3M DBI-SALA ExoFit X200 Construction Positioning Full Body Harness 1402106, Medium Overview

The 3M DBI-SALA 1402106 ExoFit X200 Construction Positioning Full Body Harness in Medium is 3M's premium construction-style harness, configured for work positioning. The ExoFit X200 line is DBI-SALA's high-comfort platform, and the "Construction Positioning" build adds the workflow features trades expect when they have to stop, tie off, and work with both hands free at height.

A full body harness is one of three required parts of a personal fall arrest system. Under OSHA 1926.502 (construction) and 1910.140 (general industry), the system needs a full body harness — a body belt alone is never permitted for fall arrest — connected to a shock-absorbing lanyard or a self-retracting lifeline, anchored to a point that meets OSHA's anchorage strength requirement. This harness is the worn component; the lanyard or SRL and the anchor are bought separately.

Construction positioning harnesses are designed to support a worker at a single elevated position so the hands stay free for the task. Positioning attachments are for restraint and positioning only and never replace the back D-ring connection used for fall arrest. Always read the 3M user instructions packed with the harness to confirm which D-rings are rated for fall arrest versus positioning on this specific model — do not assume.

Size Medium should be matched to the wearer using 3M's official size chart and verified by a snug fit test before each use. For mixed crews, browse the rest of our full body harnesses to cover other sizes, and see the broader fall protection range to complete the system. Critically, any harness that has arrested a fall must be retired from service immediately — it cannot be reused.

What It Is Built For

Use case Fit Buyer guidance
Work positioning at a fixed elevated spot (formwork, rebar, towers) Designed for it This is a construction positioning harness; positioning D-rings free the hands while a fall arrest connection stays on the back D-ring.
General construction fall arrest Suitable Use the dorsal (back) D-ring with a compliant shock-absorbing lanyard or SRL and an OSHA-rated anchor.
Replacing a harness that already stopped a fall Required Any harness that has arrested a fall must be retired; order a fresh unit rather than reusing the old one.
Sizing a Medium-build worker Check fit Confirm size Medium against 3M's official size chart and a snug fit test before buying.
Arc flash or hot-work environments Verify first Title does not state arc-rated construction; do not assume arc protection — confirm with 3M specs or choose a labeled arc-flash harness.
Outfitting a multi-size crew Partial This listing is Medium only; add other sizes from our full body harnesses collection.

Fall protection is life-safety equipment. A personal fall arrest system must limit free fall and arrest forces under OSHA 1926.502 / 1910.140 and ANSI Z359: use a full-body harness (never a body belt for fall arrest) with a compatible shock-absorbing lanyard or self-retracting lifeline and an anchorage rated 5,000 lb per worker (or engineered to a 2:1 safety factor). Inspect every component before each use, immediately retire anything that has arrested a fall or shows damage, and work to a documented rescue plan. Browse fall protection and full-body harnesses.

Pros & Cons

Pros
  • Premium 3M DBI-SALA ExoFit X200 platform built for all-day construction wear
  • Positioning configuration frees both hands at a fixed work location
  • Serves as the harness component of an OSHA-compliant personal fall arrest system
  • Backed by 3M's documented user instructions and inspection guidance
  • Medium sizing suits a defined body range when matched to the size chart
Cons
  • Sold as the harness only — a compliant lanyard or SRL and a rated anchor are separate purchases
  • Single size (Medium); mixed crews need additional sizes
  • Positioning D-rings are not fall arrest points — workflow knowledge required
  • Must be retired permanently after arresting any fall

How It Compares

All models below are 3M DBI-SALA ExoFit-series full body harnesses, so the choice comes down to platform tier, configuration, and size. Confirm exact capacities, D-ring layouts, and ratings against 3M's official documentation before buying — those details are not asserted here.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the 3M DBI-SALA 1402106 a complete fall protection kit?

