3M Aura 1870+ N95 Surgical Respirator β€” NIOSH-Approved N95 Disposable Respirator

3M Aura 1870+ N95 Surgical Respirator uses 3M's three-panel Aura flat-fold construction to create more interior facial volume than a standard cup design β€” reducing filter media contact with lips during long clinical shifts β€” while retaining full FDA 510(k) surgical mask clearance and NIOSH N95 particulate approval in a single device.

Key Features β€” 1870+

Hazard Coverage β€” 3M Aura 1870+ N95 Surgical Respirator

The 3M Aura 1870+ N95 Surgical Respirator is NIOSH-approved under 42Β CFRΒ 84 SubpartΒ K for non-oil-based particulates at β‰₯95% efficiency. Approved hazards include construction and masonry dust, pollen, mold spores, smoke particulates, grain and wood dust, and certain biological aerosols. The 1870+ is NOT rated for oil-based particles β€” spray paint mist, cutting fluid aerosols, and lubricant mist degrade N-class electret media faster than rated. For oil environments choose an R95 (oil-resistant, one shift) or P100 (oil-proof). Compare classes in our N95 vs P100 guide and the complete disposable respirator guide.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the 1870+ FDA-cleared as a surgical mask?

Yes. The 1870+ is FDA 510(k)-cleared as a surgical mask in addition to its NIOSH N95 classification β€” meaning it meets both the fluid-resistance and filtration requirements for surgical environments. This dual clearance is what distinguishes a surgical N95 from a standard industrial N95.

What is the difference between a surgical N95 and a standard N95?

A surgical N95 like the 1870+ carries both NIOSH N95 approval (particulate filtration) AND FDA 510(k) clearance (fluid resistance, biocompatibility for clinical use). Standard industrial N95s are NIOSH-approved but not FDA-cleared. Both provide N95 filtration; only the surgical version is cleared for use in environments where fluid resistance matters.

Is the 1870+ NIOSH-approved?

Yes. The 1870+ is NIOSH-approved under 42Β CFRΒ 84 SubpartΒ K as an N95 filtering facepiece respirator. Confirm the TC approval number on the NIOSH Certified Equipment List.

Does the 1870+ require a fit test for healthcare use?

Yes. OSHA 29Β CFRΒ 1910.134 and CDC/NIOSH guidelines require fit testing before healthcare workers use N95 respirators for protection against airborne pathogens. See our fit testing guide for protocols specific to cup-shaped and flat-fold surgical N95s.

Can the 1870+ be reused in a healthcare setting?

Standard guidance is single-use or limited reuse per CDC crisis standards of care. In non-crisis conditions, the 1870+ is designed for single-use per manufacturer labeling. CDC contingency and crisis guidance allows limited reuse; consult your facility's infection control policy.

How does the 1870+ compare to KN95 masks?

The 1870+ is NIOSH N95-approved and FDA 510(k)-cleared under U.S. federal standards; KN95 is a Chinese standard that is not interchangeable with NIOSH approval. For regulated healthcare environments, a NIOSH-approved surgical N95 is the appropriate choice, not a KN95.

What size is the 1870+?

See the product title and specifications table for size. 3M offers both standard and small (1860S) sizes in this surgical N95 line. Our respirator sizing guide helps identify the right fit for your face dimensions.

Can non-healthcare workers use the 1870+?

Yes. There is no restriction on industrial workers or general public using a surgical N95 β€” it provides the same or higher protection than a standard industrial N95 and adds fluid resistance. Browse all surgical N95 respirators.

How many 1870+ respirators come in a box?

See the product title for pack count. Browse all surgical N95 respirators.

What is the shelf life of the 1870+?

3M lists a 5-year shelf life for the 1860 series from production date in original sealed packaging stored in a controlled environment. FDA and NIOSH may extend shelf life under emergency authorization; always check the lot expiration date before use.

Does the 1870+ protect against gases or vapors?

No. The 1870+ is a particulate filter only β€” it does not capture organic vapors, chemical gases, or other gaseous hazards. It is designed for healthcare aerosol protection and compatible non-oil particle environments.

What fluid resistance rating does the 1870+ carry?

FDA-cleared surgical N95s must meet ASTM F1862 fluid resistance testing. The 3M 1860-series masks are rated for blood and body fluid splash. Check the product's 510(k) summary for the specific ASTM F1862 pressure rating.

Fits well, good brand
Have used these masks before, very comfortable and work well. As other reviews say, they are not packaged in a box like they do when buying from a manufacturer, but i assume it's to make shipping easier.

