audiobooks while welding and use a 3M Speedglas hood and filter system. These fit perfectly under the hood. The wire around the neck took a little bit to get used to but wasn't bad. They filter out most of the surrounding noise in the shop and allow me to listen to both my mp3 player and to my work without being uncomfortable or getting banged around by the hood.

They wouldn't work with a huntsman weld hood, they do work with the 9100 speedglas. I can't flip my hood down, have to spread the sides and pull it down by hand. I'd say I have a smaller head than the typical welder, if you have a big head you may have issues.

they work great to dampen sounds in the shop. BUT they will NOT fit under a standard welding helmet. A welding helmet attached to a hard hat they might.
