3M 7500 Series Half Mask Respirator β€” 7501, 7502 & 7503

The 3M 7500 Series Half Mask Respirator is 3M's premium silicone half mask respirator β€” the most comfortable 3M reusable respirator for full-shift wear. This 3M 7500 half face respirator pairs a soft, low-profile silicone face seal with the 3M Cool Flowβ„’ exhalation valve to cut heat and moisture buildup, and it twist-locks onto the entire 3M bayonet cartridge and filter library. Choose your size from the three models in the series: the 7501 (Small), 7502 (Medium), and 7503 (Large). Add the cartridge that matches your hazard β€” paint, solvents, dust, sanding, pesticides, epoxy, or chemical fumes β€” and one mask covers the job.

Quick pick: Buy the 3M 7502 (Medium) if you are unsure on size β€” it fits most adults. Choose the 7501 for smaller faces or the 7503 for larger faces. Want the lowest-cost reusable mask instead of silicone comfort? Compare the 3M 6000 vs 7500. Need rugged durability with a quick-latch? See 3M 6500 vs 7500.

3M 7501 vs 7502 vs 7503 β€” Which Size?

The 7501, 7502, and 7503 are the same 3M 7500 respirator in three facepiece sizes β€” identical silicone seal, Cool Flow valve, NIOSH approval, and bayonet cartridges. Only the face seal geometry changes. A respirator only protects you if it seals, so size is the key choice:

Model Size Who it fits
3M 7501 Small Smaller facial profiles β€” many women and slighter builds
3M 7502 ← most common Medium Most adult workers β€” the default size and best starting point
3M 7503 Large Larger facial profiles β€” choose if Medium feels tight or gaps at the jaw

Facial dimensions β€” not height or build β€” determine fit, and a beard or stubble crossing the seal breaks it regardless of size. OSHA 1910.134(f)(2) requires fit testing before workplace use; if Medium (7502) fails, try Small (7501) or Large (7503).

Why the 3M 7500 Series? (Performance & Comfort)

  • Soft silicone face seal: The 7500's silicone facepiece is gentler on the skin than thermoplastic and holds a comfortable seal over long shifts β€” the reason most workers pick the 7500 over the value 6000 series for daily wear.
  • 3M Cool Flowβ„’ valve: The one-way exhalation valve releases hot, humid exhaled air quickly, reducing heat and moisture buildup inside the mask for cooler, easier breathing.
  • Low-profile design: A compact facepiece preserves your field of view and works better with safety glasses and face shields.
  • Universal 3M bayonet connection: Accepts the entire 3M bayonet cartridge and filter library β€” the same cartridges used on the 6000 and 6500 series β€” so one facepiece adapts to almost any airborne hazard.
  • Reusable & maintainable: Clean the silicone facepiece, swap cartridges, and reuse β€” far lower cost per shift than disposable respirators for regular work.

Best Uses for the 3M 7500 Series

Paired with the right cartridge, the 3M 7500 reusable respirator covers the most common industrial and DIY exposures β€” match the cartridge to the hazard:

3M 7500 Compatible Cartridges & Filters

The 3M 7500 Series uses the standard 3M bayonet twist-lock, so it accepts the full 3M bayonet cartridge and filter lineup β€” the same as the 6000 and 6500 series. Match the cartridge to your hazard:

Filter / Cartridge Protection Typical use
3M 2091 P100 particulate Sanding, woodworking, dust, silica, lead
3M 2097 P100 + nuisance OV Welding fume with light organic odor
3M 6001 Organic Vapor Paint, solvents, adhesives, epoxy
3M 6003 Organic Vapor / Acid Gas Solvents plus chlorine, HCl, SOβ‚‚
3M 60921 Organic Vapor + P100 Spray painting and coatings with particulate
3M 60923 OV + Acid Gas + P100 Mixed solvent, acid gas, and particulate
3M 6006 Multi-Gas / Vapor Ammonia, formaldehyde, broad multi-gas work

Not sure which to pick? Use the 3M respirator filter and cartridge guide before pairing cartridges with the 7500 Series. For paint, solvents, adhesives, and chemical vapor applications, compare options in the 3M organic vapor cartridge guide, or browse the full lineup at 3M Respirator Filters & Cartridges.