No. It is the full body harness only. To build a compliant personal fall arrest system you also need a shock-absorbing lanyard or a self-retracting lifeline plus an OSHA-rated anchor. See our lanyards and self retracting lifelines collections to complete the setup.

What size is this harness?

This listing is the Medium. Match the wearer to 3M's official ExoFit X200 size chart and do a snug fit test before buying. For other sizes, browse our full body harnesses collection.

What does 'construction positioning' mean on this harness?

It means the harness is built for work positioning — supporting a worker at a fixed elevated spot so the hands stay free. The positioning D-rings are for positioning/restraint only, not fall arrest; fall arrest still uses the back (dorsal) D-ring. Always confirm the rated attachment points in 3M's user instructions.

Can I use the side positioning D-rings to stop a fall?

No. Positioning D-rings are rated for positioning and restraint, not for arresting a free fall. Connect your shock-absorbing lanyard or SRL to the dorsal D-ring designated for fall arrest, as specified in the 3M instructions packed with the harness.

Does this harness meet OSHA requirements?

A harness is one part of compliance. OSHA 1926.502 and 1910.140 require a full body harness (never a body belt) connected to a compliant lanyard or SRL and a rated anchorage. Use this harness within such a system and follow 3M's instructions; we do not claim a specific certification beyond what 3M documents.

What is the weight capacity of the 1402106?

We don't state a capacity figure here because the product title doesn't list one. Check the official 3M DBI-SALA specification sheet or the label on the harness for the rated capacity range, and never exceed it.

Is this an arc-flash rated harness?

The title does not indicate arc-flash construction, so don't assume it. If you work hot or energized environments, verify arc ratings directly with 3M or choose a harness explicitly labeled for arc flash.

Do I have to replace the harness after a fall?

Yes. Any harness that has arrested a fall must be removed from service permanently — it cannot be reinspected back into use. Keep a spare from our fall protection range so a worker is never left without compliant gear.

How does the X200 compare to the X100 and X300?

X200 is 3M's mid-premium ExoFit tier; X100 is the value tier and X300 is the top tier. This 1402106 is the X200 in a construction positioning build. Compare configurations across our full body harnesses collection.

How often should I inspect this harness?

Inspect it before every use and have a competent person perform documented periodic inspections per your program and 3M's instructions. Remove it from service if you find cut webbing, damaged stitching, corroded hardware, or any fall-arrest event.

Will this work for general industry, not just construction?

The positioning features are aimed at construction-style work, but full body harnesses serve general-industry fall protection under 1910.140 as well. Confirm the model's rated attachment points suit your task and pair it with the right lanyard or SRL from our fall protection lineup.

Where can I find matching lanyards and lifelines?

Add a shock-absorbing lanyard from our lanyards collection or a self-retracting lifeline from our self retracting lifelines collection. Choose the connector based on your anchor location, fall clearance, and the 1402106's designated fall-arrest D-ring.

It’s a good harness
I’m an ironworker so I’m in a harness just about everyday. It’s a comfortable harness the only two things I don’t like about it is the leg straps. When I’m walking they always seem to loosen up a little and the chest strap. The plastic protector that slides up and down broke on both shoulders in a couple days of use. I just duct taped mine so it can’t move. Other than that it’s a good harness. In my opinion I probably wouldn’t buy it again just because of those issues. I’d prefer a belt style leg straps but that’s just me

Will last a long time
Does bother shoulders. If you don’t have the extra money for the one with shoulder and back support this is the next best thing. Helps hold your tips up and keeps me safe at work

It is what it is
Does everything I want it to do but why they didn't put a loop in the middle of the belt is beyond me. Pretty much limits you to putting your bolt bags in one specific spot. Not a fan of this tbh because I makes the front of the belt get a little jumbled up and leaves a lot of wasted space in the back. Nobody is carrying spuds or bill pins on their back. You can work around it and for the price it's hard to beat given the brand and quality of harness youre getting.