A Bargain price and Good Quality
I was running low on N-95 masks that I wear at weekly contra-dances because of such close proximity for several hours. My previous masks were fine but about three times the cost of the 3M version. Based on reviews and cost, I decided to try these and after three weeks, I am quite pleased. They fit well, even over my trimmed beard, and are quite comfortable. When I run low again, I will certainly look to purchase more.

Excellent
Very comfortable. Fit well and formed a good seal. I have a small oval face so I was pleased with how well the mask conformed to my face shape.I bought these to clean up after a rat infestation and was able to do so safely. It involved clearing a house and two cars so a lot of heavy lifting. Due to the thickness you will have to moderate your pace so as not to get winded.I am very happy with this mask. I will definitely be using this particular design in the future. The mask has a medical or sterile smell but nothing terrible.

Great Respirator but Questionable Shipping
First- This NIOSH approved 3M disposable N-95 respirator, Model 1870 plus is an excellent respirator for many people, including me, because it tends to fit more face shapes and sizes than the the molded, dome-shaped models. The most important thing for any respirator is that it fits the wearer with no air leakage. I have been fit-tested at work with this model as well as the dome-shaped model that I have worn for work for many years (3M model 8210), so I know that both provide appropriate protection when my elastomeric respirators are not needed .The 1870 plus flat pack design makes it easier to keep in a purse, backpack, or car glove compartment than the molded models. This has been helpful to me, as I still wear an N-95 respirator when around groups of strangers, since I cannot risk exposure to certain respiratory diseases due to my own health status. The thing I like best about the 1870 plus flat pack design is that it is much easier to wear glasses! I would recommend trying this design (3M 1870+ or 3M 9205+ or 9210+) if the molded versions make it difficult for you to have your glasses properly situated on your nose, or if the glasses constantly fog up.What's the difference between these three flat pack 3M N-95 disposable respirators, you might ask?β€’ All three have the same fit and form factor. They all have an embossed panel to reduce eyewear fogging, are compatible with variety of eyewear, have a chin tab for ease of positioning, donning and adjustment, are individually wrappedβ€’ 9205+ & 9210+ are identical except for the strap material. 9210+ head straps are woven cloth braided elastic. If that is what you want, choose this one. The 9205+ head straps are rubber.β€’ 1870+ has rubber straps just like 9205+. This model has a higher fluid resistance and is approved for use as a surgical mask and healthcare use. Here is my concern. During the pandemic, there were many counterfeit respirators being sold online through third party vendors. I saw some in my job that were purchased by folks for home use. That is why I always ordered my personal supply directly from the manufacturer or from the Industrial Hygiene supply houses that I used for work. When looking to order this time, I saw several vendors selling them on Amazon, but rejected them and chose to buy directly from Amazon, since 3M lists Amazon on their website as a reseller.I fully expected the 20 respirators to arrive from Amazon in a sealed 3M box that contained the appropriate literature about the product. This is what is shown on the Amazon website. Instead, I received a plain plastic bag filled with twenty, individually wrapped 3M 1870 Plus respirators (as supplied by 3M). There were no product inserts or accompanying literature. I was tempted to send the order back, but I know the product and inspected the individual plastic wrap on each one, as well as compared them with identical respirators that were previously obtained from a legitimate source. Therefore I do believe the 20 respirators received from Amazon are legitimate, but given ongoing concerns about counterfeit products entering the marketplace, I advise the buying public to remain vigilant and know who you are dealing with.Lastly, a word to Amazon- if you do not plan to ship products like these respirators in the manufacturer's packaging, do not show them this way on your website and tell your customers up front so they are not unpleasantly surprised as I was.

Great price for a great product
I got these on sale, and they’re not only a STEAL, but also super great quality. It fits my face perfectly and I have a smaller face. The seal is good, the interior bridge that sits on my nose is super super comfortable and the rubber straps don’t make me feel like my head is going to pop. Although very comfortable, it does have a strong chemical smell. But it’s better than smelling stinky people and breathing in their illnesses. You’ll become nose blind eventually, if it’s really bothers you, they’re all individually wrapped so perhaps you should open them and let them air out a little so the smell goes away. I have a sensitive nose and it doesn’t bother me as much as the smell of other people.

Not good quality, not usable.
The other one star reviews offer a good assessment of the crappy design and fit of these cheapest masks. The flimsy rubber bands are tight and uncomfortable, the mask fit my face very poorly. Really not wearable for more than a few minutes. Not worth the time and effort to return them. Too poor in quality to donate to the local Goodwill. I threw them out.