3M 6000 vs 6500 vs 7500 β€” Which Reusable Respirator?

All three 3M reusable half-mask families share the same bayonet cartridges and the same APF 10. The difference is the facepiece: the 6000 is the value choice, the 6500 adds rugged comfort and a quick-latch, and the 7500 adds a soft silicone seal for all-day comfort.

Series Seal material APF Best for
3M 6000 Thermoplastic 10 Lowest-cost reusable half mask
3M 6500 (6502QL) Rugged comfort 10 Quick-latch drop-down; frequent removal
3M 7500 (this series) Soft silicone 10 All-day comfort; sensitive skin; long shifts

OSHA & NIOSH Compliance

  • APF 10: a properly fit-tested half mask carries an Assigned Protection Factor of 10 under OSHA 29 CFR 1910.134 Appendix A β€” use up to 10Γ— the Occupational Exposure Limit.
  • Fit testing: OSHA 1910.134(f)(2) requires annual qualitative (QLFT) or quantitative (QNFT) fit testing before operational use and when changing facepiece model or size.
  • User seal check: perform a positive- and negative-pressure seal check each time you don the respirator (OSHA Appendix B-1).
  • Written program: required wherever respirators are used (1910.134(c)), including hazard assessment and medical evaluation (1910.134(e)).
  • Cartridge change-out schedule: gas/vapor cartridges require a documented schedule based on objective data (1910.134(d)(3)(iii)).
  • Not for IDLH or oxygen-deficient atmospheres.

Frequently Asked Questions

What sizes does the 3M 7500 Series come in?

Three: the 7501 (Small), 7502 (Medium), and 7503 (Large). All share the same silicone seal, Cool Flow valve, and bayonet cartridges β€” only the facepiece size differs.

Which 3M 7500 size should I buy?

Most adults fit the 7502 (Medium) β€” the right default if you are unsure. Choose the 7501 (Small) for smaller faces or the 7503 (Large) for larger faces, and confirm with an OSHA fit test.

Does the 3M 7500 come with filters or cartridges?

No β€” the facepiece is sold without cartridges so you can match the filter to your hazard. Add 2091 P100 filters for dust, or a 6001 organic vapor cartridge for paint and solvents.

What cartridges fit the 3M 7500 Series?

All 3M bayonet filters and cartridges β€” including 2091/2097 P100 filters, 6001/6003/6006 cartridges, and 60921/60923 combinations. Browse the full 3M cartridge & filter lineup.

Will 3M 6000 or 6500 cartridges fit the 7500?

Yes. The 3M 6000, 6500, and 7500 half-mask series all use the identical 3M bayonet twist-lock connector, so cartridges are interchangeable across them. They do not fit Honeywell North, MSA, or Moldex masks.

3M 6000 vs 6500 vs 7500 β€” what's the difference?

Same cartridges and APF 10; the facepiece differs. The 6000 is the value pick, the 6500 adds a quick-latch, and the 7500 adds a soft silicone seal. See 6000 vs 7500 and 6500 vs 7500.

Is the 3M 7500 good for spray painting?

Yes β€” with a 60921 (organic vapor/P100) cartridge it handles paint and solvent spray. For brush/roll with no mist, the 6001 is enough.

Is the 3M 7500 reusable, and do I need a fit test?

Yes to both. The silicone facepiece is reusable β€” clean it, swap cartridges, and reuse. For workplace use, OSHA 1910.134(f)(2) requires annual fit testing, plus a medical evaluation and written respiratory protection program.

APF 10 per OSHA 29 CFR 1910.134 Appendix A. No air-purifying respirator is appropriate in IDLH or oxygen-deficient atmospheres. This content is not medical, legal, or regulatory advice β€” respirator selection is governed by applicable OSHA standards and your facility's respiratory protection program.

