Fibre-Metal by Honeywell E1RW SuperEight Full-Brim Hard Hat — Type II, Class E, 8-Point Ratchet Overview

The Fibre-Metal by Honeywell E1RW SuperEight is a heavy-duty full-brim hard hat built for crews that need both impact protection and electrical insulation. It is certified to ANSI/ISEA Z89.1-2014 as Type II, meaning it is tested for both top impact and lateral (off-center) impact — not just blows from directly above. Its Class E rating means the shell is dielectric and tested to 20,000 volts, so it is suited to electrical, utility, and high-voltage environments where a vented helmet would be unsafe.

The defining feature is the 360-degree full brim, which channels rain, sun glare, sparks, and falling debris away from the face, ears, and neck — a real advantage for outdoor and overhead work compared with a cap-style hard hat. Inside, the 8-point SwingStrap ratchet suspension spreads contact load across more crown points than a 4- or 6-point system and adjusts to head size with a tool-free rear knob. Not sure which rating you need? Compare options in our hard hat selection guide and the hard hat classes explained breakdown.

This SuperEight sits in our full-brim hard hats range alongside other hard hats and safety helmets. Because Class E shells are non-vented for insulation, do not look here for airflow — see vented hard hats only when there is zero electrical exposure. New to ratchet systems? Our how to adjust a hard hat suspension walkthrough covers fit. Remember: under OSHA 1910.135 this hat must be retired after any impact and replaced at its date-code interval. What It Is Built For

Use case Fit Buyer guidance
Electrical / utility work near energized lines Excellent Class E shell is tested to 20kV and non-vented — the correct rating for high-voltage exposure.
Outdoor construction, sun and rain exposure Excellent The 360-degree full brim sheds sun glare and rain away from the face and neck better than a cap style.
Heavy industry with side-impact / falling-object risk Excellent Type II rating adds lateral-impact protection on top of top-impact, ideal for cluttered overhead environments.
Hot-weather work needing airflow Poor Class E shells are non-vented for insulation. If there is no electrical hazard, choose a vented Class C helmet instead.
Tight overhead clearance / confined spaces Limited The wide full brim can snag in tight spaces; a cap-style hard hat is lower profile for confined work.
Welding with attached lugs/visor Limited This SuperEight is a standard full-brim configuration; for welding choose a model with cap-style welder lugs.

A hard hat protects only if it fits and is in date. Match the impact type (Type I top-only vs Type II top + lateral) and electrical class (Class E 20kV / G 2.2kV / C conductive — never wear Class C near electrical) to the hazard. Adjust the suspension for a snug, level fit, inspect the shell and suspension before each use, and replace at the manufacturer date code (shells about 5 years, suspensions about 12 months from first use, and immediately after any impact). OSHA 29 CFR 1910.135 / 1926.100 requires head protection where objects may fall. See how to adjust a hard hat suspension and hard hat classes explained.

Pros & Cons

Pros
  • ANSI/ISEA Z89.1-2014 Type II — rated for both top and lateral impact, not top-only
  • Class E electrical rating, tested to 20,000 volts for utility and high-voltage work
  • 360-degree full brim sheds rain, sun, sparks, and debris away from the face and neck
  • 8-point SwingStrap ratchet suspension distributes load across more crown points than 4- or 6-point systems
  • Tool-free rear ratchet knob makes on-the-job fit adjustment quick
  • Fibre-Metal/Honeywell heritage shell built for heavy-duty industrial use
Cons
  • Non-vented shell — no airflow, runs warmer in hot weather (the trade-off for Class E insulation)
  • Full brim is bulkier and can snag in tight overhead or confined spaces
  • Standard configuration is not pre-set for welding lugs or face shields
  • Must be replaced after any impact and at the date-code interval per OSHA 1910.135

How It Compares

How the Fibre-Metal E1RW SuperEight compares with other full-brim options in our range:

Model Type Class Suspension Vented
Fibre-Metal E1RW SuperEight (this hat) Type II Class E (20kV) 8-point ratchet No
Ergodyne 8971 Skullerz full brim Type I Class E 6-point ratchet No
Klein Tools KARBN non-vented full brim Type II Class E Ratchet No
Milwaukee BOLT full-brim vented helmet Type II Class C Helmet harness Yes

The SuperEight's edge is its 8-point ratchet suspension paired with a Type II / Class E rating — more crown contact points than the typical 6-point full-brim, with full electrical insulation. If you need airflow and have no electrical hazard, the vented Class C BOLT is the alternative; if you only need top-impact protection, the Type I Ergodyne is a lighter option.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Fibre-Metal E1RW SuperEight a Type I or Type II hard hat?

It is a Type II hard hat, certified to ANSI/ISEA Z89.1-2014 for both top impact and lateral (off-center) impact — not top-only like a Type I.

What is the electrical class of this hard hat?

It is Class E, the highest electrical rating, tested to 20,000 volts. That makes it appropriate for electrical, utility, and high-voltage work.

Is the SuperEight vented?

No. Class E shells are non-vented because vent holes would compromise the 20kV electrical insulation. If you need airflow and have no electrical exposure, choose a vented Class C helmet instead.

How many suspension points does it have?

Eight. The 8-point SwingStrap ratchet suspension spreads contact load across more crown points than a typical 4- or 6-point system.

How do I adjust the fit?

Turn the tool-free rear ratchet knob to tighten or loosen the headband. See our how to adjust a hard hat suspension guide for step-by-step instructions.

Why choose a full brim over a cap style?

The 360-degree full brim sheds rain, sun glare, sparks, and falling debris away from your face, ears, and neck. A cap-style hard hat is lower profile and better for tight overhead clearance.

Can I use this hard hat for electrical work near energized lines?

Yes — its Class E rating is tested to 20,000 volts for exactly this purpose. Always follow your site's electrical-safety program and verify the date code before use.

When do I need to replace this hard hat?

Under OSHA 1910.135, replace it immediately after any impact and at the manufacturer's date-code interval, even if it looks undamaged. The shell and suspension degrade over time.

Where is the date code on a Fibre-Metal hard hat?

It is molded into the underside of the shell, typically near the brim, showing the manufacture date so you can track replacement intervals.

How does this compare to a Type II Class C vented helmet?

The SuperEight gives you electrical insulation (Class E) but no airflow. A Class C vented helmet adds cooling but offers zero electrical protection — pick based on whether you face electrical hazards.

Does it fit face shields or earmuffs?

This is a standard full-brim configuration. Accessory compatibility depends on the specific slot and bracket system; check the listing and your accessory's mounting spec before buying. For welding setups, choose a model with welder lugs.

The hard hat does its job perfectly. It's sturdy, lightweight, and fits well thanks to the adjustable strap system. I’ve used it several times on-site and it gives me confidence. Ideal for daily work. Great purchase!

Solid piece of gear
So far this is the best fitting most comfortable and durable hard hat that I have found in my 20 years of line work. Worth the money!

Overall decent
I've been using Fibre-Metal welding hoods since day 1, so figured I'd give the brimmed hard hat a try. Shipping and all that was fine and the brain bucket had a 3/21 production date which is pretty good. Suspension and adjustable head gear is excellent to be expected from their products. It also sits low enough to not look entirely goofy. Now for the bad: The shell itself is mediocre at best. The material is so thin on the brim that it is very flexible. As a result, the brim was warped all over when it came in. I managed to bend it all somewhat straight, though a proper hard had should not flex that much. The lightweight shell feature sounds cool, but they definitely thinned it out too much in the wrong areas. The material is also so thin that sunlight penetrates it. You can see the differences in thickness as the thinner areas look brighter in direct sunlight. I'll wear it till it gets beat up. Will look at other options when time to replace.
