Class D fires involve combustible metals — magnesium, titanium, and sodium. Class K fires involve cooking oils and fats in commercial deep fryers and griddles. An ABC dry chemical extinguisher is the most versatile choice for general occupancies because it addresses the three most common fire classes in a single unit. Pure CO2 extinguishers suppress Class B and C fires without the residue damage of dry chemical, making them preferred for server rooms, electronics labs, and equipment where chemical contamination from dry chemical extinguisher discharge would cause additional damage beyond what the fire itself caused.

Extinguisher sizing follows NFPA 10 guidelines based on occupancy type, hazard classification, and travel distance to extinguisher. For light-hazard residential occupancies, a minimum 2.5-pound ABC extinguisher in the kitchen and a 5-pound unit in the garage provide baseline protection. For commercial and industrial occupancies, larger 10-pound or 20-pound units reduce the number of units needed to cover required travel distances, and wall-mounted units at marked, unobstructed locations ensure accessibility when a fire occurs. Maximum travel distance to an extinguisher should not exceed 75 feet for Class A hazards or 50 feet for Class B hazards per NFPA 10 specifications.

Annual inspection and periodic servicing are required for commercial extinguishers and strongly recommended for residential units. A qualified fire protection technician checks the pressure gauge, inspects the cylinder for damage, verifies the safety pin and tamper seal, confirms nozzle clarity, and checks the dry chemical for clumping. Hydrostatic testing at prescribed intervals — typically 5 or 12 years depending on extinguisher type — certifies the cylinder's pressure containment integrity. Home extinguishers should be checked monthly by the occupant for visible damage, proper pressure gauge position in the green zone, and clear nozzle access.

Mounting location, signage, and access are as important as extinguisher selection. An extinguisher stored in a cabinet under a sink is less useful in an emergency than one mounted on the wall at an accessible height with clear visual identification. NFPA 10 requires commercial extinguishers to be mounted with the handle no higher than 5 feet for units weighing 40 pounds or less, and conspicuously marked. For kitchens, mounting near the exit rather than near the cooking appliance itself allows the user to keep their back to the exit during use, providing an escape route if the fire grows beyond extinguisher control capability.