Comfortable fit, easy to put on and take off, seals well
I've worn a number of respirators but this one is the most comfortable one that I've used. Usually they are hard on the bridge of my nose but this one is made for a longer wear time and is softer on the nose. I have found it to seal very well and since it's a 3M product, it has a large number of compatible filters. I have a beard and was surprised with the good seal that I still get. My previous 3M respirator was 25 years old and I didn't realize they recommend disposing of them after 3 or 4 years. I did and this one is much better than my old one. The valves work well and it is easy to breathe while wearing and I like that the out breath is pointed downward and doesn't interfere with goggles or moisture dripping on woodworking projects. I've been a bit concerned about wood dust since reading about all the allergies that it can cause and I already have enough of those so I decided it was time to find a good comfortable respirator to wear while woodworking.

It's a 3M respirator
It's a 3M respirator, it doesn't get much better.Sure there are other makes out there, but these are cheap enough and very comfortable. I'm always restoring one classic or another, constantly around dust or spraying automotive paint in an enclosed garage. This one is so comfy, I just leave it on all day. No more mud filled snot to blow out at the end of the day!The pink dust filters work great. The canister 3M filters specially for automotive paint, work fantastically! If you've ever sprayed cerakote, you know just how bad it is, fume wise. The 3M filters remove 99.9% of the fumes. It's hard to even tell there are fumes.3M respirators are the only ones I use. Sure I could save a couple bucks on an off brand, but you only get one set of lungs... How valuable are a couple bucks really in the end... Not worth it, 3M for me and my kids that come to help me in the garage. If taken care of, these should last a very long time. I wouldn't put them in a sealed bag after use though.... Bacteria from your breath will breed like crazy in a sealed environment. Better to leave it out and either blow it out or wipe it out before the next use. I use alcohol wipes, works great.OH, and this seals around the biggest beard (Mines very thick and large). Glasses are basically useless unfortunately. The top head strap is thin enough to be worn under a hat without issue. Ear muffs are fine with this too. As for welding helmets, I've got a Hobart and a YesWelder helmet, although a tight fit, the mask with paint canisters fit behind the helmet.

I'm really impressed
I did alot of research and read alot of reviews before purchasing this specific respirator. I was looking for something that I could wear for maybe 3-4 hours at a time while doing some woodworking and painting. It was important to me to have a good fit, one that was lightweight, comfortable, and hopefully easy to breathe in. My only experience with any kind of face masks prior to this one were the disposable kind that we have all been wearing for the past few years.I was SO impressed when I installed the filters and tried this on. Breathing was very easy - fresh air filled the mask when I would breathe in, and the mask did not feel stuffy or humid when breathing out. This was a night and day experience when compared to the disposable kind. I guess I had assumed that since this mask covers the entire nose and mouth (with a silicone seal), that breathing would feel uncomfortable and difficult - but I was so wrong. Additionally, I usually have some stubble / a short beard and this mask still formed a great seal. I would NOT recommend using this mask WITH facial hair in any environment with dangerous / hazardous materials, but for me - doing some light woodworking and painting, I had no issues whatsoever. I knew the mask was working when I would take it off, and I would be immediately hit by the smell/fumes of whatever I was working with, meanwhile when I had the mask on, I never smelled a thing! I also love that this face mask can be washed with soap and water, because I definitely want to be able to was this periodically if I'm going to be spending so much time breathing through it.As for sizing, I went back and forth between trying to figure out if the medium or large would be better for me (adult male, 30s, 5'8", size M clothes generally). I think I read in some materials from 3M that approx. 90% of adults would wear a size M in this mask, so I decided to just risk and go ahead with the Medium - it turned out to be perfect. I don't know how large a L actually is, but the fit of this mask from the bridge of my nose to under my chin fits like it was molded for me. Very happy with how the sizing turned out.Lastly, and most importantly, make sure you buy the correct bayonet filters for whatever application you are using this for. That seems basic, but I'm sure that lots of people don't realize that some filters are just for dust (not gases), and then the filters for gases have different degrees based on the environment you'll be working in / the chemicals you're working with. This mask won't be any good to you if you don't buy a filter that protects you from the substance you're working with. I hope this helps you!

COMFORTABLE, SIMPLE AND PROTECTIVE (The best one for me)
MOST COMFORTABLE DESIGN. SOFT SILICONE, with simple features that don't cake up with saw dust in the shop. THIS MASK IS AMAZING, however, many other reviews and the 3M description cover most of that..COMFORTABLE FIT AND QUICK RELEASE. Soft silicone face mask easily conforms to many shapes of face.. This (LARGE) one is large enough to fit comfortably on my big mug. So too small is no good for me, and the medium didn't work for me. I like masks to ride on top of the bridge of my nose. Remember, it doesn't matter as much how good the customer service is, nor how the shipping and packaging are..WHAT MATTERS IS.. HOW DOES IT FIT!!Fit and size is all that matters here.. Measure your face and look at these photo measurements, and compare..MEASUREMENT INSIDE THE (LARGE) MASK: (see pictures)Height: 4 1/2" (inches)Width: 3 1/2" (inches)Great Mask.. at a Great Price on Amazon.. (however after all this comparison, i decided to go with this one rather than the 3M 6503QL because it fit a little better and has less detail on the front of it to catch and trap sawdust.)HOW DOES IT FIT.. Check your measurements. I tried several masks and sent back the ones that didn't fit right. (The third party ones "not" purchased from Amazon, i had to pay for shipping and even one from Amazon i had to pay for return shipping.) So buyer beware, try to get the right fit the first time. Also, buy a size up from the one you think. I tried to show photos with measurements to help. This is the mask i feel the most comfortable in. It's a LARGE, which fits up over the bridge of my nose nice and comfortably. 30 yrs of wearing masks and this is the best one ever.

Perfect after one change
I bought the small size respirator (7501) because several reviewers who bought larger ones (7502 and 7503) wished they had gotten small instead. Besides, the small was half the cost (less than $17) of the medium and large versions (around $35) on Amazon for some reason. However, when I tried it on, I had problems that other reviewers complained about: the silicone part of the mask collapsed on my face, the force on the bridge of my nose was painful and my eyeglasses were pushed so high that I couldn’t see straight. It turns out that this was because the elastic strap was cut to a length suitable for a small head while mine is large. Even with the strap adjusted to its longest length, it was still too short and pulled the mask too tightly onto my face, distorting it.When I hold the mask against my face without the strap, it fits me perfectly. My glasses sit behind the nosepiece and my eyes are centered in the lenses. So I bought a 1-1/2 yard piece of black half-inch wide elastic strap from the sewing department at WalMart for about a dollar. Cutting the new strap in half, one piece for each side of the mask, gave me an extra 4 inches of slack at each of the 4 adjustment points. I used a lighter to melt the loose threads at the strap ends so they wouldn’t unravel. I am now able to adjust the mask so that it’s both comfortable and seals well. This respirator comes without filters because there are many types to choose from depending on your intended use. I just need a dust filter for a wood shop and any of the pancake filters work for this purpose such as the 3M 2097 or 2297. One reviewer said he had to buy additional parts to adapt his filter to the mask, but these pancake filters just fit directly onto the side ports. Press on and twist a bit.Overall I’m satisfied. Replacing the strap was worth the effort given the 50% discount on the 7501. I took one star off for the effort needed to make it work.

Suitable replacement for my old AOSafety respirator. Filters sold separately.
I needed to replace an AOSafety respirator (#30089, size medium), for which cartridges are no longer available (despite, or because of, AOSafety having been bought by 3M). 3M offers three or four products in this category and price range. This is the one I chose, because the exhaust is directed down.I'm not sure what other differences there might be, except that this 7502 model is made of silicone rubber, whereas a 3M rep told me the others (62023HA1-A and 62033DHA1-C) are made of rubberized plastic. Whatever difference that makes, who knows? But the silicone is very flexible and comfortable, and feels similar to my old AOSafety. As with all these respirators, the wearer should be clean-shaven. I have a short beard, and although the 3M rep wouldn't okay it, I find that I can perform the positive-and negative-pressure tests (described in the enclosed instructions) successfully. This model includes a dropdown feature (I don't know if it functions the same as on the 3M TEKK 62033DHA1-C). See photo in the product description -- by rerouting the elastic (lifting it out from under a plastic tab in the middle), it will slide as you lower the mask, enabling the mask to easily drop down. But even when routed under that tab (which I suppose makes the adjustment slightly more stable), the elastic (even when properly tightened) stretches enough that I can drop the whole mask down to my neck for awhile. The headgear doesn't appear as robust as on my old AOS model (e.g, the clasp is plastic, not metal), but will suffice for occasional use. Incidentally, it's not just straps; there's a plastic circle at the top that sits on the crown of your head. (The AOSafety gear had two plastic bands serving that function.) Another elastic band (with a plastic closure at back) goes around the your neck. (AOSafety mask's bands were 50% wider than these, but since they are decades old, they're no longer stretchy and I can't say if wider was better. The 3M straps are certainly a good mix of stretchy-yet-taut.)NOTE: The Model 7502 does not come with filters. For multipurpose use, I ordered Airgas Safety 60923.

Using this for yardwork, drywall sanding, cabinet refinishing, and allergies
I purchased the 3M P100 professional filters (3M CARTRIDGE FILTER ORGANIC VAPOR/ACID P100) and 3M P100 Particulate Filters (3M Particulate Filter 7093B, P100 Respiratory Protection (Pack of 4)) from Amazon.com to use with this respirator. So far, I've used this mask for the following:--yardwork (mowing/trimming/leaf blowing 1/2 acre lot)--sanding some drywall in our basement (with limited access to ventilation)--cabinet sanding/priming/painting (ditto on the ventilation issue)--outdoor allergen barrier in the late spring. So far, it's performed really well for all tasks.Pros:--All straps are adjustable, so it should fit most heads pretty well. The straps that fit around the upper cranium are flat enough that I can still wear my sunshade hat over it. The strap that goes around the back of the neck/lower part of the head is pretty standard and necessary if you don't want air leaking in around the chin.--The mask is air-tight around my cheeks and nose. I've had issues with other respirators because my cheeks are kind of hollow and it is hard to find a respirator that conforms to the shape of my face without leaving deep dents over my nose and cheekbones. This respirator has a rubber gasket-like material that helps with the seal against the face and keeps the mask from leaving crazy dents all over your cheeks and nose after you remove it. There were a few marks, but nothing like the plastic-surgery-gone-wrong/Frankenstein's-monster issues that some of my other respirators have had.--Ditto Rachel Levine's earlier review regarding vents: the downward venting design does a good job of preventing fogging of glasses and goggles.Cons:--The rubbery gasket next to your face on the mask causes it to slip a tiny bit when you sweat. I wore it while priming in the 80 degree garage for about 1 hour and had to keep adjusting it because it wanted to slide down a few millimeters from all the sweat. I didn't have this problem when I was working outside in 65 degree weather (not sweating).--The mask is a little heavy for a 5'4" 130lb female, but not uncomfortable. For people with stronger neck/face muscles, this wouldn't even be a consideration.Solid 5 star recommendation for this product.

Great mask, absolute necessity for all sorts of stuff.
This is one of those things where once you work it into your routine you kick yourself for not doing it sooner. Swappable specialty filters are perfect for woodworking with dust or vapor safety, airborne particulates from sanding, planing, jointing etc., can be downright dangerous for your lungs, some woods are even toxic, and the vapors from finishes can be just as bad. Protect your health from inhaling airborne pathogens when cleaning up mouse traps, using sprays cleaning your bathroom, I also use this for dusty yardwork now, gone are the days of blowing dirty snot out my nose...the list goes on and on, this is a must have item. The silicone on this is very comfy for long term use, swapping filters is a breeze, cleans up super easy end of day just removing the filters and running it under the faucet.
